White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said President Donald Trump phoned his lawyer, Michael Cohen, last week because the two “have a long relationship.” She made the remarks to ABC’s George Stephanopoulos Sunday morning from Washington, where she declined to speak about the nature of the call but said the president would keep his relationship with Cohen. “He’s had a long relationship with Michael Cohen,” Sanders said. “He’s gonna continue to have that relationship. In terms of specifics of their private conversation, I can’t get into that.” While Sanders said the president believes he’s done nothing wrong, she underscored that he could only speak for himself. “The president is very confident in that fact that he has done nothing wrong, and he can’t speak on behalf of anyone else, but he’s very confident in what he has and hasn’t done, and he’s going to continue focusing fighting for the American people,” she told Stephanopoulos. “Our concern is on doing what the president was elected to do: growing the economy, creating jobs, defeating ISIS, building and protecting our borders. This is the focus of this administration. Certainly, we’re going to respond to some of the charges brought against us and brought directly against the president. As we’ve said before, he’s a fighter and he’s gonna hit back when he’s hit, but that’s the focus. It’s certainly the policy priorities that this administration is gonna spend our time on.” Asked about Cohen’s credibility following his strong denial of a McClatchy report claiming he took a secret trip to Prague, Sanders said she couldn’t comment. “Again, I can’t speak on behalf of Michael Cohen and what he may or may not have done. That’s something that will be determined. I know he has contested that that’s not accurate, but I haven’t had a conversation with the president about that specific instance.” The report alleges that Cohen made the trip in the months leading up to the 2016 presidential election. If true, it could back up claims in the Steele dossier that the president colluded with Russia to secure his election win. Watch the clip above, via ABC.
