‘I’m Here to Die for Allah’: Attacker Killed at Paris Airport After Trying to Grab Soldier’s Gun

An assailant outside of Paris was shot dead today after triggering a major security alert when he tried to wrest away a soldier’s military-grade assault weapon at an airport. Paris prosecutor Francois Molins told reporters that an investigation has been launched into Ziyed Ben Belgacem, the French national identified as the suspect behind the incident. Belgacem allegedly created a scene at Orly Airport when he dropped a can of gasoline and announced, “I’m here to die for Allah. In any case people are going to die.” Belgacem was said to have confronted a group of three soldiers, where he tried to grab a female soldier in order to use her as a human shield as he tried to pull her gun away. The soldier’s two colleagues shot and killed Belgacem during the encounter, and no one else was hurt in the skirmish. The incident caused a significant alarm at airport, which resulted in flights being diverted and droves of citizens being evacuated. Normal operations were allowed to resume midway through the afternoon. Molins said that Belgacem had a criminal record for violence and theft convictions, and French authorities have said that Belgacem was on their radar due to suspected Islamic extremism. Several members of Belgacom’s family have been taken into custody by authorities for questioning with regard to the incident. Watch above, via CBS. [Image via screengrab] — —
