Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo on Sunday said that “there will be” a next school shooting if Americans do not “start using the ballot box” to elect officials who support gun control measures. Acevedo made the comment on CBS’ Face the Nation just two days after a school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas claimed the lives of 10 individuals. “We need to start using the ballot box and ballot initiatives to take the matters out of the hands of people that are doing nothing that are elected into the hands of the people to see that the will of the people this country is actually carried out,” Acevedo told CBS’ Margaret Brennan. Acevedo further advocated for holding gun owners criminally liable if they do not store their guns safely and those guns are used to kill people as a result. The Houston police chief added that if elected officials continue to do nothing in terms of gun legislation, then “there will be a next time.” The Santa Fe shooting happened just three months after 17 students were gunned down at a a high school in Parkland, Florida. The Parkland shooting reignited the national gun control debate, particularly with the organization of the March for our Lives rally in Washington, D.C.
