Watch: Beyonce Presents Colin Kaepernick With Sports Illustrated’s Muhammad Ali Legacy Award

Colin Kaepernick was presented with Sports Illustrated’s Muhammad Ali Legacy Award on Tuesday night, which celebrates sports stars that have impacted the world. Beyonce, who came out as a surprise presenter, thanked the former football player for his “personal sacrifice,” before announcing the award: “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m so proud and humbled, to present the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award to Colin Kaepernick,” she said. “I accept this award knowing that the legacy of Muhammad Ali is that of a champion of the people and one who was affectionately known as the people’s champ,” Kaepernick said in his speech. “I accept this award not for myself but on behalf of the people because it were not for my love for the people, I would not have protested. And if it was not for the support from the people, I would not be on this stage today.” Kaepernick began kneeling during national anthem last season to protest racism and police brutality. The protest sparked outrage and support in seemingly equal parts — with a number of his fellow players following suit, drawing the ire of president and culture-war-fetishist Donald Trump. The quarterback parted ways with the San Francisco 49ers this year, and was not signed to another team. He has spent the rest of the year focusing on social justice issues. “With or without the NFL’s platform, I will continue to work for the people because my platform is the people,” Kaepernick concluded.
