‘I Wouldn’t Have Predicted It’: Valerie Jarrett Opens Up on Trump’s ‘Gut Wrenching’ Victory

Valerie Jarrett, former senior advisor to President Barack Obama, sat down with Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski to discuss the recent election victory of Donald Trump and what the future holds for Obama and Democrats. Early on in the interview, Jarrett acknowledged that Election Night was “rough,” describing the win by Trump as “gut wrenching.” “But that’s our democracy and then you have to just move on and figure out how you want to continue to do what you care most about,” she added. Brzezinksi wanted to know if there was a moment when Jarrett realized that the person who was going to be the next POTUS had risen to power via the birther movement. “You know, elections have consequences,” Jarrett noted. “It’s part of why President Obama worked so hard during the campaign. And so when people show you who they are you can’t be surprised they actually then continue to fulfill what they said they were going to do.” Later on in the conversation, the MSNBC host pressed the Obama confidant about whether there was any sense among the inner circle that Hillary Clinton may not win on Election Night. Jarrett explained that “it’s a big complicated democracy” before stating she didn’t really see it coming. “I actually didn’t see the election coming out the way it did,” she said. “I wouldn’t have predicted it.” Watch the interview above, via MSNBC.
