Ben Rhodes: The Government Can’t Control People’s Facebook Feeds and That Worries Me

Appearing on on MSNBC with Andrea Mitchell to discuss his book on Wednesday, former top Obama aide Ben Rhodes lamented the problem of fake news and its impact on elections. And worried about the lack of government control. Rhodes was referring back to the election, bring up hacking and leaking of emails, but said that pushing back on hacks and leaks doesn’t address “fake news” or “the fact that people’s social media feeds were being polluted by this Russian content favoring Donald Trump. “The government didn’t have a lot of capacity to deal with this. I mean we can’t edit people’s Facebook feeds and say ‘that’s fake news, and that’s not'” he said. “And what worries me today, Andrea, is that we still don’t have a lot of capacity, and frankly our government’s probably not doing anything to prevent this.” This surely brings to mind the worst conservative fears Continue reading "Ben Rhodes: The Government Can’t Control People’s Facebook Feeds and That Worries Me"

Andrea Mitchell Asks Joy Reid Awkward Question on What It Takes to Get Fired From TV Show

MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell posed an awkward question to fellow host Joy Ann Reid in the wake of Roseanne Barr‘s racist tweets: “What do you have to do on social media to get fired from a top rated show on an American broadcast network?” Barr, who tweeted a racist remark about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett, apologized for the post after a backlash, and said she was leaving Twitter. ABC cancelled her hit sitcom Roseanne soon after. Mitchell asked Reid about the backlash to Barr’s tweet on MSNBC Tuesday, and whether it would be enough to get her fired from her show. The question was an awkward one for Reid: the MSNBC host came under fire last month for concocting an absurdly implausible hacking claim after Mediaite reported on homophobic posts from her own blog. Reid was not fired for her bizarre claims that someone hacked her old Continue reading "Andrea Mitchell Asks Joy Reid Awkward Question on What It Takes to Get Fired From TV Show"

Ex-CIA Chief Brennan Slams Trump for ‘Spy’ Claims: He’s a ‘Master of Mischaracterization and Dishonesty’

As President Donald Trump continues to tweet about an FBI informant in his campaign and calling it “SpyGate,” MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell asked former CIA Director John Brennan what the difference is between an informant and a spy. “First of all I think this is very typical of Mr. Trump to mischaracterize,” Brennan said. “He’s a master of mischaracterization and dishonesty.” “A spy is somebody who is recruited,” Brennan continued. “Usually it’s a foreign national who is going to work on behalf of U.S. intelligence agencies to provide information about issues related to our national security.” “A confidential human source is what the FBI uses in order to have some insight into what may be going on that could involve criminal activity,” he explained further. “To label someone as a spy when they are a confidential human source is doing a disservice to these individuals but also to Continue reading "Ex-CIA Chief Brennan Slams Trump for ‘Spy’ Claims: He’s a ‘Master of Mischaracterization and Dishonesty’"

CNN, NYT, ABC News, C-SPAN Take Trump Out of Context to Falsely Suggest He Called Immigrants ‘Animals’

President Donald Trump held a meeting on illegal immigration at the White House on Wednesday and one particular moment went viral… but for all the wrong reasons. Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims expressed her frustrations with the federal government to the president regarding the handling of criminal illegal immigrants and cited MS-13 gang members as an example. Responding directly to that, Trump said the following:
“You wouldn’t believe how bad these people are. These aren’t people, these are animals, and we’re taking them out of the country at a level and at a rate that’s never happened before.”
However, dozens of media outlets have only shared the response to Sheriff Mims, not including her question and comments that were directly about MS-13 and in the process purposefully mischaracterizing the president’s remarks to accuse him of referring to immigrants as “animals.” CNN, ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, and Continue reading "CNN, NYT, ABC News, C-SPAN Take Trump Out of Context to Falsely Suggest He Called Immigrants ‘Animals’"

Andrea Mitchell: Kim Jong Un Has ‘Gained the Propaganda Advantage’

Andrea Mitchell spoke with Chuck Todd about the latest developments from North Korea––namely, that they’ve cancelled talks with South Korea and reportedly threatened to cancel the upcoming U.S. summit. Todd asked if Kim Jong Un is “poking the fence.” “This was so utterly predictable,” Mitchell responded. “Once the President was so eager to accept the terms before the terms are even spelled out…” They both noted how the North Korea talks sounded like a done deal, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo talking just two days ago about it. Mitchell took note of President Trump‘s praise of Kim Jong Un the night the three prisoners came to the U.S., wondering why the man who wrote The Art of the Deal was “so eager.” She also pointed out how much Trump and his team have already touted the success here, with the President even publicly Continue reading "Andrea Mitchell: Kim Jong Un Has ‘Gained the Propaganda Advantage’"

VP Pence on Mueller Investigation: ‘It’s Time to Wrap It Up’

Vice President Mike Pence said on Thursday that it’s time for special counsel Robert Mueller to end his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. In an interview with NBC’s Andrea Mitchell, after three American detainees returned from North Korea, Pence was asked about Mueller — who is leading the probe into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia. Mitchell asked if Pence thought Mueller could be trusted, and whether he thought the special counsel was a “bad guy.” Pence declined to answer, instead stating that the administration has been cooperative with the probe. “Do you think this investigation is a hoax?” Mitchell pressed.

“What I think is that it’s been about a year since this investigation began,” Pence replied. “Our administration has provided over a million documents, we’ve fully cooperated in it.

“In the interest of the country, I think it’s time to wrap it up,” Continue reading "VP Pence on Mueller Investigation: ‘It’s Time to Wrap It Up’"

Podesta: Emails Released to Give ‘Fox News Something to Talk About’ Instead of Access Hollywood Tape

John Podesta, the former chairman of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, opened up on Wednesday about his hacked emails that were leaked just hours after the controversial Access Hollywood tape featuring President Donald Trump. Podesta said he believes the emails were dumped by Wikileaks in an effort to distract the American public from the tape, in which Trump is heard boasting about grabbing women by their genitalia without permission. He also questioned whether there may have been a level of “coordination” between the Trump campaign and Wikileaks in releasing the hacked emails just after the shocking recording broke international news. “I think it was done to try to divert attention,” Podesta told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell. “At least to give the anchors on Fox News something to talk about other than the Access Hollywood tape.”
