Former White House communications aide Cliff Sims just published a tell-all about his time in the White House called Team of Vipers: My 500 Extraordinary Days in the Trump White House. And now, it seems,  he is suing President Donald Trump for violating his First Amendment rights by going after him after he published the book. The New York Times reported on Monday that Sims is “suing the president in his official capacity, alleging that he used his campaign organization as a ‘cutout’ to improperly seek retribution against former employees and keep them from invoking their First Amendment rights.” Sims’ lawsuit comes after the Trump campaign filed an arbitration claim against the White House aide turned author. The campaign is claiming that Sims violated a non-disclosure agreement, but Sims is reportedly not entirely sure he signed an NDA at all. According to Sims’ lawsuit, Trump “is seeking to impose liability against Mr. Sims through application of NDAs that apply to information Mr. Sims learned solely during his federal service.” The suit also notes that Trump does not apply the standard equitably, choosing to go after Sims and Omarosa Manigault-Newman but not,  for example, Corey Lewandowski, whose book was favorable towards Trump. The White House has not commented on pending litigation. Trump has made it clear he is not a fan of Sims’ work, tweeting out shortly after the book’s publication: Sims is the first former White House staffer to file such a federal suit. His publisher, St. Martin’s Press, has issued a statement supporting the litigation writing, “When presidents or their political campaigns seek to silence a voice, it is especially important that we maintain our steadfast commitment to free speech.” [image via screengrab]
