In her interview over the weekend with Ralph Northam, CBS’ Gayle King pushed back on the Virginia governor when he used the term “indentured servants” as a euphemism for slavery. Northam told King he has no intention of resigning from his job despite the ongoing controversy of his KKK and blackface yearbook photo. As Northam defended himself by saying he could still lead the state through the healing process, he started to talk about Virginia’s history with race. “We are now at the 400-year anniversary — just 90 miles from here in 1619. The first indentured servants from Africa landed on our shores in Old Point Comfort, what we call now Fort Monroe…,” Northam said. “Also known as slavery,” King interjected. “Yes,” Northam agreed. Typically, indentured servitude is thought of as a system in which someone enters into a voluntary labor agreement to pay off a debt to somebody Continue reading "Gayle King Corrects Gov. Embattled Virginia Governor and moonwalking expert Ralph Northam says he’s “not going anywhere” because the people of his state need “someone that can heal.” On Face the Nation on Sunday, host of CBS This Morning Gayle King was on to preview her interview, airing Monday, with the governor. In the clip, King asked Northam why he still thinks he deserves the job “when so many people are calling for you to step down?” “Virginia needs someone that can heal,” Northam said. “There’s no better person to do that than a doctor. Virginia also needs someone who is strong, who has empathy, who has courage and who has a moral compass. And that’s why I’m not going anywhere.” Northam has admitted to wearing blackface while impersonating Michael Jackson at a 1984 dance contest, but has denied that he was in a yearbook photograph depicting a man in blackface Continue reading "Gov. On Thursday night, CBS News host Gayle King expressed her fear in the wake of the widespread bomb scares that targeted high-profile Democrats and CNN. King kicked off her interview on The Late Show by warning Stephen Colbert that she was wearing her “terror face” because of the events that took place this week. “Is the person behind this just incompetent or they just trying to scare us?” King asked. “If they’re just trying to scare us, mission accomplished. I’m not kidding. I just said to the driver on my way over here, ‘Are you worried?’ And he goes, ‘Yeah, I am worried. I am worried.'” The CBS This Morning host pointed out how Colbert doesn’t look worried, to which he joked by saying he wasn’t because he’s “America’s sweetheart” and everybody “loves” him. “There’s the emotional effect it has on anyone,” Colbert said, “certainly people who Continue reading "Gayle King: ‘I’m Not Even a Critic’ of Trump and ‘I’m Worried’ About These Bomb Scares"

On Thursday night, CBS News host Gayle King weighed in on the controversy surrounding NBC’s outgoing Today host Megyn Kelly. Earlier this week, Megyn Kelly made comments about wearing blackface on Halloween that sparked fierce backlash and recent reports suggests that she is currently negotiating an exit deal with NBC, which King assessed is “not looking good” for the Fox News alum. Stephen Colbert then asked the CBS This Morning host about what she thought about Kelly’s remarks and her apology. “Listen, I have blackface 24/7 so it is never an issue for me,” King responded. “I thought Andy Lack, who runs NBC, summed it up very nicely when he said it was a very unfortunate thing.” King told the Late Show host that she and Megyn Kelly had “bonded” at the Kentucky Derby two years ago and that she likes her. “I think she’s a very smart Continue reading "Gayle King: I’m Surprised a ‘Smart Cookie’ Like Megyn Kelly Would ‘Make a Mistake of That Kind’"

It’s been a big day for CBS Morning News so far, in large part to Omarosa Manigault and the promotional tour of her new controversial tell-all book Unhinged. Earlier we learned that there is a secretly recorded tape of Trump campaign officials discussing the candidate’s alleged use of the “n-word” and that Omarosa denies any romantic relationship with the commander-in-chief. But it was the addressing of her secretive tapings of many phone calls and discussions that are central to both her allegations and criticisms levelled towards the former reality show contestant turned Senior Presidential Adviser to the Trump administration. Host John Dickerson flatly asked Omarosa why she felt the need to secretly tape so many discussions, to which she plainly replied that she felt the need to cover her back. Why? “Because everyone in the Trump world lies,” she proclaimed. Watch the clip above, courtesy of CBS Morning News.

Omarosa Manigault Newman appeared on CBS Morning to promote her controversial new tell-all book Unhinged, which paints a most unflattering portrait of President Donald Trump. The topic du jour is Omarosa’s allegation that Trump had used the “n-word” multiple times while on the set of the reality show The Apprentice where the two first met roughly a decade and a half ago. Amid the back and forth between President Trump and Omarosa there have been alleged rumors of an illicit romantic relationship. At least according to CBS Morning co-host Gayle King who challenged the former Senior Presidential Adviser in the Trump White House. Omarosa stridently rebuked the notion that there was any personal romance between the two, instead calling theirs a “symbiotic relationship” in which the reality show host and self-proclaimed billionaire was her mentor. She continued to claim that the unsubstantiated rumor of affairs was a standard play to explain Continue reading "Gayle King Challenges Omarosa About Rumors of Romantic Relationship With Trump"

Okay, so maybe migrant children are being kept in cages. But don’t say that because that makes us sound really bad. That’s the gist of what Border Patrol told CBS News’ Gayle King about their detention methods for illegal immigrants, King reported Monday. “They are ‘very uncomfortable,’ in their words, with [the] characterization of the word ‘cages,'” she said. “They said it’s not inaccurate, but they’re very uncomfortable with the use of the word ‘cages.’ They said they may be cages but they’re not being treated like animals.” “I know a lot of people looking at that don’t entirely see the distinction,” she added drily. Upon being asked what the immigrants’ expectations were when they arrived here, King explained that many of them have relatives in the States and thought coming into the country would be fairly simple. “Their expectation is that they would come, they would fill Continue reading "Border Patrol Chides CBS News For Use of ‘Cages’: It’s Not Inaccurate, But We’re ‘Uncomfortable’ With Word"

CBS News’s Gayle King is at the U.S. southern border in Texas Monday to cover the separation of child migrants from their families amidst a public backlash to the Trump administration policy. King, who arrived at the border on Sunday, said she first visited a border patrol facility in McAllen, Texas where hundreds of children were being detained. “We arrived yesterday afternoon,” she said on Monday. “We went straight to the location where kids and their parents were reunited. All I can say after talking to the people, watching the people, listening to the people: the Statue of Liberty I think is weeping right now.” “It’s unbelievable the stories that we’ve heard, and we’ll share them with you through the course of these two hours,” she said. King spoke with CBS News reporter David Begnaud, who visited one Texas facility in which thousands were being processed, and Continue reading "Gayle King at Southern Border: the Statue of Liberty is ‘Weeping Right Now’"

Gayle King is the co-anchor of CBS This Morning and an editor at large at Oprah’s magazine. She also has some thoughts on the #MeToo movement and Roseanne Barr’s firing that are sure to stir some controversy. In an interview with Audie Cornish of The New York Times, King called for more due process when accusations of sexual harassment and sexual misconduct are made. “I think when a woman makes an accusation, the man instantly gets the death penalty. There has to be some sort of due process here,” she said.  “All of these inappropriate behaviors are not all the same.” Then, repeatedly referring back to the case of her friend Charlie Rose, she also said that she thinks that in some cases, firing is too harsh of a punishment for the crime. In the case of Roseanne Barr, however, King thought it was entirely appropriate for Barr Continue reading "Gayle King Calls for Due Process in #MeToo Claims: ‘Behaviors are Not all the Same’"

A fair number of newscasters were live from Windsor Castle today for the royal wedding, and when the royal couple’s carriage went by after the ceremony, they all understandably got very excited. Al Roker may have honestly been the most excited of all. As you can hear in the video above, he calls out to Meghan Markle, the new Duchess of Sussex, and was clearly loving every minute of this. But he wasn’t the only one. Over on MSNBC, Stephanie Ruhle and Katy Tur shouted out and waved to the royal couple as well:

Gayle King said she was feeling nauseous on Thursday as she acknowledged the news that the sexual allegations against Charlie Rose were worse than previously reported. Washington Post has released a story reporting that the misconduct claims against King’s old co-anchor were “more numerous than previously known,” and that CBS heard concerns about his conduct for years. 27 more women came forward to accuse Rose of sexual harassment in the new report. As King brought this up on CBS This Morning, she began by saying she was having “a very bad case of deja vu.” “I feel sick to my stomach,” King said. “I don’t know what Continue reading "Gayle King Reacts to New Report on Charlie Rose Allegations: ‘I Still Consider Him a Friend…’"

CBS News’s Gayle King pressed House Speaker Paul Ryan on Thursday morning over his relationship with President Trump and his decision to not pursue re-election. As the outgoing House Speaker spoke with CBS, King brought up the critics who wondered why Ryan rarely stood up to Trump over his various controversies, even when they were “personally offensive to you.” Ryan insisted that he has “very good dialogue” with the president, that he’s happy with the GOP’s political accomplishments, and that his retirement from Capitol Hill has nothing to do with any “Trump fatigue.” King continued to grill Ryan on whether Trump’s antics ever made his job more difficult, asking him “do you ever feel that you had to compromise your personal values to play along and get along?” “We obviously have our differences and we have disagreed publicly and privately, but I do believe I’ve been doing Continue reading "Gayle King Grills Paul Ryan on Exit: Did You ‘Compromise Your Personal Values’ For Trump?"

On Tuesday, Gayle King addressed on CBS This Morning the current discussions about whether her best friend, Oprah Winfrey, will run for president someday. Ever since Winfrey’s electrifying speech at the Golden Globes, a lot of people have said that she could be a real threat to Donald Trump if she decided to run for president in 2020. King said that Winfrey is “intrigued” by the idea, though she insisted that her friend did not intend for her speech to be a launchpad for presidential ambitions. Winfrey has told reporters in the past that she’s never seriously considered running for president before. King acknowledged that the media mogul “loves this country and would like to be of Continue reading "Gayle King on Calls for Oprah to Run for President: ‘She’s Intrigued By the Idea…’"

A new report indicates that CBS This Morning would really like Oprah Winfrey to at least temporarily step in and fill the void left by Charlie Rose. The network fired Rose yesterday as more and more women have come out and accused the former anchor of sexual harassment and various inappropriate behavior. As CBS tries to move forward, Page Six heard from a source who said they are trying to convince Winfrey to take Rose’s place next to Norah O’Donnell and Gayle King. “They are begging Oprah to fill in,” said the source. “Not full time…But they are hoping she’ll do one day, two days, one hour, fill in until Christmas. Anything.” King is one of Winfrey’s best friends, and the CBS host is editor-at-large for Winfrey’s magazine. Winfrey became a part-time CBS correspondent for 60 Minutes earlier this year, and yesterday, King said her friend reached out to Continue reading "CBS This Morning Reportedly ‘Begging’ Oprah Winfrey to Replace Charlie Rose"

On Tuesday night, Stephen Colbert addressed the controversy that hit his network this week with the recent sexual harassment allegations of Charlie Rose. Colbert informed his audience that Rose was fired from CBS because what he was being accused of was “disturbing and strange.” Among the lewd phone calls, groping, and nudity, he also pointed out that Rose gave unwanted shoulder rubs, something his employees referred to as “the crusty paw.” “And you may make three wishes upon the accursed paw, all of which are… to not get a back rub from Charlie Rose,” he quipped The Late Show host joked that these allegations from The Charlie Rose Show made it the biggest scandal at PBS “since it was revealed that PBS is short for ‘pubes.'” Colbert later pulled an excerpt from the Washington Post bombshell that had one accuser claim that she was invited to his Continue reading "Colbert Slams Former CBS Colleague Charlie Rose: ‘It’s a Harrowing and Terrible Abuse of Power’"

On Tuesday night, Gayle King appeared on The Late Show and commented on the firing of her CBS This Morning co-host Charlie Rose. The Washington Post dropped a bombshell report yesterday about eight women who accused the veteran news journalist of sexual harassment, including lewd phone calls, groping, and exposing his nude body in his home. Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell addressed the controversy on Tuesday morning’s broadcast. King told Stephen Colbert that she almost canceled the interview that she mentioned was booked weeks ago in hopes to promoting Oprah’s Favorite Things for the holidays. Colbert expressed how “proud” he was of King, O’Donnell, and everyone on the CBS News team for how they covered the news “objectively Continue reading "Gayle King Opens Up About Charlie Rose’s Firing From CBS: ‘It’s Still Very Painful’"

Limbaugh Suggests Charlie Rose Coverup: How Could Norah O’Donnell and Gayle King ‘Not Know?’

Early Tuesday, CBS This Morning co-hosts Norah O’Donnell and Gayle King delivered strong, emotional comments in the wake of reports alleging multiple incidents of sexual harassment against their (now former) colleague Charlie Rose. But was it all an act? One major conservative media figure is suggesting that may be the case. On his syndicated radio show Tuesday, Rush Limbaugh (in audio flagged by Media Matters) expressed skepticism that O’Donnell and King were, in fact, truly oblivious to the allegations against Rose. “You telling me they didn’t know?” Limbaugh said. “They claim they didn’t know. How can that be? They’re journalists! They’re supposed to be curious! How can they not know?!” The radio host seemed to back off just a bit as he continued — allowing, at least, for the possibility that the CBS This Morning co-hosts were in the dark about Rose’s alleged misconduct. But Continue reading "Limbaugh Suggests Charlie Rose Coverup: How Could Norah O’Donnell and Gayle King ‘Not Know?’"

The Hollywood Reporter hosted a hard-hitting anchor roundtable and was it ever illuminating. In attendance were Savannah Guthrie, Jake Tapper, George Stephanopoulos, Bret Baier, and Gayle King. Yeah, you read that right: NBC, CNN, ABC, Fox, and CBS were all represented. Of course, they got to chatting about the election that all five of them covered for their very different networks. Tapper immediately said he thinks coverage should have been more policy-focused and he has plans to implement that in the 2018 and 2020 elections. Baier pointed out that they’d all focused too much on polls. When asked the biggest challenge faced by journalism at this time, Stephanopoulos mused, “The Continue reading "‘More Policy’ and ‘Less Polls’: Five Anchors Reflect on How They’d Cover the Election Differently"

Scarlett Johansson put Ivanka Trump on blast in an interview with Arianna Huffington at the Women in the World Summit in New York City on Thursday. During Trump’s recent interview with Gayle King, she said that most of her impact in her father’s administration won’t be vocal, but behind the scenes. She said, “That means that I’ll take hits from some critics who say that I should take to the streets and then other people will in, the long-term respect, where I get to.” The award-winning actress wasn’t buying it. She described Trump’s interview as “baffling,” saying,”You can’t have it both ways, right? If you take a job as a public advocate, then you must advocate publicly, right?” Jonhansson found Trump’s remarks about working behind the scenes particularly “disappointing,” and took issue with the antiquated idea that behind every great man there is a great woman. “How old-fashioned!
