Remember when Disney released photos of their live-action ‘Aladdin’ remake with actor Will Smith as a Genie, and fans hated that he wasn’t blue? And remember how Smith reassured fans that he was, in fact, going to be blue in the final movie? Well, they hadn’t seen Smith as a blue Genie until a Sunday night Grammys commercial… and the internet is going bonkers. “You really don’t know who I am? Genie, wishes, lamp… none of that ringing a bell?” says a portly, blue Smith, who looks like a nightmarish Smurf. Twitter didn’t hesitate to drag Smith’s character all the way to Agrabah, reactions spanning from laughs and mockery to sheer horror.

Based upon the initial reaction, if Disney fans could ask the Genie from Aladdin for one wish, it would be this: Don’t go through with a live-action remake. Entertainment Weekly, on Wednesday, released a first look at the film — slated for release on May 24, 2019. And fans do not seem to be ready to enter this Whole New World. Here’s a sampling of the reaction:

aladdin agrabah refugees bullshit pollRemember when pollsters-who-thought-they-were-funny asked Republicans whether or not they were okay about bombing the fictional location of Disney’s Aladdin, Agrabah? Yeah, there’s another poll just like it, except this time the central question concerned whether or not those asked would be okay with Agrabah refugees resettling in the United States. Wilson Perkins Allen (WPA) Opinion Research released the results of the new poll on Wednesday, which determined that 44 percent of Democrats approved of Agrabah refugees coming to America. 66 percent of young Democrats (age 18 to 34) were totes okay with the resettling program, too. Per WPA’s news release:
On December 20, 2015, WPA Research fielded a national survey of 1,132 registered voters that found 44% of Democrats would support taking refugees from that same Agrabah. PPP may have proven that some Republicans will support bombing a fictional country, but fully 44% of Democrats will allow refugees from anywhere Continue reading "Latest Bullsh*t Poll: Democrats OK With Accepting Refugees from Aladdin’s Agrabah"

agrabahThe most recent poll from the Democratic polling firm Public Policy Polling finds that 30% of Republicans nationally would support bombing the fictional kingdom of Agrabah. PPP– which is known for asking trolltastic questions— found that an additional 13% do NOT support bombing the setting of Disney’s Aladdin. 57% of Republicans have no opinion on the matter. In fairness to Republican voters, PPP later said on Twitter that Democrats also voiced opinions on bombing the fictional country. 36% say they would oppose a bombing campaign, while 19% support it. The result of the poll demonstrates a problem endemic in opinion polling and not restricted to one party. Research has shown that 20-40% of the population will consistently voice firm opinions on issues and legislation that do not exist. [Image via screengrab]

One of Robin Williams‘s best and most memorable roles was as the Genie in Aladdin. And since the movie has been adapted into a Broadway musical, the stars of the show ended last night with a rousing tribute to Robin Williams by getting single audience member to join in a special “Friend Like Me” singalong. James Iglehart, the actor playing the role of the Genie, spoke briefly about how amazing Williams was as a performer. He and the rest of the cast sent their best wishes to Williams’ family, and proceeded to sing, without orchestral accompaniment, the iconic Disney song. Tributes have been pouring in for days to remember Williams, including by the men in late night television who idolized Williams’ comic talent. And the Emmy Awards are planning a “meaningful” tribute to Williams when the ceremony airs. You can watch the Broadway singalong below, via Entertainment Weekly: [h/t PopWatch]
