CBS News anchor Margaret Brennan got Donald Trump to reverse himself in record time when Trump trashed the Bush administration over Iraq intelligence, only to profess trust, seconds later, in current National Security Advisor John Bolton, a Bush administration official who was a strong supporter of the Iraq War. On Sunday’s edition of Face the Nation, Brennan played clips from her pre-Super Bowl interview of Trump, including an exchange in which she deftly called Trump out for trashing his own intelligence community by comparing them to the administration of former President George W. Bush. After an extended back-and-forth over Trump’s disagreements with his own intelligence community, Brennan tried to button up a key fact. “I want to move on here but I should say your intel chiefs do say Iran’s abiding by that nuclear deal,” Brennan said. “I know you think it’s a bad deal, but..” “I Continue reading "Margaret Brennan Busts Trump After He Trashes Bush Admin: Do You Trust John Bolton?"

Just last month, President Donald Trump abruptly announced the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria, enraging lawmakers on both sides of the aisle and prompting the resignation of his Defense Secretary James Mattis. Now, just a few weeks later, the administration appears to be backpedalling on that announcement. According to the Associated Press, Trump national security adviser John Bolton told reporters Sunday that there are two conditions for a military withdrawal of the 2,000 U.S. troops from Syria: defeating the remnants of ISIS and protecting the Kurdish fighters who have fought the terrorist group alongside the U.S. (This is curious, because when Trump announced the Syria withdrawal, he repeatedly declared that ISIS was “defeated”.) Back to Bolton. Per AP, he spoke to reporters in Jerusalem: “There are objectives that we want to accomplish that condition the withdrawal… The timetable flows from the policy decisions that Continue reading "BREAKING: John Bolton Now Says There Are ‘Conditions’ For Withdrawal of Troops From Syria"

The Wall Street Journal issued a correction on Tuesday to a report that a top national security staffer was fired and escorted from the White House, after the White House denied it. But it appears the staffer is still getting the axe. “White House Deputy National Security Adviser Mira Ricardel is expected to be fired,” the correction read. Earlier Tuesday, First Lady Melania Trump issued a stunning statement that apparently called for the ouster of Ricardel. “It is the position of the Office of the First Lady that [Ricardel] no longer deserves the honor of serving in this White House,” Melania Trump’s spokeswomen Stephanie Grisham said when asked about rumors of tensions between John Bolton‘s deputy and the first lady. Moments later, the Wall Street Journal reported that Ricardel had been fired and escorted from the White House. “Ricardel was fired after clash with first lady,” an anonymous official

New details are emerging about a blow up between top Trump administration officials over immigration on the southern border, as a caravan of Honduran immigrants makes its way north and border crossings are on the rise. It was reported on Thursday that White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and National Security Adviser John Bolton got into a shouting match during an Oval Office discussion on the increase in border crossings. NBC News is now reporting that the fight was sparked by Bolton’s criticisms of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, included multiple F-bombs, and ended with Kelly storming out of the White House for the day. The argument was borne out of a dispute in how to handle the rising number of border crossings, leading to “an angry, profanity-laced exchange” between Bolton and Kelly. “During a meeting Thursday about the issue, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was explaining an Continue reading "Details Revealed From Bolton and Kelly’s Profane Fight Over Shutting Down Border: ‘I’m F*cking Out of Here’"

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders disputed a Bloomberg report claiming that Chief of Staff John Kelly and National Security Adviser John Bolton were locked in an intense shouting match outside the Oval Office. Earlier today, Bloomberg reported this:
The chief of staff, John Kelly, and the national security adviser, John Bolton, fought over immigration and border crossings, including the performance of the Homeland Security Department under Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, one person familiar with the matter said. She was at the White House for meetings on Thursday, but the people disagreed about whether she witnessed the argument. Bolton criticized DHS, and Kelly defended Nielsen, a former deputy whom he supported to replace him at the department. Two people described the exchange as less a shouting match than an intense argument. Kelly then stormed away, so upset that he uttered some profanities.
The report also suggested the fight was so intense, Continue reading "Sarah Sanders Disputes Report of Bolton, Kelly Shouting Match: We are Passionate, Not Angry"

President Donald Trump‘s national security adviser John Bolton went after Iran in a fiery speech on Tuesday. “We are watching and we will come after you,” Bolton said while speaking at the United Against Nuclear Iran summit in New York City. Bolton, who said Iranian officials call America “the Great Satan,” also informed the European Union that “enforcement of our sanctions is aggressive and unwavering.” “We do not intend for our sanctions to be abated by Europe or anybody else,” he added. In another warning to Iran, Bolton said, “So, I might imagine they would take me seriously when I assure them today: If you cross us, our allies, or our partners; if you harm our citizens; if you continue to lie, cheat, and deceive, yes, there will indeed be hell to pay.” The comments come just after Bolton assured the world that America is not Continue reading "John Bolton Warns Iran ‘There Will Be Hell to Pay’ in Fiery Speech: ‘We Will Come After You’"

National Security Advisor John Bolton delivered his expected condemnation of the International Criminal Court on Monday, vowing to bring sanctions against the organization if it continues to investigate American activity in the Middle East. As Bolton spoke before the Federalist Society, he promised retaliation for the ICC’s “unjust prosecution” of alleged war crimes committed by U.S. forces in Afghanistan. He called the organization a threat to American national security, saying it “claims authority separate from, and above, the Constitution of the United States. It is antithetical to our nation’s ideals.” “We will not cooperate with the ICC. We will provide no assistance to the ICC. We will not join the ICC,” said Bolton. “We will let the ICC die on its own. After all, for all intents and purposes, the ICC is already dead to us.” The speech continued with Bolton describing the ICC as an “illegitimate” Continue reading "John Bolton Threatens Sanctions for ‘Illegitimate’ International Criminal Court: ‘Already Dead to Us’"

This morning, National Security Advisor John Bolton met with his Russian counterpart Nikolai Patrushev, and among many important pieces of information released to the press, there were two particularly revealing moments. Bolton held his presser separately from Patrushev because, he told reporters, because of a disagreement over what to talk about. “We might have had a joint statement,” he said. “But I felt it was important to mention election meddling, which was raised a number of times during these consultations today which lasted a little bit over five hours, but we weren’t able to reach agreement on that so we decided to go ahead and we’ll each speak individually.” That is not to say the issue of election meddling being brought up during their discussion became the sticking point, but rather that they couldn’t agree on whether to bring up election meddling during a press statement. Bolton wanted Continue reading "John Bolton Says Russia Refused Joint Statement Over Disagreements on Election Meddling"

At Geneva Presser, BBC Reporter Asks National Security Advisor John Bolton if Donald Trump Is a Security Risk

On Thursday, National Security Advisor John Bolton spoke with reporters after meeting in Geneva with Russian National Security Council Director Nikolai Patrushev. The two men did not hold a joint press conference because they could not reach an agreement on election meddling. During Bolton’s solitary presser, he took several questions on the topic at hand. But the last question, from BBC’s Imogen Foulkes, was more provocative than substantive. “It’s not been an easy week for your president,” Foulkes began. “I’m just wondering as National Security Advisor whether you were told, given the events of this week and admissions of payoffs and you mentioned election meddling, whether you’re ever concerned that your own President is a security risk.” “Of course not, I mean that’s a silly question,” said Bolton. “I just spoke to him literally a few minutes ago and we have performed here in exactly the way I Continue reading "At Geneva Presser, BBC Reporter Asks National Security Advisor John Bolton if Donald Trump Is a Security Risk"

John Bolton Suggests Brennan Probably Used Classified Info to Bash Trump

In a pre-recorded interview aired on This Week this morning, National Security Advisor John Bolton said he wasn’t saying for sure that former CIA Director John Brennan used and politicized classified intel to bash Donald Trump, he was not not saying that either. ABC’s Martha Raddatz said to Bolton that the president “cited his authority to protect the nation’s classified information as a reason, and also refereed to Brennan’s — what he called erratic behavior, wilder outbursts on the Internet and television,” in offering a reason for revoking Brennan’s clearance. “Brennan has been a strong critic of the administration,” said Raddat. “But what does this have to do with protecting classified information?” Bolton cited Senator Richard Burr’s remarks, also referenced by Brennan himself earlier on Meet the Press, and agreed that Brennan’s behavior both while at the CIA and after showed someone who was politicizing intelligence. “I Continue reading "John Bolton Suggests Brennan Probably Used Classified Info to Bash Trump"

Fox & Friends’ Steve Doocy cut right to the chase with National Security Advisor John Bolton Tuesday — asking him if Russian President Vladimir Putin lied to President Donald Trump‘s face when he said that Russia didn’t interfere in the election. “I don’t think there is any question that the Russian state is involved and that’s why the President wanted the four heads of some of the key agencies involved in detecting and preventing foreign election meddling to go out and tell the American people exactly what they’re doing,” Bolton said. “Now, they couldn’t tell them everything because obviously you’re not going to tell our adversaries what we are doing so they can evade it, but certainly in general terms so that people could have faith that the government is protecting the integrity of the election process.” “The President knew what they were going to say because he Continue reading "Fox & Friends’ Steve Doocy Asks John Bolton: Did Putin Lie to Trump About Election Meddling?"

Jake Tapper Grills Bolton: Why Can’t Trump Denounce Russian Election Meddling as Seriously as You?

CNN’s Jake Tapper pressed National Security Advisor John Bolton on Monday over President Trump‘s reluctance to condemn Russia’s election interference the way top U.S. intelligence and security officials do. As Tapper asked about how the White House is dealing with the latest news on Iran, he eventually brought up the recent press briefing ensemble where Bolton and his colleagues warned that Russia still threatens democratic institutions. Since Trump has never been able to condemn Russia to such a degree, Tapper cut to the chase and asked Bolton “why not? Why can’t President Trump condemn Russian election interference with the same vociferousness that you’re able to?” “That’s simply inaccurate,” said Bolton, who insisted that Trump recognizes Russia’s actions and wants to stop it from happening again in the future. Bolton continued to say that he and his colleagues had their recent ensemble because Trump wanted them to tell Continue reading "Jake Tapper Grills Bolton: Why Can’t Trump Denounce Russian Election Meddling as Seriously as You?"

Chris Wallace Pushes John Bolton on Trump’s Media Attacks: ‘What Wars Have We Started?’

Fox News’ Chris Wallace pressed National Security Adviser John Bolton to explain President Donald Trump‘s accusation that the press was capable of inciting violent conflict, finding his rhetoric to be over-the-top. “What wars have we started?” Wallace asked during an interview Sunday. “I think the issue of press bias has been around for a long, long time,” Bolton said, giving an indirect response to the question at hand. “As a boy, I supported Barry Goldwater in 1964. I thought the press was biased against him. I don’t think it’s changed much since then.” Wallace agreed there were problems of accuracy in the media, but he felt Trump’s tweet earlier in the day calling journalists sick and divisive was a step too far. “That’s the president’s view based on the attacks that the media have made on him,” Bolton said, avoiding any rejection of Trump’s hate-mongering statements. “There Continue reading "Chris Wallace Pushes John Bolton on Trump’s Media Attacks: ‘What Wars Have We Started?’"

White House national security adviser John Bolton says they’re scrapping plans to hold another meeting Russia in the foreseeable future. There was a lot of buzz on Tuesday after Russian officials spoke to the media and apparently rejected President Donald Trump‘s offer to hold another meeting with Vladimir Putin as a follow-up to Helsinki. As it were, Bolton just told reporters that Trump and Putin won’t meet one on one until next year, by which point, the president suspects that the “Russia witch hunt” will be history.

John Bolton: It’s ‘Hard to Believe’ Putin Was Unaware of Russian Election Meddling

National Security Advisor John Bolton says it is “hard to believe” that Russian President Vladimir Putin was unaware of Russian meddling in the 2016 election. During an interview with ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl Sunday on This Week, Bolton was asked by Karl about Putin’s knowledge of the meddling. Bolton replied by noting that when he spoke with Putin in preparation for the summit in June, the Russian president “made it plain that he said the Russian state was not involved.” Karl then asked the NSA head if there was any way “we could have 12 officials, some of them quite senior in Russian military intelligence, carry out an operation to undermine a U.S. presidential election and Putin himself would not know?” “I find it hard to believe,” Bolton replied. “But that’s what one of the purposes of this meeting is, so the president can see Continue reading "John Bolton: It’s ‘Hard to Believe’ Putin Was Unaware of Russian Election Meddling"

During a lengthy interview previewing the Russia summit and addressing the special counsel indictments, ABC News’ Jon Karl took a moment to ask John Bolton about the White House’s war with CNN. The White House national security advisor was supposed to be on with Jake Tapper this morning, but after that confrontation between Trump and Jim Acosta at the President’s UK press conference, the White House yanked Bolton from CNN. (Tapper told his audience this morning that Bolton was “prepared to do the interview.”) On This Week today, Karl first asked Bolton about Trump’s attacks on the press in general and how it contributes to the environment wherein dictators like Putin actually repress free speech. Bolton responded, “I think the question’s silly.” Karl then brought up the CNN kerfuffle and asked, “Is it really appropriate to deny a news organization access to a White House official because a Continue reading "ABC’s Jon Karl Confronts Bolton Over White House Pulling His CNN Interview: Is That Appropriate?"
