One of President Donald Trump’s
biggest critics from within the Republican Party stated that today’s GOP is now all about expressing loyalty to the president.
Speaking to ABC News’ Mary Bruce
, Rep. Charlie Dent
(R-PA) said that before Trump became president, the “litmus test” for Republicans revolved around ideological purity and conformity. In Dent’s opinion, however, that “litmus test has changed.”
“The issue is loyalty to the man — to the president,” the Pennsylvania lawmaker, who is retiring at the end of his term, explained. “For some, loyalty isn’t enough. You have to be angry and aggrieved.”
He concluded, “It’s not about ideology anymore. It’s about loyalty to the president.”
This isn’t a new statement from the retiring congressman.
in September, Dent told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews the same thing
, indicating that there was a fight within the party between party purists and pragmatists and that loyalty to Trump was being used as a litmus test.
