In text messages that were obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, Illinois State’s Attorney Kim Foxx called Jussie Smollett a “washed up celeb who lied to cops” two weeks before her office dropped all charges against the actor. In the texts, first reported by by CBS Chicago’s Charlie De Mar, Foxx spoke to Joe Magats, the prosecutor running the Smollett case after she recused herself. Here’s a screenshot: “So…I’m recused , but when people accuse us of overcharging cases…16 counts on a class 4 becomes exhibit A,” Foxx texted. “Yes. I can see where that can be seen as excessive,” Magats replied. “Pedophile with 4 victims 10 counts.  Washed up celeb who lied to cops, 16. On a case eligible for deferred prosecution I think it’s indicative of something we should be looking at generally. Just because we can charge something doesn’t mean we should,” Foxx Continue reading "Texts From State’s Attorney Kim Foxx Show She Called Smollett a ‘Washed Up Celeb Who Lied to Cops’"

Ecuador only agreed to revoke Julian Assange‘s asylum after the United States agreed not to seek the death penalty, according to an ABC report. Citing multiple sources, ABC reports that Assange had become a nuisance to his hosts costing over $30,000 a month to keep him there. He was also taking up too much room in the small diplomatic space. So, they wanted him out. “They were over him, he was a big nuisance,” one senior U.S. official was quoted as saying by ABC News. “They were saying ‘This is too much. How do we get him out?’” However, they wanted to make sure that he wouldn’t be extradited to a country where he may face the death penalty first. Back in March 2018, Ecuador made its first contact with UK officials to make sure Assange’s would not face execution. Six months ago, they reached out for Continue reading "U.S. Reportedly Gave Ecuador ’Verbal Pledge’ to Not Seek Death Penalty for Assange"

New York Times reporter Michael Schwirtz set out to investigate a series of assassinations in Ukraine with low expectations. Reporting on a homicide as a member of the foreign press is daunting enough to begin with. His assignment was formidable beacuse many of the murders were linked to Russia — a government hostile to the media at best and notorious for murdering foreign journalists at worst. But when Schwirtz approached alleged Russian assassin Oleg Smorodinov to question him about a murder, the accused provided some unexpected bits of testimony: a confession. And on top of that, Smorodinov disclosed the specific role the Kremlin played in ordering and directing his crime. Schwirtz published his findings in a New York Times feature last week. Bob spoke with Schwirtz about spies, state-facilitated assassination and the experience of following a true story that reads like a Russian mystery novel.

Kim Foxx, the top prosecutor for Cook County, suggested racism has been behind the large amount of criticism she and her office has received after they dropped all sixteen charges against actor Jussie Smollett. Her office maintained they still believe Smollett staged the hate crime against himself, but he is not a priority compared to other violent crimes. “I cannot run an office, I cannot run an office that is driven by anger and public sentiment,” Foxx said during a press conference. “I must run an office that looks at the facts, the evidence, and the law on every case. That is my responsibility when I look back at how we have wrongful convictions in the circumstances around them and some that we’re hiding of media attention and others that were not, I cannot put ourselves in the position of being driven by public. We must be driven by Continue reading "Chicago Prosecutor Kim Foxx Suggests Racism Behind Criticism for Dropping Charges Against Smollett"

In a newly released statement, Jussie Smollett‘s lawyers said the actor is owed an apology from Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson after Cook County prosecutors dropped the charges against him. “It is the Mayor and the Police Chief who owe Jussie — owe him an apology — for dragging an innocent man’s character through the mud. Jussie has paid enough,” Smollett’s lawyers said, according to CBS Chicago reporter Charlie De Mar. The statement is in response to Chicago Mayor Emmanuel announcing he intends to bill Smollett for the cost of the investigation into what officials say was a hoax hate crime. Per De Mar, Emmanuel said he wants the memo of the reimbursement to read: “For Hoax,” “I’m sorry”. That comes after one of Smollett’s lawyer’s, Tina Glandian, suggested the Osundairo brothers, the pair who say Smollett hired them to stage the hate Continue reading "Jussie Smollett’s Lawyers: Chicago Mayor and Police Owe Actor an Apology"

Fox & Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade slammed Cook County State Attorney Kim Foxx after the charges against Empire actor Jussie Smollett were dropped at their request. Foxx had recused herself from the case because she had conversations with Smollett’s family. “If people don’t know how the justice system works, and more specifically, alternative prosecution diversion, pre-trial diversion, this would seem like an odd outcome,” she told CBS Chicago. “But it doesn’t surprise me that people and their sense of justice would think that a different outcome would make sense.” “I don’t know what is crazier, the fact that he is not contrite or admits anything now or he dreamed the whole thing up to begin with,” Kilmeade said. “And also they have to get stories straight, he was attacked by two MAGA supporters or he was attacked by two Nigerian Continue reading "Brian KIlmeade Mocks State Prosecutor’s Claim People Who Are Upset at Smollett Case Don’t Understand the Law"

Tina Glandian, a lawyer for Empire actor Jussie Smollett, accused the two brothers involved in the alleged hate crime hoax, that was planned by Smollett, of lying about his role in the reported attack. “You know Jussie has said he’s been truthful and consistent throughout this case. But he said at the beginning he didn’t know who he encountered that night. He knew it was the brothers, didn’t he,” ABC’s George Stephanopoulos asked. “He did not. The — the attackers were masked. He only saw one of them. One of them approached him from behind. And he was wearing a mask. And so he did not identify them. He initially had a really hard time believing that they could be involved because he knew one of them and we could only speculate as to motivation, Glandian said. Stephanopoulos said police have phone records of the conversations between the Continue reading "Jussie Smollett’s Lawyer: The Two Brothers Are ‘Absolutely’ Lying About the Alleged Staged Attack"

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel continued to express frustration with the Cook County prosecutors deciding to drop all charges against actor Jussie Smollett he allegedly staged a hate crime against himself. Prosecutors said dropping the charges does not mean they believe he is innocent, but it was not a priority. “You have the state’s attorney’s office saying he’s not exonerated, he actually did commit this hoax. He’s saying he’s innocent and his words aren’t true. They better get their story straight,” Emanuel said. “This is making a fool of all of us. You know, all over the city of Chicago, George, there are signs on front yards and windows that says ‘hate has no home here.’ He turned those values upside down and inside out. He abused the city of Chicago and actually committed a crime here and lied about something and, remember, the grand jury indicted him when only Continue reading "Rahm Emanuel: Jussie Smollett and Cook County Prosecutors ‘Better Get Their Stories Straight’"

With Empire actor Jussie Smollett having all charges dropped against him at the request of the prosecution, MSNBC legal analyst Midwin Charles said the Chicago police department has a bad reputation when it comes to “lying and covering up” crimes. She specifically pointed to the case of Laquan McDonald. “But again, you know, you’re talking about a Chicago police department that’s already been struggling with a sullied reputation after police officer Jason Van Dyke was found guilty of shooting 17-year-old black teen Laquan McDonald and there was an extensive coverup. And when it came to truth-telling and when it came to, you know, being the shining light of truthfulness, the Chicago PD unfortunately was not it,” she said. “But I can’t imagine, when you’re pointing to the situation with Laquan McDonald, to bring the Chicago PD

Prosecutors in Los Angeles laid out the charges against Michael Avenatti, the boisterous lawyer known for his jabs and tweets against President Donald Trump, where he is being charged with bank and wire fraud. These charges are separate from those brought by federal prosecutors with the South District of New York, where they say he attempted to extort Nike for a large amount of money for him and his client. “The case is a result of two years of tax collections and investigative efforts by the IRS. The federal criminal complaints Mr. Avenatti with wire fraud and bank fraud and contains a series of allegations of payments and ugly picture of lawless conduct and greed,” U.S Attorney Nick Hanna announced. “On his Twitter account, Mr. Avenatti describes himself as ‘Attorney, advocate, fighter for the good. Speaking at Oxford University in a clip released by CBS News,  Stormy Daniels said that if the allegations against Michael Avenatti turn out to be true, he is done as her lawyer. “I’m sure Michael’s not going to like this, but until I know all of the candidates and their platforms, I will not endorse anyone. But I am open-minded,” Daniels said one day after her lawyer’s arrest, referring to the fact that Avenatti is considering a 2020 run. Then after noting that she has been “bombarded” with information since the news broke about Avenatti’s arrest on domestic violence charges she added: “I will say that right now there are just allegations and I’m going to reserve judgment and I hope that everyone does, because trust me, I know what it feels like to be on the other end of that, until all the details are discovered.” She also acknowledged Continue reading "Stormy Daniels Says She Will ‘Definitely’ Fire Avenatti if Domestic Abuse Allegations are True"

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a statement on Thursday that Americans deserve “real action” on gun control in wake of the mass shooting in California that left 12 dead. “Our nation awoke to news of a mass shooting of staggering tragedy and heartbreak. It is particularly wrenching that this attack was carried out at a bar hosting a college night, targeting innocent young people enjoying an evening of music and community,” Pelosi wrote.
