SNL‘s Weekend Update Briefly Addresses Matt Lauer Scandal

On Saturday Night Live, Weekend Update took a brief moment to mention the controversy surrounding their former network colleague Matt Lauer. In the middle of the segment, Colin Jost invoked the fired Today Show host among other high-profile sexual harassers who were exposed during the past week. “Oh yeah, I almost forgot about this week’s batch of predators,” Jost began as he pointed to an onscreen lineup of Lauer, Russell Simmons, and Garrison Keillor. “It’s just a full segment of the news now. We’ve just got to announce the names every week like Powerball numbers.” He then seemed to move on to other news… “On Wednesday, the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree was lit… and so was Ann Curry,” Jost quipped. Michael Che then mentioned one of the allegations made against Lauer that he gave a female colleague a sex toy. “According to new allegations against Matt the former Today Show host gave a female colleague a sex toy as a gift, which is a bad thing?” Che asked. “Wow, so I guess that means I should return the Secret Santa gift I got for Colin….” An image of that “Secret Santa gift” appeared on screen, which sparked a stare-down from Jost. “It’s double-sided,” Che joked from off-screen. Earlier in the show, there was a wink given to the Lauer controversy by Billy Bush (played by Alex Moffat) in the Trump-centric cold open. After Alec Baldwin‘s President Trump assured Bush that he’d find work again after the Access Hollywood tape, Bush said he’s “looking pretty good in the NBC News division right about now.” Watch the clip above, via NBC.
