CNN’s Berman: GOP Went from Opposing Exec Power Abuse to Saying ‘Thank You Sean Hannity, May I Have Another’

CNN’s John Berman mocked the Republican Party on Friday for how drastically their position seems to have changed in the President Donald Trump era. New Day started off with Berman and Alisyn Camerota recapping the news that Trump will sign Congress’ compromise bill, but will also declare a national emergency to obtain money for his demanded border wall. Critics say Trump’s move will invite immediate legal challenges and set a bad precedent for the country, and at one point, Berman wondered what Vice President Mike Pence would have to say about this. Back in 2014, Pence criticized former president Barack Obama for his effort to “overturn American immigration law with the stroke of a pen.” Berman remarked on how Pence and other GOPers used to challenge Obama’s “abuse of executive authority” in court, but now they seem like they’d just prefer to fall in line behind Fox News’ Sean Continue reading "CNN’s Berman: GOP Went from Opposing Exec Power Abuse to Saying ‘Thank You Sean Hannity, May I Have Another’"

CNN’s John Berman: Trump Calling Out Rep. Ilhan Omar is the ‘Pot Calling the Kettle Anti-Semite’

CNN New Day discussed President Donald Trump’s condemnation of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s recent tweet that was seen by many as anti-semitic on Wednesday morning, and co-host called out the apparent hypocrisy at play in a manner that was befitting of a Mediaite headline. Co-host John Berman said, “it’s interesting when the president criticizes OMAR for this for talking about Jewish money, it’s an example of the pot calling the kettle anti-Semite.” During a White House cabinet meeting press spray, Trump called on Rep. Omar to resign from her recently elected office despite her “unequivocal” apology for tweeting that Republican members of Congress supported Israel because of the campaign donations from pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC.  Her tweet received bipartisan condemnation and eventually led to her apology. Trump found her apology “lame” before calling her to step down. He did not mention, however, his own past comments to Jewish groups that also Continue reading "CNN’s John Berman: Trump Calling Out Rep. Ilhan Omar is the ‘Pot Calling the Kettle Anti-Semite’"

CNN’s John Berman: ‘Co-President’ Sean Hannity Calls Border Security Deal a Garbage Compromise

News of a compromised border security deal broke Monday night, which if approved and signed by President Donald Trump, would appear to keep the U.S. government shutting down again just three weeks after the record shut down. Details of the compromise are still emerging, but CNN New Day host John Berman put in stark relief the political challenges the Trump administrations face when he noted “Co-President” Sean Hannity called the deal a “garbage compromise.” After running through what is now known as the specifics of the reported deal, Berman noted that its still unclear where Trump stands on it, saying “We do not know if the president will sign on.” He then added “We do know the co-president doesn’t like it. Sean Hannity called it a garbage compromise.” Berman’s citing of Fox News’s prime time host’s displeasure is not just some random dig at a cable Continue reading "CNN’s John Berman: ‘Co-President’ Sean Hannity Calls Border Security Deal a Garbage Compromise"

CNN’s John Berman Jokes About Jeffrey Toobin Having His Hands on Roger’s ‘Stones’

Jeffrey Toobin is not just CNN’s Chief Legal analyst, he is also a remarkably accomplished writer for The New Yorker, and during a Monday morning visit to the set of New Day, his two jobs interested as he spoke about a recent article about Roger Stone and Jerome Corsi published Sunday evening. The long-form article mostly portrays the Kafka-esque political comedy of the former colleagues now turned legal rivals amidst the backdrop of the Mueller investigation but includes some fun and silly details as well. One such example is Stone’s fundraising ploy, which reads “In a pair of cardboard boxes, there were dozens of polished rocks, which Stone was autographing and selling: “Roger stones,” to benefit his legal-defense fund.” At the end of Monday’s New Day segment, Toobin spoke of the autograph stone gambit, even holding an example up for viewers to see. He made clear that Continue reading "CNN’s John Berman Jokes About Jeffrey Toobin Having His Hands on Roger’s ‘Stones’"

Dick Durbin: ‘Technology’ Will Help Stop Illegal Drugs ‘Not Some God Awful Concrete Wall’

Democratic Senator Dick Durbin (IL) slammed President Donald Trump‘s claim that building a wall will help stop drug trafficking, saying technology is more likely to do a better job. “There are things much more important than this President’s mighty wall,” Durbin told CNN’s John Berman Thursday morning. “Slowing down the flow of narcotics in America during the worst drug epidemic in our history, to me, is the highest priority. That requires technology, not some god awful concrete wall.” The senator said 85 percent of trucks entering the country were “not being scanned or x-rayed,” and despite the President’s 124 miles of border fencing in Arizona, people were shipping massive loads of fentanyl in cucumber packages across the border. This all could have been dealt with earlier, Durbin says, if not for Trump’s government shutdown. “For goodness sakes, let’s focus on the things that are important,” said Durbin. “This Continue reading "Dick Durbin: ‘Technology’ Will Help Stop Illegal Drugs ‘Not Some God Awful Concrete Wall’"

Sarah Sanders Insists Trump is Doing ‘Very Well’ in Polls: ‘Rasmussen Had Him at 45%’

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders put some hardcore spin on President Donald Trump‘s stagnant approval ratings in an interview on CNN’s New Day ahead of the State of the Union Tuesday. CNN host John Berman pointed out that the president’s approval rating among independents has remained at a lackluster 41% since 2017. “And I present that because if the goal here is for the president to expand beyond his base, the evidence is, is that’s been a challenge. He hasn’t had results there,” Berman said. “And I wonder if you’ve thought about why?” “I think the president’s primary focus isn’t on results in the polls, of which I think there are a number of them he’s doing very well. Rasmussen had him at 45% just earlier this week,” Sanders replied [Editor’s note: Trump has tweeted about polls literally hundreds of times]. “The biggest focus that Continue reading "Sarah Sanders Insists Trump is Doing ‘Very Well’ in Polls: ‘Rasmussen Had Him at 45%’"

Ex-Trump Aide Defends Trump’s TV Binges: Watching Morning Shows is ‘Part of His Workflow’

Former Trump aide Cliff Sims, the author of the White House tell-all Team of Vipers, defended President Donald Trump‘s very relaxed schedule in an appearance on CNN Tuesday. Axios obtained the last three months of Trump’s schedule, which revealed the president often spends the first five hours of the day in “Executive Time” in the residence, watching TV and making calls. Sims criticized whoever leaked the president’s schedule in his interview on CNN’s New Day, calling it “disgraceful.” He went on to defend the schedule, arguing that while Trump has “a lot of unstructured time… the guy works hard.” “He’s constantly in motion, he’s constantly working during the day, at night,” Sims continued. “He kind of never turns off. That’s my experience with him. So I really think it’s an unfair characterization to say because there’s a lot of unstructured time that that means Continue reading "Ex-Trump Aide Defends Trump’s TV Binges: Watching Morning Shows is ‘Part of His Workflow’"

Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman Tells CNN How He Deals With Patriots Detractors: ‘Why You Gotta Hate? Collaborate!’

Cartoonishly bewhiskered Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman appeared on CNN’s New Day Monday morning, less than 10 hours of helping his New England Patriots team win yet another Lombardi trophy. Proud Boston sports fan and New Day co-host John Berman appeared to channel the 10-year-old version of himself, as he gleefully interviewed the “star” of Sunday evening’s defensive struggle that many viewers thought was less than entertaining. No matter to Patriots and Patriots fans alike; New England got their record sixth Lombardi trophy, and CNN morning programming got the MVP booking. Edelman revealed to his host that, no, he had not yet slept since the game ended. Though all things being considered, Edelman was more clear-eyed and cogent than I certainly would be. And credit to superfan Berman, for asking the indelicate question of Edelman’s four-game suspension at the start of the season for testing positive for using performance-enhancing drugs. But it was Continue reading "Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman Tells CNN How He Deals With Patriots Detractors: ‘Why You Gotta Hate? Collaborate!’"

During her interview with CNN, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked by John Berman how long can people who are furloughed be expected to work without being payed. “Frankly if it was up to us, and certainly if it was up to the president, they wouldn’t be working without pay,” Sanders said. “Which is why the president has actually put something on the table that helps reopens the government, gets those 800,000 workers paid, but it also does something that is fundamental to the survival of our country and that’s protecting our borders, that’s protecting the American citizens.” Sanders further bashed Democrats for going on trips to Puerto Rico and Hawaii as the government shutdown was going on longer than expected. Berman pointed to when President Donald Trump said he would be proud to shut the government down in December of 2018: “He chose this path, he Continue reading "CNN’s John Berman and Sarah Sanders Battle Over People Affected by Shutdown: This Is Over the Wall"

Sarah Sanders Refuses to Deny Trump Directed Roger Stone to Coordinate With WikiLeaks

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders appeared on CNN’s New Day Friday morning and consistently pushed back on host John Berman on questions that have arisen from Friday morning’s news that Roger Stone had been arrested by the FBI. Details from the unsealed indictment reveal that Stone is alleged to have been something of a proxy between the Trump campaign and Wikileaks over the coordinated release of information illegally gained by Russian operatives who are also under indictment by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Berman noted that Sanders was a member of the Trump campaign during this time frame, then asked pointedly “Were you aware of the effort to get in touch with Wikileaks through Roger Stone?” Sanders confirmed that she was a member of the campaign before repeating her standard reply that “there was no collusion, there was no wrongdoing by the president.” She then tried to flip the Continue reading "Sarah Sanders Refuses to Deny Trump Directed Roger Stone to Coordinate With WikiLeaks"

Howard Dean Slams Tulsi Gabbard: Doesn’t ‘Know What She’s Doing’ and ‘Not Qualified’

Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean thinks all the 2020 Democratic candidates are qualified for the presidency, except for Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard. “I’m really not gonna take sides in this,” said Dean on CNN this morning, when asked for his thoughts on Democratic presidential candidates. “There are no candidates, with one exception, that I really don’t think should be president.” “And who’s that exception?” asked CNN’s John Berman. Dean replied, “Tulsi Gabbard. I don’t think she knows what she’s doing and I don’t think she should be qualified. She’s not qualified.” The former governor and DNC chairman based this on a report that Gabbard had met with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad last year, as well as Continue reading "Howard Dean Slams Tulsi Gabbard: Doesn’t ‘Know What She’s Doing’ and ‘Not Qualified’"

CNN’s John Berman, Alisyn Camerota Hilariously Go Off the Rails Over Gillette’s ‘Toxic Masculinity’ Ad

There was some amusing banter between CNN’s John Berman and Alisyn Camerota on Wednesday when they held a discussion about Gillette’s controversial new ad about “toxic masculinity.” The hygienics company has been drawing criticism lately from those who say their new razors commercial demonizes men by drawing a connection between facial hair and negative male stereotypes. As CNN’s New Day panel debated the online commotion over the ad, Camerota remarked that her co-anchor is a man, and that’s when the discussion fell apart from laughter on all sides. Here’s the transcript.
Camerota: Yeah, I mean, you’re a man. What’s wrong — Berman: Appreciate that. Thank you. Finally, finally I get the recognition I deserve. Camerota: And you’re great. Berman: Keep trying, you’re digging yourself out of that hole. Camerota: My point is what’s wrong — since when did role modeling some sort of behavior on TV become virtue-signaling? Berman: Continue reading "CNN’s John Berman, Alisyn Camerota Hilariously Go Off the Rails Over Gillette’s ‘Toxic Masculinity’ Ad"

Rep. Jackie Speier Mocks Trump Claim Democrats Are Calling Him to Defect Over Shutdown: ‘In His Dreams’

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) made fun of President Donald Trump’s claims that Democrats have been calling him offering their support to help end the partial government shutdown on Tuesday during her appearance on CNN. “No, I think maybe in his dreams he’s gotten phone calls from Democrats,” Spier told CNN’s John Berman. “There’s not a Democrat that I’m aware of, in the House, that would have called the President to say, ‘I want to work with you and I want this wall to go up.’ There’s not a Democrat that wants to see five billion dollars wasted.” Spier said there is technology available for the U.S. to use on the U.S.-Mexico border that would work “much better” to help stop illegal immigration than a wall or steel slats. When asked by Berman if she thinks Trump is making up his claim, Spier said she thinks he “makes Continue reading "Rep. Rep. Brooks Clashes With CNN’s Berman: ‘Don’t Make Up Stuff and Try to Mislead the Public’

Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) clashed with CNN’s John Berman during a lengthy interview Friday morning over the president’s demand for a border wall and threat to declare a national emergency to circumvent Congress and fund it. Berman kicked off the interview by confronting Brooks with his 2015 comments bashing then-president Obama for using executive authority to buck Congress. “Why does it appear you have one set of rules for President Obama, and another for President Trump?” Berman asked. Brooks responded with a testy ad hominem: “Well John, once again you guys at CNN are misleading the public.” The Alabama Republican argued the circumstances are different, stating there is a “national emergency of major proportions” at the border. “So if you want to talk apples and apples, let’s do it, but don’t make up stuff and try to mislead the public,” Brooks added. “What’s the emergency?” Berman pressed. Rep. Ruben Gallego sat down with CNN’s John Berman to talk about a six-page letter sent by House Republicans expressing concern over the “thoroughness and impartiality” of both the Russian probe and the investigation of Hillary Clinton‘s emails. “On their way out the door, as part of this six-page letter, one of the main points is they still think there should be an additional special counsel brought on to investigate James Comey‘s investigation of Hillary Clinton. What’s your reaction?” Berman asked the Democratic lawmaker. “This is just pure obsession by these Republicans,” Gallego replied. “Hillary Clinton is no longer a presidential candidate. The president is Donald Trump. He has clearly done some levels of violation that should be investigated. They need to get over it. Hillary Clinton is not your president.” He added: “She’s not the person that should be investigated. The collusion, the crimes that Continue reading "Dem Rep Slams House GOP’s Renewed Talk of Hillary Clinton Email Investigation: ‘Just Pure Obsession’"

CNN’s Berman: GOP Staffer Told Me Mattis Departure ‘Makes Impeachment More Likely’

CNN’s John Berman says he has spoken to people in the GOP who think President Trump‘s impeachment is more likely now that James Mattis is leaving the White House. The Defense Secretary’s departure sent shockwaves throughout the political world on Thursday, especially since his resignation letter was a thorough rebuke of Trump’s approach to military and foreign policy. As CNN’s New Day examined the connotations of these developments, Berman said Mitch McConnell basically said “holy crap” when the Senate Majority Leader announced his distress over Mattis’ leave-taking. “I have to say what the political ramifications are,” Berman said. “I heard from a Republican staffer on the Hill who said this makes impeachment more likely. I don’t need to tie this into the Russian investigation right now…but the ripple effects of this are that Republicans are shaken and their support for the president is shaken and that might be an Continue reading "CNN’s Berman: GOP Staffer Told Me Mattis Departure ‘Makes Impeachment More Likely’"

DNC Chair Tom Perez on Dem Controlled House: I’m Sure We’ll Expect Hearings Into Trump

Tuesday night’s midterm election results saw the Democratic party take control of the House of Representatives.  What does this mean for the checks and balances of power in Washington D.C.? Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez outlined the Democratic agenda for the next two years and revealed that he was “sure we’ll expect” hearings into President Donald Trump. During a Wednesday morning post-election visit with CNN morning host John Berman, Perez first listed a number of issues House Democrats will want to tackle including health care, an infrastructure bill and investing in public education. But when asked about how oversight of the executive branch, Perez noted that the one-party control in the nation’s capital has meant there has been no checks and balances, calling oversight of the Executive Branch a constitutional duty. “I am sure we will expect hearings because we have a constitutional duty of oversight in Continue reading "DNC Chair Tom Perez on Dem Controlled House: I’m Sure We’ll Expect Hearings Into Trump"

CNN’s New Day Says New Trump Ad Smacks of Willie Horton: ‘Roger Ailes Haunts Our Politics Still’

CNN’s New Day condemned President Donald Trump‘s latest campaign video, posted to Twitter, which imagines an invasion of Central American migrants intent on bringing violent crime to the United States. On Thursday, New Day host Alisyn Camerota pointed out the video is reminiscent of the Willie Horton ad run by George H.W. Bush‘s 1988 campaign — and ad for which former Fox News chief Roger Ailes was an adviser. “Roger Ailes casts a long shadow still,” Camerota said. “Roger Ailes has died, but he was the mastermind behind Willy Horton and his acolytes are in the White House, and here we are again.” “It’s Halloween and the Day of the Dead, and the ghost of Roger Ailes haunts our politics still,” CNN senior political analyst John Avlon said. “Positive polarization being that play that he infused the Republican Party with and his own network with.” Continue reading "CNN’s New Day Says New Trump Ad Smacks of Willie Horton: ‘Roger Ailes Haunts Our Politics Still’"

OUTLOOK: With 7 days to go, Democrats are in a good position to reshape the gubernatorial landscape and gain the majority of governorships up for grabs; a 4-point drop in Gallup’s weekly President Donald Trump job approval poll has some Republicans worried about the election as a referendum on the president; Latino enthusiasm is shaping up to be key factor for Democrats in Republican-held House districts and how Trump’s behavior in the wake of last Saturday’s massacre at a Pittsburgh synagogue may impact voters. Larry Sabato at the University of Virginia Center for Politics noted a handful of changes regarding governor races across the country, moving Kansas and South Dakota from Lean Republican to Toss up; Oregon from Lean Democrat to Toss up; and Continue reading "Trump ‘Driving Enthusiasm’ Through Fear: Here’s What Pundits Are Saying About the Election, 1 Week Out"
