While President Donald Trump was holding his rally in El Paso, former Rep. Robert O’Rourke held a counter-rally to speak out against the president and his calls to expand walls in certain places along the border. According to O’Rourke, walls do not make people safer and they actually kill because it forces people who are illegally crossing to go to more remote, dangerous places along the border. “We know that walls do not save lives. Walls end lives,” he said. “In the last ten years, more 4,000 children, women, and men have died trying to come to this country, to work jobs no one will take, to be with a family member, to flee horrific brutality and violence and death in their home countries.” “And as we build these walls, 600 miles of the 2,000-mile border walled up and counting, we push them to ever more treacherous and remote stenches the U.S.-Mexico border thereby ensuring greater suffering and death,” he added. During his rally, Trump told the crowd the wall, a big promise from his campaign, will be built. Negotiations on Capitol Hill between Democrats and Republicans have appeared to reach a deal, with 1 billion for a wall in exchange for fewer beds in holding facilities. “As I was walking up to the stage, they said that progress is being made with this committee. Just so you know, we’re building the wall anyway,” Trump told the crowd.
