Reaction to President
‘s commencement address to Coast Guard graduates on Wednesday was swift and harsh in the Twitterverse. The President was widely condemned on social media
for saying that “No politician in history — and I say this with great surety — has been treated worse or more unfairly.”
Wednesday afternoon, Jake Tapper
echoed those criticisms and added his own. Speaking with fellow CNN host Brooke Baldwin
, Tapper noted the following, in response to Trump’s claim:
“Four U.S. Presidents have been actually literally assassinated and killed. So I think that there people who have been treated worse than President Trump has been.”
Tapper then said that not only have other leaders been treated more unfairly than Trump, but Trump himself
has treated others more unfairly — referring to Trump’s years-long contention that former President Barack Obama
was an illegitimate President.
“When it comes to President who’s been treated unfairly, I mean, that President led the charge claiming that the first African-American President was born in Africa. Which is not only a charge that is false, but… a little bit racist.”
Overall, The Lead
host was just perplexed by the tone of Trump’s address to the Coast Guard graduates.
“I don’t really understand the propensity for self-pity at a time like this,” Tapper said.
