CNN’s Amanda Carpenter: Trump Trashing Comey to Russians Sounds an ‘Awful Lot Like’ Collusion

This afternoon, much like every other day this week, the White House was rocked with another bombshell. In a pair of blockbuster stories that hit minutes apart, it was reported that President Trump called recently fired FBI Director James Comey a “nut job” during his Oval Office meeting with Russian officials and a White House official is a person of interest in the Russia probe. It was also noted during the Russian meeting that Trump indicated the Russia investigation was the reason he fired Comey. During a CNN panel discussion, CNN political commentator Amanda Carpenter lit into the president and conservatives for constantly claiming there is no evidence of collusion between Trump and Russia now that we have these new reports. “And I know the White House is going to come out and say their stock line to every question about this investigation is that there’s no evidence of collusion,” told host Jake Tapper. “If you listen to talk radio, that’s all they say — there’s no evidence of collusion.” Carpenter then essentially said that if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck — it’s a duck. “I don’t know what the legal standard for collusion is,” the ex-Ted Cruz staffer noted. “But Donald Trump having a secret meeting in the Oval Office to trash the leader of the FBI to the Russians sounds an awful lot like it!” She added that if Trump lied about the firing of the FBI director, that would taint his presidency, even if Trump was able to get away with lying during his campaign. Shortly after Comey was terminated, the White House pushed the narrative that he was fired based on the recommendation of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. However, in an interview with NBC News’ Lester Holt, Trump contradicted that, saying he had decided regardless of what the Justice Department said. Also this week, Rosenstein told the House and Senate that he knew Comey was going to be canned before he wrote his memo. Watch above, via CNN.
