Ex-CIA Director Hayden on GCHQ Surveillance Claim: ‘I’m Trying to Suppress a Laugh Here’
On CNN this morning, Michael Smerconish asked former CIA and NSA chief Michael Hayden about the claim from Fox’s Andrew Napolitano––cited by the White House this week––that British intel agency GCHQ surveilled Trump on behalf of the Obama administration. Hayden’s first words were “Michael, I’m sorry, I’m trying to suppress a laugh here.”
He said it’s “so far from reality” because “no one can ask a partner to do that which is illegal for himself or that which is illegal for the partner, and that’s never been done in the Five Eyes alliance.”
He said that this has resulted in the U.S. embarrassing one ally and angering another, and that’s some serious collateral damage.=
