Maddow Talks Taxes with Fallon: The White House ‘Threatened’ Us … ‘Which is Complete Bull’

Coming off her highly controversial reveal of a fragment of Donald Trump’s 2005 tax returns, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow stopped by the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to talk about how it all went down. Maddow said that after journalist David Cay Johnston informed the show that he had been mailed the returns, both Maddow and Johnston spent all of Monday and Tuesday attempting to authenticate. “We really need[ed] to be sure this is the real thing,” said Maddow. “We had a whole other show planed.” In the end, it took a formal authentication from the White House before Maddow finally felt confident to go to air with the information. “We got a statement from them, they started calling us fake news,” said Maddow who also speculated that it might have been Trump who leaked the returns since he would have been the only person who could legally so. According to Maddow, the White House response was pure Trump. “They tried threaten us for publishing them, which is complete bull,” she said. “But I take the threat in the spirit with which it was intended.” Fallon pointedly failed to address any criticism that Maddow has faced for her much extended lead up to the announcement Tuesday night, which many said was a bust.
