Just one day after a report from CBS made it rounds suggesting Sarah Sanders was about to call it quits, the current White House press secretary arrived — albeit late — for the daily press briefing. In her opening remarks, Sanders squeezed out a smile when wished President Donald Trump a happy birthday and in yet another questionable remark from the podium quipped he didn’t look “a day over 35.” Yet her smile faded away when talk turned to the Trump administration’s plan that separates children from their families at the border and Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ biblical justification for it. Speaking to church leaders on Thursday, Sessions said this: “Illegal entry into the United States is a crime — as it should be. Persons who violate the law of our nation are subject to prosecution. I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained them for the purpose of order,” Sessions said at a gathering in Fort Wayne, Ind., where he spoke only on the administration’s immigration priorities.” Referencing those remarks, Acosta probed Sanders about how Sessions could possibly use the Bible to justify what was happening to children and families at America’s borders right now. “On these children that are being separated from their families at the border. The attorney general said somehow there’s a justification for this in the Bible. Where does it say in the Bible that it’s moral to take children away from their mothers?” CNN’s Jim Acosta asked. “I’m not aware of the attorney general’s comment or what he would be referencing. I can say that it is very biblical to enforce the law. That is repeated many times throughout the Bible,” Sanders replied, not providing a single reference to back up her claims. “If you’ll let me finish. I’m not going to comment on the attorney’s specific comments that I haven’t seen –” “He said in the Bible..” Acosta pressed on, prompting a scolding from the Press Secretary. “It’s hard for you to understand short sentences. Please don’t take my words out of context. But the separation of illegal alien families is the same product that the Democrats refuse to close. These laws are the same that have been on the books over a decade. The president is simply enforcing them,” she said, trying to justify the policy. “Is it moral policy to take children away from their parents?…Why is the government doing this?” Acosta demanded. “Because it’s the law. That’s what the law states,” Sanders replied, prompting Acosta to note it does not have to be law. Watch above, via Fox News [image via screengrab]
