How A Web Conspiracy Troll Sparked An International Incident

President Donald Trump’s self-inflicted Twitter wounds drew dangerous new blood this past week as he tripled down on his quartet of tweets March 4th, falsely accusing Barack Obama of “wiretapping” Trump Tower. With or without quotations marks, the audacity of that charge, which was utterly rejected Sunday by the chairman and ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, represented a White House pronouncement on a new level of untruth that threatened to de-couple America’s crucial six decade intelligence partnership with the British, the Five Eyes Alliance.
That’s because, as he dug-in his heels through WH Press Secretary Shawn Spicer Mr. Trump later insisted in front of German Chancellor Angela Merkel that GCHQ, the U.K. equivalent of the NSA, had been asked by the former President to spy on his successor.
His source was Andrew Napolitano an ex-New Jersey Superior Court Judge and FOX NEWS commentator who boldly claimed (based Continue reading "How A Web Conspiracy Troll Sparked An International Incident"

From Russia With A Plan: After His Press Conference, Why Donald Trump Called The Media, ‘The Enemy Of The American People.’

During his rambling, seventy-seven minute press conference Thursday the 45th President of the United States ricocheted between boasting (once again) about his November victory, by blatantly misstating his electoral vote ranking, to describing his month-old chaos presidency a “finely tuned machine,” to assuring reporters in the East Room that he’d been “briefed” and if the U.S. & Russia ever threw down in a nuclear exchange, the “holocaust would be like no other.” That was one truth even his son Barron surely knows without having to consult a PDB. The holocaust line and his musing that “lots of things are done with uranium including …bad things,” were among many “Dr. Strangelove” moments in that jaw-dropping shoot-from-the-hip performance. On CNN Jake Tapper called it “wild” and “unhinged.” Presidential historian Douglas Brinkley described it as “bizarre theater.” Even Shepard Smith on Trump-friendly Fox News characterized his repeated misstatements of Continue reading "From Russia With A Plan: After His Press Conference, Why Donald Trump Called The Media, ‘The Enemy Of The American People.’"

DOJ Report On MISSBURN Case Leaves Out A Crucial Detail: The Name Of The Vicious Mafia Killer Who Broke The Case For J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI

The New York Times reported Tuesday that a U.S. Justice Dept. inquiry into the notorious 1964 murders of civil rights workers, Goodman, Schwerner & Chaney, has ended with a 48 page report sent to Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood. Based on that report's findings Hood has announced that the 52 year-old case is now closed.

The three young voter registration volunteers were kidnapped and tortured by members of the Ku Klux Klan in Neshoba County during what civil rights leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King, called "Freedom Summer."

After they'd gone missing and their fire charred station wagon was later found without their bodies, panic set in within the Justice Department of President Lyndon B. Johnson.

The incident inspired the film "Mississippi Burning," which wrongly concluded that the case was solved after an African American FBI agent was sent to Mississippi and interrogated a KKK sympathizer.

Although the Continue reading "DOJ Report On MISSBURN Case Leaves Out A Crucial Detail: The Name Of The Vicious Mafia Killer Who Broke The Case For J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI"

Intro Debacle at the GOP Debate. What Has Become of My Old Alma Mater ABC News?

In December of 2002, when the legendary Roone Arledge passed away, I wrote a Counterpunch piece for the L.A. Times praising the man who not only set the gold standard for Olympics coverage, but gave us Monday Night Football and Wide World of Sports. He was also the broadcasting giant who revitalized ABC News. The piece was titled "Arledge no god, but in him we trust."

During the 1980's I worked for Roone as a producer and correspondent on such iconic broadcasts as 20/20, Nightline and World News Tonight and I can say without equivocation, that if he was alive to watch the open to Saturday night's ABC News coverage of the GOP debate, he would have been outraged.

Moderated by Martha Raddatz, an ex-NPR reporter and the Alphabet network's pretty-boy anchor David Muir, whose principal qualification for the job seems to have been his jawline, the Continue reading "Intro Debacle at the GOP Debate. What Has Become of My Old Alma Mater ABC News?"
