President Trump kicked off his holiday weekend at Mar-a-Lago Friday night at a dinner where he told friends, “You all just got a lot richer,” referencing the sweeping tax overhaul he signed into law hours earlier. Mr. Trump directed those comments to friends dining nearby at the exclusive club — including to two friends at a table near the president’s who described the remark to CBS News — as he began his final days of his first in office in what has become known as the “Winter White House.”As CBS News noted, initiation fees at Mar-a-Lago cost $200,000 and annual dues are as high as $14,000. So doubtful that those in attendance Friday night represented the middle-class. The president and Congressional Republicans have focused a lot of their efforts on pitching the tax reform legislation as a major benefit to the middle class. And while analysis shows that the vast majority of Americans will pay less in taxes next year, it also reveals that corporations and the ultra-wealthy will receive the largest gains in this bill. And the bill contains loopholes that will specifically benefit the president and some lawmakers, such as Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), who was a key vote in getting the legislation passed. Remember how the president spent a whole bunch of time selling the recently passed tax overhaul by claiming that it wouldn’t personally benefit him and that his rich friends weren’t that happy about it? Yeah, umm, about that. According to CBS News, the president started his Christmas weekend off Friday night by letting his dinner guests know that they would be benefitting from the tax cuts that he just signed into law.
