‘Clearly He Didn’t Leak’: Reporter Who Received Trump’s Tax Return on Whether Trump Sent It
Reporter David Cay Johnston, who was the one who received two pages of President Donald Trump’s 2005 tax return in the mail and subsequently released them, appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball this evening to discuss Trump’s recent comments on the leak.
Speaking to host Chris Matthews, Johnston first gave a recounting of how and when he received the tax return. He also noted that it was postmarked from Westchester.
Asked if it was his call to reveal the document on Rachel Maddow’s program, he explained it was before commenting on his thoughts on who may have leaked it to him.
“I first thought maybe Donald had leaked it,” Johnston noted. “But his reaction in turning what could have been for him a terrific story about himself — he’s managed to squander by his reaction to this. So clearly he didn’t leak.”
He go on to talk about how Trump hasn’t complained about other leaks to the press that he suspect came from the president.
Earlier in the day, an excerpt of an interview with Tucker Carlson was released that showed Trump complaining about the leak, even though he acknowledged it wasn’t embarrassing.
