Jake Tapper to Schiff on Russia: ‘Is There Definitely Going to Be Fire’ or Just a Lot of Smoke?

CNN’s Jake Tapper spoke with Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, after the big James Comey hearing today, and he asked about the “circumstantial evidence” Schiff spoke of yesterday on allegations of collusion between Russia and people in President Trump‘s orbit. Tapper said, “Circumstantial evidence, to me, doesn’t sound like you have evidence.” Schiff said that there’s value in circumstantial evidence, but Tapper posed this question:
Is there definitely going to be fire, or is it just going to be a lot of smoke? Isn’t it possible that there will be nothing at the end of this?

Schiff pushed back by saying that Republicans are giving too much weight to comments from individuals like former DNI chief James Clapper. (Clapper issued a statement through a spokesperson today saying he cannot “account for intelligence or evidence that may have gathered since the inauguration.”) Later on in the interview, Tapper observed from the hearing that Democrats seem to be “painting the possibility of a rather large conspiracy,” which would impossible to completely prove.
