WATCH: 2003 Tucker Carlson Trashes Bill O’Reilly: ‘Deep Phoniness at the Center of His Shtick’

Tucker Carlson is being reminded that everything you say in the digital age will live forever. To that end, the Internet is now re-learning that the Fox News anchor didn’t really have a very high opinion of Bill O’Reilly. In the aftermath of O’Reilly’s dismissal from Fox News, video of Carlson has emerged from a 2003 interview on C-Span. During the talk, a much younger Carlson — still in his bowtie phase — offered a brutally honest assessment of the then-Factor host. “Bill O’Reilly is really talented. He’s a lot more talented than I am,” said Carlson. “But I think there is kind of a deep phoniness at the center of his shtick.” Carlson was on plugging his book, “Politicians, Partisans, and Parasites: My Adventures in Cable News.” His on-air comments, echoed additional criticism he wrote in those pages against O’Reilly. “O’Reilly’s success is built on the perception he really is who he claims to be. If he ever gets caught out of character, it’s over.” … How prophetic. Now, in context, Carlson — whose book is probably ripe for a second edition — was serving as a host of the show Crossfire at CNN at the time the comments were made. Still, the emergence of the footage is not likely to win him any friends among O’Reilly’s dedicated fan base, which he must now win over. [image via screengrab]
