Tucker Carlson Battles BuzzFeed’s Ben Smith Over Dossier: You Published ‘Because It Was Trump’

Tucker Carlson faced off with BuzzFeed editor-in-chief Ben Smith tonight and charged that “partisanship played a role” in BuzzFeed’s decision to run the infamous dossier. It’s been a year since BuzzFeed published it. Last night, Smith defended its publication and Trump lawyer Michael Cohen filed a defamation lawsuit over it. Smith defended the decision again to Carlson tonight, noting the news significance of the dossier in the past year. Carlson countered that there’s always information that gets passed around that are ultimately passed on because of “unverifiable” and “defamatory” information within. “You did run this,” he added, “because it was Trump.” Smith said this in response:
“Your inbox and mine, as you say, are full of all sorts of would-be dossiers, of tips… They are not full of documents that are being briefed to the President of the United States, to the President-elect of the United States, being fought in an intense tug of war by intelligence officials…. Imagine covering Simpson’s testimony to the intelligence committee… in a situation in which you had no idea what they were fighting about.”

Carlson pushed back again, saying he can’t make a “retroactive argument,” and he added, “I’m not even attacking you for running it. I would just like to you acknowledge that partisanship played a role.” Smith told Carlson that’s not true and if they were in a similar situation with Hillary Clinton in the Oval Office, they would have done the same thing. He cited BuzzFeed’s coverage of secret Clinton speeches during the campaign, to which Carlson responded, “This is different-level salacious… They weren’t claiming that she was into some weird sex practice.” Watch above, via Fox News.
