A new report states that Michael Cohen took a secret recording of a conversation where Donald Trump talking about a payoff for a Playboy model he had an alleged affair with before the 2016 election. New York Times states that the FBI obtained the recording when they raided Cohen’s office earlier this year as part of their investigation into Cohen’s questionable business dealings and possible bank fraud with the hush money payments to Stormy Daniels. Apparently, Trump spoke to his former personal attorney about also giving money to Playboy model Karen McDougal. From the report:
Rudolph W. Giuliani, Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer, confirmed in a telephone conversation on Friday that Mr. Trump had discussed the payments with Mr. Cohen on the tape but said the payment was ultimately never made. He said the recording was less than two minutes and demonstrated that the president had done nothing wrong. “Nothing in conversation suggests that he had any knowledge of it in advance,” Mr. Giuliani said, adding that Mr. Trump had directed Mr. Cohen that if he were to make a payment related to the woman, write a check, rather than sending cash, so it could be properly documented

McDougal says she had a fling with Trump shortly after birth of his youngest son, Barron. The National Enquirer paid her a large sum of money for exclusive rights to her story, but chose not to release it during the election. Since Trump is friendly with the heads of the Enquirer and occasionally uses it to go after his political foes, the McDougal development has prompted speculation that the tabloid used the practice of “catch and kill” to suppress her story before it could damage Trump’s campaign. The news about Cohen’s secret tape comes as he continues to break away from his old boss, dropping hints that he might turn and cooperate with Robert Mueller‘s ongoing special counsel probe.
