On Monday, Maryland’s Republican governor Larry Hogan sat down with CNN’s Erin Burnett. Hogan’s name has been bandied about as a possible President Donald Trump primary challenger in 2020. He has also openly challenged Trump,  most recently scolding the president in an op-ed published by CNN on Monday. Burnett reminded Hogan during their discussion that he had said previously that one of the reasons he is being championed by some in his party for a 2020 run is that he is “not afraid” to speak out against Trump and, in fact, has done so again and again. She then contrasted it with a supercut of leading Republicans heaping lavish praise on POTUS. “Why are so many thoughtful leaders in your party silent when it comes to taking on this president on issue after issue?” Burnett asked. Hogan suggested that maybe they were afraid to speak out. “Look, I think some the leaders in the party actually agree with the president with a number of these issues,” he replied. He continued on: “Some folks, I think maybe — you know that I hear from that talk about they’re not in agreement,  they maybe are afraid to speak out.” He then stressed while he is not afraid, he’s not “one of these folks” who try to get out there and “bash the president” day after day.
