Former FBI Director James Comey indirectly responded to President Donald Trump‘s latest tweets blasting him this morning. Trump’s tweetstorm against “Lyin’ James Comey” came in response to the stunning New York Times report that the FBI opened an inquiry into whether the President was working on behalf of Russia following his firing of Comey.

The New York Times dropped a pretty stunning report tonight on an action taken by the FBI in the wake of President Donald Trump‘s firing of James Comey. According to the Times, FBI officials were so alarmed by this move that “they began investigating whether he had been working on behalf of Russia against American interests”:
Counterintelligence investigators had to consider whether the president’s own actions constituted a possible threat to national security. Agents also sought to determine whether Mr. Trump was knowingly working for Russia or had unwittingly fallen under Moscow’s influence… Agents and senior F.B.I. officials had grown suspicious of Mr. Trump’s ties to Russia during the 2016 campaign but held off on opening an investigation into him, the people said, in part because they were uncertain how to proceed with an inquiry of such sensitivity and magnitude. But the president’s activities before and Continue reading "FBI Reportedly Opened Inquiry Into Whether Trump Was Working for Russia After Comey Firing"

Trump: ‘It’s a Disgrace What’s Happening in Our Country, But Other Than That I Wish Everybody a Very Merry Christmas’

President Donald Trump went on a tear against Democrats today in the middle of comments about the border wall, before going on a tangent about James Comey. Trump blasted Democrats for opposing his border wall and accusing them of hypocrisy, claiming “the only time they went against it––it was only one time––when Donald Trump said we want to build the wall.” He brought up Comey as an example, saying the Democrats “hated him,” but then after he fired the head of the FBI, they were immediately flipping out and asking why he would fire him. “As soon as I fired him, it was a terrible thing to do,” he continued. “It’s a disgrace what’s happening in our country. But other than that, I wish everybody a very Merry Christmas. Thank you very much.” You can watch above, via Fox News. [image via screengrab]

Comey Swipes at Trump Over Mattis Leaving: Concept of Resigning on Principle ‘Must Be Confusing’ to Him

Former FBI Director James Comey took a shot at President Donald Trump over the surprising resignation of Defense Secretary James Mattis. Mattis made his decision after President Donald Trump‘s announcement about withdrawing in Syria, basically saying in his resignation letter that he and the President have very different worldviews and he should pick a Defense Secertary who shares his. Trump apparently “hates” Mattis’ letter, and he has tweeted since it leaked in defense of his decision. This afternoon Comey dryly tweeted, “To a president without any external ethical framework, folks who resign on principle must be confusing.” [image via screengrab]

Former FBI director James Comey is expected to be subpoenaed by the House Judiciary Committee. Chairman Bob Goodlatte is ready, per multiple reports, to issue subpoenas against both him and former AG Loretta Lynch. According to CNN, it’s going to happen Monday “for Comey to appear for a closed-door deposition on November 29 and for Lynch to appear on December 5.” In a a statement to CNN, Comey’s lawyer said, “We have not heard from them since October 1 when we advised the Committees (Judiciary and Oversight and Reform) that, while we respectfully declined their invitation for a closed door interview, we would welcome the opportunity to testify in a public hearing.” And Comey himself tweeted that he favors a public hearing:

I Went to the Reagan Library to Ask Ken Starr a Key Question About Trump & Here’s What Happened

On Thursday evening of this week, I went to the magnificent Ronald Reagan Presidential Library here in Southern California to hear a presentation from former Special Prosecutor Ken Starr. He was there to speak about his new book Contempt, which details his investigation into Bill Clinton that eventually led to the president’s impeachment, and the loss of his law license. Having already interviewed Starr extensively, in person, back in 2006 on my old Los Angeles radio show, I wasn’t there to learn anything new about the Clinton saga. Instead, I had a very specific question I wanted to ask him about a position he has taken regarding President Donald Trump’s possible impeachment. My request for a formal interview had been declined, for some unknown reason, by his publicist, so I knew my only opportunity would be to wait until the public question and answer period at the end Continue reading "I Went to the Reagan Library to Ask Ken Starr a Key Question About Trump & Here’s What Happened"

In an op-ed published by The New York Times on Sunday, former FBI director James Comey defended the bureau’s ability to conduct an investigation into the sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh but stressed that “if truth were the only goal, there would be no clock.” Defending the agency’s ability to investigate, Comey noted that an investigation could be conducted into allegations that happened years ago because time has “very little” to do with memories. “Yes, the alleged incident occurred 36 years ago,” he said. “But F.B.I. agents know time has very little to do with memory. They know every married person remembers the weather on their wedding day, no matter how long ago. Significance drives memory. They also know that little lies point to bigger lies. They know that obvious lies by the nominee about the meaning of words in a yearbook are Continue reading "Comey Speaks Out on Kavanaugh Probe in NY Times Op-Ed: FBI Knows That ‘Little Lies Point to Bigger Lies’"

James Comey on Kavanaugh: ‘Small Lies Matter’

On Thursday night, former FBI director James Comey responded to Brett Kavanaugh‘s testimony by tweeting out, “small lies matter.” “Small lies matter, even about yearbooks,” Comey wrote. “From the standard jury instruction: ‘If a witness is shown knowingly to have testified falsely about any material matter, you have a right to distrust such witness’ other testimony and you may reject all the testimony of that witness …'” Comey appeared to be referring to the Democratic senators’ questioning of Kavanaugh over his high school yearbook, including a heated exchange with Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse. During that exchange, Kavanaugh claimed Continue reading "James Comey on Kavanaugh: ‘Small Lies Matter’"

Comey Hints Mueller Probe is Wrapping Up: He May Be ‘In the Fourth Quarter’

Former FBI Director James Comey thinks Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s probe may be headed for the finish line. In an interview with St. Louis Public Radio (via the Daily Caller), Comey said that Paul Manafort flipping could signal that Mueller is wrapping up his work. “[There’s] an argument to be made that the conviction – the plea and cooperation by Paul Manafort – may represent that we’re in the fourth quarter,” Comey said. Mueller, Comey notes, is getting ever closer to President Donald Trump. And that, according to the former FBI Director, could be a sign the probe is drawing to a close. “The way you normally do investigations is you work from the bottom up, and so they’re getting pretty high,” he said. Comey did add, “I’m hesitant to even say that is Bob Mueller’s conducted his investigation like a pro – you know nothing about it Continue reading "Comey Hints Mueller Probe is Wrapping Up: He May Be ‘In the Fourth Quarter’"

President Donald Trump claimed in an interview that there are “100 pictures” of Special Counsel Robert Mueller and former FBI Director James Comey “hugging and kissing each other.” Trump spoke to the Daily Caller on Wednesday, and the website released a full transcript of the interview on Wednesday morning. At one point, Trump called Mueller’s probe into Russian interference and his campaign “an illegal investigation” that “should’ve never been started.” The Daily Caller asked Trump about his interview with Mueller to serve as FBI Director and asked the president why he didn’t give him the job. “But I had a business dispute with Mueller before that,” Trump replied. “I had a real business dispute.” He continued:
“And he’s Comey’s best friend. And I could give you 100 pictures of him and Comey hugging and kissing each other. You know, he’s Comey’s best friend. How can Continue reading "Trump Claims There Are ‘100 Pictures’ of Mueller and Comey ‘Hugging and Kissing Each Other’"

President Donald Trump unleashed on Attorney General Jeff Sessions for Justice Department investigations into two Republican congressmen, complaining that the charges hurt the GOP in the midterm elections. “Two long running, Obama era, investigations of two very popular Republican Congressmen were brought to a well publicized charge, just ahead of the Mid-Terms, by the Jeff Sessions Justice Department,” Trump tweeted on Monday. “Two easy wins now in doubt because there is not enough time.” “Good job Jeff,” he added. Chris Wallace: Comey’s Firing Led to Special Counsel, So Only Person Trump Can Blame Is Himself

President Donald Trump has publicly and privately groused about Jeff Sessions‘ recusal causing so many problems for him. Fox News’ Chris Wallace said he also has himself to blame too. In an interview yesterday with Bloomberg, the President had this to say about his embattled attorney general:
President Donald Trump said Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s job is safe at least until the midterm elections in November… “I just would love to have him do a great job,” Trump said Thursday in an Oval Office interview with Bloomberg News. Asked if he’d keep Sessions beyond November, he declined to comment. “I’d love to have him look at the other side,” he said, reiterating calls for Sessions’s Justice Department to investigate Democrat Hillary Clinton and the origins of the Russia probe.
So Sessions won’t be fired, at least for now. Wallace told Trace Gallagher this afternoon Sessions has clearly been Continue reading "Chris Wallace: Comey’s Firing Led to Special Counsel, So Only Person Trump Can Blame Is Himself"

Trump Touts a Poll Finding Majority Thinks Brennan, Comey Should Have Clearances Revoked

After ordering the revocation of John Brennan‘s security clearance and threatening to do the same with others like James Comey and Bruce Ohr, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to tout a poll backing him up on that. The Hill reported Monday on a Harvard CAPS/Harris poll showing that 59 percent of registered voter support Brennan losing his clearance, while 64 percent said the same of Comey. Brennan decried the President’s political move against him, and Comey put out a statement blasting Trump too. But Trump has stood by it and is reportedly ready to act against other critics with clearance soon. And tonight he tweeted about the poll: Trump tweeted about the poll after sending messages Continue reading "Trump Touts a Poll Finding Majority Thinks Brennan, Comey Should Have Clearances Revoked"

Why Won’t Those Who Claim to Be ‘Pro-Law Enforcement’ Defend Our Law Enforcement Leaders?

Editor’s Note: This piece originally appeared on July 19 but is being republished in the wake of President Trump’s latest attack on Robert Mueller. In Shakespeare‘s Henry VI, Dick “The Butcher” proclaims, in one of the scribe’s most quoted and notorious lines, “The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.” The phrase is cited, in most instances, either as a crude lawyer joke or, at the least, as a preamble to some critique of my legal brethren. In reality, however, Shakespeare may have been doing just the opposite, alluding to the critical role lawyers play in maintaining law and order. After all, the line appears as Jack Cade and his team of conspirators discuss overthrowing the government and killing those guardians of law, the argument goes, as was necessary to clear the path for their villainy. It’s hard not to be reminded of the Continue reading "Why Won’t Those Who Claim to Be ‘Pro-Law Enforcement’ Defend Our Law Enforcement Leaders?"

Giuliani Clarifies ‘Truth Isn’t Truth’ Comment: ‘Not Meant as a Pontification on Moral Theology’

President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani raised the nation’s eyebrows yesterday when during an impassioned debate with Meet the Press host Chuck Todd, he proclaimed “truth isn’t truth!” Given Trump’s past comments that “what you are seeing and what you are reading is not what’s happening” and Kellyanne Conway’s infamous “alternative facts” comment, many laid into this administration’s obvious obfuscation of objectivity as a last tactic in a lowing political war over the Mueller investigation. This morning, the former New York Mayor cleaned up his Sunday morning comment with a tweet that clarified the intended meaning of his comment: Despite Continue reading "Giuliani Clarifies ‘Truth Isn’t Truth’ Comment: ‘Not Meant as a Pontification on Moral Theology’"

James Comey Contradicts Giuliani: ‘Truth Exists and Truth Matters’

On Sunday, former FBI director James Comey took to Twitter to stress truth “matters.” “Truth exists and truth matters,” Comey wrote. “Truth has always been the touchstone of our country’s justice system and political life. People who lie are held accountable. If we are untethered to truth, our justice system cannot function and a society based on the rule of law dissolves.” Comey did not indicate the reason for his tweet. However, his statements contradict a notion about truth made by Donald Trump‘s lawyer Rudy Giuliani earlier in the day on Meet the Press. Comey Rips Trump Over Security Clearance Threat: ‘Politicians Enabling’ Him Should Be Held Accountable

Former FBI Director James Comey put out a statement on Twitter tonight criticizing President Donald Trump for his threats to revoke security clearances. He already revoked John Brennan‘s, and Sarah Huckabee Sanders said today the administration is looking at taking similar action against Comey, James Clapper, Michael Hayden, etc. Comey tonight not only called out Trump for taking such action but said that politicians “enabling” him should be “held accountable.” You can read his full statement below:
“Once again this president is sending a message that he will punish people who disagree with him and reward those who praise him. In a democracy, security clearances should not be used as pawns in a petty political game to distract voters from even bigger problems. This president befriends and praises despots and dictators like Putin and Kim Jong-un. Those friends provide stark contrast to the patriotic Americans and Continue reading "Comey Rips Trump Over Security Clearance Threat: ‘Politicians Enabling’ Him Should Be Held Accountable"

Chris Cuomo Confronts Giuliani for Changing Comments on Trump-Comey Meeting: So Comey’s a ‘Crazy Liar’?

CNN’s Chris Cuomo spoke with Rudy Giuliani tonight to again try and make sense of the latest flip-flop from President Donald Trump‘s lawyer. Giuliani denied to Tapper that he ever said Trump told James Comey to give Michael Flynn a break. Minutes later Tapper showed him the video of him directly saying that. After talking about Omarosa, Cuomo told Giuliani tonight, “I cannot find you ever saying the president did not have that conversation with Comey until this weekend.” Giuliani insisted he did so from the beginning, and Cuomo asked, “Why do you keep arguing in the alternative if you have high ground that it never happened?” “Because I can get him out of it legally,” Giuliani responded. “I can get him out of it factually. He’s got both defenses.” For this to be true, Cuomo pointed out, Comey would have to be a “crazy Continue reading "Chris Cuomo Confronts Giuliani for Changing Comments on Trump-Comey Meeting: So Comey’s a ‘Crazy Liar’?"

James Comey: We Should Be ‘Disagreeing Without Hating,’ the Russians Are Exploiting Our Divisions

Former FBI Director James Comey tweeted a call for more civil and respectful political disagreement this afternoon. “We must get better at disagreeing without hating,” he said. “The Russians know ‘a house divided against itself cannot stand.’ So they push us on social media from all sides. If we stand together as Americans and debate issues respectfully, then our true enemies will be defeated.” Comey also appears to ascribe to the philosophy of “never read the comments”:
