‘No! No! Next Question’: Trump Emphatically Denies Telling Comey to Back Off Flynn

“In the light of a very busy news week, a lot of people would like to get to the bottom of a couple of things — give you a chance to go on record here.” With those words from Peter Baker of The New York Times, the East Room of the White House grew quiet, but for the shutter clicks of the cameras. President Donald Trump was about to get the question — the one he’d avoided for nearly 48 hours but could no longer. The political world stopped to watch. “Did you at any time urge former FBI director James Comey in any way shape or form to close or to back down the investigation into Michael Flynn?” The President did not wait to respond, even as Baker started to ask a follow-up. “No! No!” Trump said tersely. “Next question.” Baker followed-up by asking President feels he;s done something that might be “worthy of criminal charges or impeachment.” “I think it is totally ridiculous,” Trump said. “Everybody thinks so.” Trump then spoke at length about his decision to fire Comey and indicated he thought it would be a more popular decision among Democrats.
