Jeffrey Toobin is not just CNN’s Chief Legal analyst, he is also a remarkably accomplished writer for The New Yorker, and during a Monday morning visit to the set of New Day, his two jobs interested as he spoke about a recent article about Roger Stone and Jerome Corsi published Sunday evening. The long-form article mostly portrays the Kafka-esque political comedy of the former colleagues now turned legal rivals amidst the backdrop of the Mueller investigation but includes some fun and silly details as well. One such example is Stone’s fundraising ploy, which reads “In a pair of cardboard boxes, there were dozens of polished rocks, which Stone was autographing and selling: “Roger stones,” to benefit his legal-defense fund.” At the end of Monday’s New Day segment, Toobin spoke of the autograph stone gambit, even holding an example up for viewers to see. He made clear that Continue reading "CNN’s John Berman Jokes About Jeffrey Toobin Having His Hands on Roger’s ‘Stones’"

BREAKING: Parent Company of National Enquirer Responds to Jeff Bezos: AMI ‘Fervently Believes It Acted Lawfully’

After the explosive Medium post Thursday by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos blasting the National Enquirer and parent company AMI, as well as chairman and CEO David Pecker, the board (which includes Pecker) has issued a response. CNN read the response on the air a few minutes ago (above), in full. Here is that statement:
“American Media fervently believes that it acted lawfully in the reporting of the story of Mr. Bezos. Further, at the time of the recent allegations made by Mr. Bezos, it was in good faith negotiations to resolve all matters with him. Nonetheless, in light of the nature of the allegations published by Mr. Bezos, the board has convened and determined that it should promptly and thoroughly investigate the claims. Upon completion of that investigation, the Board will take whatever appropriate action is necessary.”
On CNN, anchor Poppy Harlow turned to legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin and Continue reading "BREAKING: Parent Company of National Enquirer Responds to Jeff Bezos: AMI ‘Fervently Believes It Acted Lawfully’"

CNN Panel Shreds National Enquirer After Bezos Post: ‘Disgraceful Journalism, Appalling Behavior’

CNN’s Situation Room covered the big news of Jeff Bezos accusing the National Enquirer of extortion and blackmail in a comprehensive panel discussion on Thursday night. Jeffrey Toobin told Wolf Blitzer said it really does look like the Enquirer operates on the basis of “either you do what we say or you will be embarrassed and humiliated.” But he also noted the close relationship between David Pecker, the head of the Enquirer‘s parent company AMI, and President Donald Trump:
“[Pecker] told me and he’s told others that the reason he paid Karen McDougal $150,000 was to suppress her story and help Donald Trump get elected president, so the idea that the National Enquirer is some journalistic enterprise that is independent of politics is just absurd.”
Blitzer asked if what Bezos is alleging they did is a crime. Toobin didn’t go that far yet but said, Continue reading "CNN Panel Shreds National Enquirer After Bezos Post: ‘Disgraceful Journalism, Appalling Behavior’"

Jeffrey Toobin: ‘Fox News Exists to Ratify the Biases’ of Its Viewers

The comparison between special counsel Robert Mueller‘s probe and Watergate has been made ad infinitum. But Jeffrey Toobin believes there’s one major difference: Fox News. Appearing with Mediaite’s founder on The Dan Abrams Show on SiriusXM Thursday, the CNN legal analyst suggested that President Donald Trump‘s support may not erode, no matter what the special counsel concludes, because of the network’s reach. “There’s … the incredibly reliable presence of Fox News,” Toobin said. “I don’t think Sean Hannity‘s going to read Robert Mueller’s report and go, ‘Hmmm … I think he’s got some good points there.’ Fox News exists to ratify the biases of the people who already watch.” Toobin went on to say, “I think Fox News is a significant force. There was no Fox News in 1974….I did a profile of [Rep.] Adam Schiff [D-CA] for the New Yorker. He’s been Continue reading "Jeffrey Toobin: ‘Fox News Exists to Ratify the Biases’ of Its Viewers"

CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin: Howard Schultz Is a ‘Gift from God’ to Trump

On Sunday, former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said on 60 Minutes he is seriously considering a run for president as an independent. On Monday, CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin weighed in on what Schultz’s potential run means for President Donald Trump and why it was good news during his very bad week. Toobin started by saying Trump got “such great news this week.” “This was such a bad week for Donald Trump with the Stone indictment, with the shutdown. Howard Schultz is a gift from God to him,” Toobin said, referring to his potential run. He added: “These guys, they’re billionaires so they think they can do anything, and one thing he could do is hand the re-election to Donald Trump and now he has support from Bill Burton.” Burton was a close aide to Barack Obama during his first term. Toobin further added that the one thing we know Continue reading "CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin: Howard Schultz Is a ‘Gift from God’ to Trump"

CNN’s Toobin: I Don’t Think ‘Famous BS Artist’ Roger Stone Is Going to Flip

On Friday, CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin made his case for why he does not think Roger Stone — even facing jail time — will flip and turn witness in the Robert Mueller probe. “You have interviewed him,” Blitzer said during a panel discussion on Stone’s early morning arrest. He then asked Toobin: “What are the chances he will flip, start to cooperate once he faces the prospect — if he is convicted, he is not a young guy — he going to go to jail for years like Paul Manafort… What are the chances he and his lawyers decide we better cooperate to try to reduce the sentence?” Toobin replied he didn’t think it would happen. “I was with Roger Stone in that house two weeks ago. That’s how long and how well I know Roger Stone,” Toobin said. “I don’t think he is going to flip.” Continue reading "CNN’s Toobin: I Don’t Think ‘Famous BS Artist’ Roger Stone Is Going to Flip"

CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin: Indictment ‘Highly Suggestive’ that Trump Himself Directed Stone

“After the July 22, 2016 release of stolen DNC emails by organization one [Wikileaks], a senior [Donald] Trump campaign official was directed to contact [Roger] Stone about any additional releases and what other damaging information organization one had regarding the [Hillary] Clinton campaign. Stone thereafter told the campaign about future releases of damaging material by organization one.” That passage from the Federal indictment of former Trump campaign official Roger Stone got the attention of CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin. In his view, the possibilities on who directed Trump campaign officials are highly limited — to say the least. “That might be an extremely important use of the passive voice in that indictment,” Toobin said. “Was directed. Who directed Trump campaign officials? It sounds to me — and again I only want to say it just sounds to me — like that could Continue reading "CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin: Indictment ‘Highly Suggestive’ that Trump Himself Directed Stone"

Mueller is Reportedly Renewing His Efforts to Interview Trump in Person

Special counsel Robert Mueller has renewed his attempts to get a face-to-face interview with President Donald Trump. According to CNN, the Trump and Mueller teams have been at “loggerheads” for the past five weeks over Mueller’s request to sit down with the president. The question then becomes whether Mueller would take the step of issuing a subpoena for Trump. Appearing on CNN’s New Day Tuesday, legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin suggested that the special counsel would be entering a legal gray area if he were to issue a subpoena. “[S]ubpoenaing the president of the United States is something that has never been ruled on definitively by the courts,” Toobin said. “So if Mueller is going to subpoena the president — first of all, he’s tried to avoid doing that by getting voluntary cooperation. He got the take-home exam answers, which is a poor substitute. But at least it’s something. “The equation Continue reading "Mueller is Reportedly Renewing His Efforts to Interview Trump in Person"

Toobin: Trump Declaring Nat’l Emergency to Get Wall Would Be ‘Complete Departure’ from Norms of Presidential Behavior

On Friday, President Donald Trump said during a press conference that he would consider declaring a national emergency to get his border wall. According to Trump, he would make the declaration “for the security of our country.” Yet, CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin said to do so would be no less than a “complete departure” from the norms of the American presidency. He admitted, though, that if Trump attempted the move, he may get away with it. Toobin’s comments came during a discussion about Trump’s claim. During that discussion,  Justice Reporter Laura Jarrett noted that while Trump does have the power to declare a national emergency, he is supposed to use those powers responsibly. “So there’s no question that he has the discretion to declare a national emergency. He’s the president,” Jarrett said. “But I almost liken it to the pardon power. The question is not whether he can do it Continue reading "Toobin: Trump Declaring Nat’l Emergency to Get Wall Would Be ‘Complete Departure’ from Norms of Presidential Behavior"

CNN’s Toobin Questions What Happened to Trump Inauguration Funds: ‘Did Someone Steal the Money?’

On Thursday, CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin pointed out that the Trump Inauguration planners have some fairly basic questions to answer about where the money collected for the Inauguration festivities went, including “did someone steal the money?” “What is the biggest legal issue here [when it comes to Trump Inauguration funds], as far as you see, the accounting of the money or perhaps the idea there was some pay to play?” CNN host John Berman asked. Toobin replied, “I think the first question is, did someone steal the money? If the money didn’t go to salaries if the money didn’t go to events, did someone put it in their pocket? That’s a straightforward factual issue that an audit should be able to determine.” He then said that there were other questions that needed to be asked. “Then you get into the other subsidiary questions, which are, was there some Continue reading "CNN’s Toobin Questions What Happened to Trump Inauguration Funds: ‘Did Someone Steal the Money?’"

CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin: Giuliani May Be Trying to Get Ahead of News on Contact Between Trump Team and Wikileaks

Jeffrey Toobin believes there may be a method to Rudy Giuliani‘s madness. Giuliani told The Hill Thursday that he does not believe it is crime for a campaign to receive hacked emails — provided no one involved with the campaign did the hacking. Appearing on The Situation Room Thursday, Toobin — CNN’s chief legal analyst — floated the possibility that President Donald Trump‘s attorney is trying to get out in front of news of “more contact between people affiliated with WikiLeaks, and people in the Trump campaign.” “It started at, ‘We had no contact with anyone who knew anything from Russia…No collusion, no nothing.'” Toobin said of the evolving Trump legal team position. “Now it’s, ‘There was contact between people from WikiLeaks and people with the campaign, but it’s not a crime simply to know that other people were engaged in hacking.’ And that’s true Continue reading "CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin: Giuliani May Be Trying to Get Ahead of News on Contact Between Trump Team and Wikileaks"

CNN’s Toobin: No Political Pressure on Democrats to Cave on Wall Because Trump Lost on Issue in Midterms

CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin today wondered why there would be any political pressure on the Democrats to give in to President Donald Trump‘s border demands after how the midterms turned out. The President today talked about the shutdown while in Iraq, saying he’s willing to do “whatever it takes” to get the wall. CNN’s Dana Bash said on The Situation Room today Trump is approaching this as a businessman and “marketer,” particularly given his comments about going to a ground-breaking at the border. Toobin jumped in and recalled the campaign rhetoric about the border:
“I just remembered, too, that the main pitch that Donald Trump made during the 2018 campaign was, ‘I’m going to build a wall, I’m going to be tough on immigration.’ And he lost 40 seats in the House of Representatives. So why are those new legislators afraid of him talking about the wall constantly? It Continue reading "CNN’s Toobin: No Political Pressure on Democrats to Cave on Wall Because Trump Lost on Issue in Midterms"

CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin: Republicans Should Be Running Ideas by Ann Coulter ‘Because Apparently She’s the President’ Now

CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin believes that the entire government shutdown standoff is the result of President Donald Trump having his “manhood” challenged by conservative commentators — one of whom, in his view, has proved to be the heavy on this issue. Appearing on The Situation Room, Toobin picked up the conversation after host Wolf Blitzer said that Republicans have been frustrated by the fact that they don’t know what it will take to get the president to agree to a deal which would avert a shutdown. “What they should be doing, obviously, is checking with Ann Coulter,” Toobin said. “Because apparently she’s the President of the United States, as far as this is concerned.” Toobin, in a scathing rebuke, expressed little optimism for a Coulter-led government. “Laura Ingraham and Ann Coulter started challenging the president’s manhood. And the House Republicans started stamping their feet. And the president Continue reading "CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin: Republicans Should Be Running Ideas by Ann Coulter ‘Because Apparently She’s the President’ Now"

CNN’s Toobin on Mattis’ Departure: ‘There Are No More Grownups in the Room’

On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced via Twitter that General Jim Mattis was resigning as Secretary of Defense. “General Jim Mattis will be retiring, with distinction, at the end of February, after having served my Administration as Secretary of Defense for the past two years,” Trump wrote. Shortly after Trump’s tweet, Mattis’ own resignation letter leaked, indicating that he was actually leaving —  not retiring — because the president needs a secretary of defense whose views are “better aligned” with his own. Responding to the news of Mattis’ departure on CNN, legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin said the Mattis decision was another sign of Trump’s unwillingness to compromise. The legal analyst then stressed that now that Mattis is leaving, the last grown-up in the room is gone too. “You know, the Mattis decision today and the apparent decision to shut down the government over the border wall, I mean, they are Continue reading "CNN’s Toobin on Mattis’ Departure: ‘There Are No More Grownups in the Room’"

CNN’s Toobin on Mueller Reportedly Requesting House Intel Transcript: ‘Unnerving Development’ for Roger Stone

Speaking to CNN’s John Berman on Wednesday, legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin stressed the new Washington Post report suggesting that Special Counsel Robert Mueller requested an official transcript of Roger Stone‘s Congressional testimony is not exactly good news for Stone. “Just like in a tax case, you need the tax return, the official copy of the tax return, not any old Xerox copy,” Toobin said, explaining the need for the request. “Same thing with congressional testimony, it’s got to come from Congress in an official way. This is not a guarantee that Roger Stone is going to be indicted but if you’re Roger Stone, it’s certainly an unnerving development.” Berman then noted that Stone responded to the WaPo story by saying “Mueller would need to prove intent and materiality and no reasonable attorney would conclude that’s happened here in terms of his testimony to Congress.” Toobin, though, wasn’t Continue reading "CNN’s Toobin on Mueller Reportedly Requesting House Intel Transcript: ‘Unnerving Development’ for Roger Stone"

CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin Lauds Trump-Appointed Judge in Jim Acosta Case: ‘Savvy and Wise Resolution’

CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin commended the Federal judge involved in the case between CNN reporter Jim Acosta and the White House, saying he showed “extremely savvy” judgement in his decision. On Friday, Judge Timothy Kelly ruled that the White House must temporarily give back Acosta’s White House press pass, which was suspended after President Donald Trump got into a verbal confrontation with him during a presser. However, Kelly has given the White House a chance to create a solid set of standards to hold Acosta and other correspondents to and the case will go from there. “The next step, as I understand the preliminary ruling, is that the White House has to either drop the whole thing and, you know, patch things up, or establish clearer rules about what justifies the removal of a hard pass and how the accused hard pass abusers are allowed to defend themselves,” Toobin said Continue reading "CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin Lauds Trump-Appointed Judge in Jim Acosta Case: ‘Savvy and Wise Resolution’"

CNN’s Toobin: Jeff Flake Making Empty Threat on Mueller Bill, McConnell Is Going to Squash Him Like a Bug

CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin has regularly criticized Senator Jeff Flake (R- AZ) for not doing enough to match his rhetoric denouncing President Donald Trump. And even with Flake threatening to hold up votes on judicial nominees unless the Senate takes up legislation to protect Robert Mueller, Toobin still isn’t impressed. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell objected to Flake’s unanimous consent request today, and Flake said he told McConnell directly he’ll vote against advancing on these nominees. But Toobin asked this afternoon, “Is there anything more empty in American politics than a threat from Jeff Flake, who has made his entire career by folding every time Mitch McConnell breathes hard?” He elaborated:
“Mitch McConnell is going to squash Jeff Flake like a bug, as he always does. And the idea that Jeff Flake is going to hold up anything to protect Robert Mueller is, in my opinion, absurd. Mitch McConnell Continue reading "CNN’s Toobin: Jeff Flake Making Empty Threat on Mueller Bill, McConnell Is Going to Squash Him Like a Bug"

CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin and Ken Starr Clash Over Interim Attorney General: He’s ‘Obscure’ and ‘Unqualified’

Jeffrey Toobin and former Solicitor General Ken Starr clashed Thursday over new interim Attorney General Matt Whitaker. In a CNN New Day segment helmed by Alisyn Camerota, Toobin challenged Starr about President Donald Trump‘s new pick to be the nation’s top cop. Toobin believes Whitaker’s primary — if not sole — qualification for the job, in Trump’s eyes, is the fact that Whitaker is a critic of Robert Mueller‘s probe. “You know the Department of Justice,” Toobin told Starr. “You know the kind of people who are named Attorney General of the United States. Just what about naming someone frankly this obscure and this unqualified just because he’s been critical of the Mueller investigation?” “That’s a little bit unfair,” Starr replied. “Yes, [deputy AG] Rod Rosenstein is the natural, there’s no question, to become the attorney general. I’ll concede that. But what we do know about Continue reading "CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin and Ken Starr Clash Over Interim Attorney General: He’s ‘Obscure’ and ‘Unqualified’"
