Conservative NYT Columnist Bret Stephens: Roy Moore ‘Makes Anthony Weiner Look Good’

In recent days, Republicans in Washington have reversed course on embattled Alabama GOP Senate nominee Roy Moore and signaled that they’d be fine with the accused child molester winning the election this month. With President Donald Trump tweeting out an official endorsement of Moore this week, the RNC has decided to reinvest in the race and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has softened his stance towards Moore. As other Republican senators have either remained silent on Moore or presented justifications for Trump’s endorsement, conservative New York Times columnist Bret Stephens tore into the GOP for being “morally bankrupt.” “Until last year, I voted Republican in every single election,” Stephens said on MSNBC Tuesday morning. “I think I speak not only for myself but for many other people that I could never vote, ever again, for a party that is making an open endorsement of a man against whom there credible accusations of pedophilia.” Stephens added that this would be a moment that people look back as a “moment of shame” before calling out GOP lawmakers as “moral cowards” who are seemingly okay with a predator in their midst as long as it results in policy changes they want. This led the NYT writer to make a devastating comparison. “Judge Moore is a guy who makes Anthony Weiner look good,” he stated. “Because Anthony Weiner at least was predating women at a distance. He was doing it in person.” Princeton professor Eddie Glaude added that the GOP made a “Faustian bargain” in the “name of power,” adding that “simple-mindedness has become our national prison.” He commended Stephens for making a strong statement against the GOP before taking aim at Trump for his endorsement. “The guy is a pedophile,” Glaude said of Moore. “What does it mean that the most powerful man in the world has just given a full-throated defense of a pedophile? An endorsement? A pedophile?” Watch the clip above, via MSNBC. [image via screengrab] — Follow Justin Baragona on Twitter: @justinbaragona
