‘They’ll Be Back in 2020’: Comey Says Russians Will Try to Interfere in Upcoming Elections
During today’s Congressional hearing on Russia’s meddling into last year’s presidential election, FBI Director James Comey was asked his thoughts on Russia possibly getting involved in upcoming elections, especially since there is now so much attention being paid to their activities.
“This massive amount in this loudness, now that it’s public knowledge, now that we have perhaps satisfied their thirst, that it has become such a huge deal, do you expect their interference to be amplified in future US elections?” Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) asked. “Do you see any evidence of that in European elections, or do you think that this public acknowledgment would tamper down the volatility?”
“Maybe I’ll just say as an initial matter, they’ll be back,” Comey responded. “They’ll be back in 2020. They may be back in 2018.”
He continued, “One of the lessons they may draw from is that they were successful because they introduced chaos and division and discord and sewed doubt about the nature of this amazing country of ours and our democratic process.”
Earlier in the House Intelligence hearing, the FBI chief explained that the agency’s analysts had assessed that Russia wanted Donald Trump to win the election. He also highlighted that there is an active investigation into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.
