Appearing on CNN’s Reliable Sources on Sunday, journalist Katie Couric and host Brian Stelter discussed the ousting of Les Moonves from CBS and the general media landscape as it pertains to women and the one year anniversary of the start of the #MeToo movement. Couric lamented the fact that the news divisions of the broadcast giants, and every cable news network, are all run by men. But are they? Couric said she never saw or knew about any disturbing behavior from her former news partner Matt Lauer, who was fired in #MeToo moment over alleged sexual harassment, but that she did notice the bad culture at CBS News. “CBS news, I think, it’s clear from Ronan Farrow’s excellent reporting that they have a real culture problem there,” she said. “The culture I found at 60 Minutes personally was very challenging and at times quite offensive, because I think Continue reading "Katie Couric Says Hierarchy at Every Major News Network is Male, Misses Major Exception: Fox News"

Ousted CBS chief Les Moonves was scrubbed from the Hollywood Reporter‘s Top 100 Most Powerful list — and replaced by Ronan Farrow, the reporter whose investigation into his alleged sexual misconduct precipitated his downfall. CNN’s Oliver Darcy reported Thursday that Moonves was initially slated to be in the top 10 of the magazine’s list of the most powerful people in entertainment, until the allegations against him — which include sexual assault — were revealed. Matthew Belloni, the Hollywood Reporter‘s editorial director, told CNN that after Moonves’ departure from CBS he met with his editors and they swiftly dumped the once powerful executive from the list. “That one was easy for us,” Belloni told CNN. “He’s out of the business. He’s no longer in his role and this list is all about power and the ability to green light things and influence the culture and he’s no Continue reading "Les Moonves Booted From Hollywood’s Most Powerful List… And Replaced By Ronan Farrow"

A new report indicates that Julie Chen is about to walk away from her co-hosting gig on The Talk in light of the allegations against her husband, recently-ousted CBS chief Les Moonves. According to CNN’s Brian Stelter, Chen will deliver a video message tomorrow to confirm her departure from CBS’s midday roundtable show. “She has decided that her main focus needs to be clearing her husband’s name from accusations made 25-30 years ago and tending to her son,” a source told CNN. Chen’s absence from The Talk has been noteworthy in the last few days since Moonves, her husband, was recently ousted as chief of CBS amid roughly a dozen sexual harassment accusations. Chen has Continue reading "Julie Chen Reportedly Leaving The Talk Amid Les Moonves Misconduct Allegations"

Joy Behar: Julie Chen Can’t Return to The Talk Until She ‘Comes Clean’ on Husband Les Moonves

Joy Behar doesn’t see how Julie Chen can possibly return to The Talk on CBS unless she “comes clean” on the troubles surrounding her husband, recently ousted CBS chief Les Moonves. The View on Friday discussed how Chen surprised viewers last night by closing out the latest episode of Big Brother by calling herself “Julie Chen-Moonves.” Since this was unusual on Chen’s part, the View panel took it as a sign that she’s standing with her husband despite the fact that he was recently ousted over an increasing number of sexual misconduct allegations. With Chen having been absent from The Talk over the last few days, Behar believes it’s “going to be hard” for her to come back if she cannot acknowledge something as prominent as the #MeToo movement without saying she’s part of it. “What topics can they do?” Behar asked. “They can’t talk about anything related Continue reading "Joy Behar: Julie Chen Can’t Return to The Talk Until She ‘Comes Clean’ on Husband Les Moonves"

Hosting tonight’s Big Brother, Julie Chen closed out with a pretty subtle statement about her husband, Les Moonves. Moonves was the CEO of CBS until this week, when he was fired following a second New Yorker report containing some serious allegations of sexual misconduct. Moonves’ departure was followed by the firing of 60 Minutes executive producer Jeff Fager after he sent a disturbing text to a CBS News correspondent reaching out to him for comment. Chen is still at CBS as co-host of The Talk and host of Big Brother, and tonight was her first appearance on the network since his firing. And at the end of tonight’s Big Brother, this was her sign-off:
“I’m Julie Chen Moonves, goodnight.”
It may have been a subtle show of support for her husband from Chen, who put out a statement weeks ago after the first New Yorker report Continue reading "Julie Chen Closes Out Latest Big Brother by Saying ‘I’m Julie Chen Moonves, Goodnight’"

CBS News is under intense scrutiny this week following the ousting of both CEO Les Moonves and 60 Minutes executive producer Jeff Fager, and there’s new reporting from The New York Times tonight on the circumstances of how both ended up being booted. The Times‘ deep dive into what was going on behind the scenes reveals that Moonves was actually trying to keep one woman from speaking out by trying to get her a job:
A few days later, as part of the company’s investigation, the newly-hired lawyers asked to interview Mr. Moonves. He initially resisted, but relented after CBS warned that he was contractually obligated to cooperate fully in any investigation. If he didn’t, he could be fired for “cause” and would forfeit any severance payment. With his own lawyers also present, Mr. Moonves discussed the Los Angeles police complaint, which he’d known about since November. CBS News president David Rhodes just sent out a statement announcing 60 Minutes executive producer Jeff Fager is leaving the network “effective immediately.” The news comes days after CBS CEO Les Moonves stepped down from the network amid an increasing number of sexual misconduct accusations, as revealed in a new report by Ronan Farrow. Fager was also under scrutiny, having been hit in The New Yorker with allegations of inappropriately touching women and creating a sexist work environment. In Rhodes’ memo, he said “Bill Owens will manage the 60 Minutes team as Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews and I begin the search for a new executive producer of the program.” He also insisted that Fager’s departure “is not directly related to the allegations surfaced in press reports, which continue to be investigated independently. However, he violated company policy and it is our commitment to uphold those policies at every

Report: Les Moonves Accidentally Received CBS Board Email on Findings From Investigation

As Les Moonves steps down from CBS over multiple accusations of sexual misconduct, a new report suggests the network’s board members accidentally informed him of the investigations into his actions back in mid-August. Wall Street Journal reports that CBS has been dealing with a lot of corporate infighting over the last few months, which made it difficult for the network to take the allegations against Moonves seriously. Moonves has been under investigation since July, when he was first accused of harassment by six women who spoke to Ronan Farrow. The article states that while the probe was underway, Moonves was “accidentally copied on an email to the entire CBS board detailing damaging findings in the law firms’ investigations and discussing how to proceed should he need to be put on leave.” Now that Moonves is leaving the company, it remains to be seen what sort of exit package he Continue reading "Report: Les Moonves Accidentally Received CBS Board Email on Findings From Investigation"

Today news broke that CEO of CBS Les Mooves is out over the latest sexual misconduct allegations, and on the network’s The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert went after him first thing in his opening monologue. First, the show opened with a fake announcement that Undercover Boss with Les Moonves would not be airing, and then Colbert went in. “As you may have heard, the head of this network, Leslie Moonves, was forced to step down yesterday,” he began. “This came after a second Ronan Farrow exposé featured more women accusing him of sexual harassment and assault. It’s never a good sign when you’re the subject of a Ronan Farrow double dip.” Colbert read aloud one of the allegations, went for the joke (watch the clip above), and then pointed out that Mooves has been accused of harassing or assaulting 13 women. “The article is extremley disturbing, and Continue reading "Colbert Rips Former Boss Les Moonves on The Late Show: ‘Extremely Disturbing and I’m Not Surprised’"

CBS show The Talk took an awkward and emotional turn on Monday as the show addressed Les Moonves‘ ouster from the network in the Season 9 premiere. Julie Chen was absent from the show, having released a statement saying she’s taking time off to be with her family. This comes after Moonves, Chen’s husband, departed CBS after six more women spoke to Ronan Farrow and accused the ex-network chief of sexual misconduct. Sharron Osbourne led the show with this news, saying “it’s very embarrassing and upsetting to have to talk about her husband, but we do, we feel its right.” Osbourne appeared shaken by the new wave of allegations against Moonves, particularly as she recalled how she was asked to defend Moonves months ago despite only knowing him on a “superficial” level. “Obviously the man has a problem,” Osbourne said. “After more women have come out these stories Continue reading "Hosts of The Talk (Minus Julie Chen) Take on Les Moonves After CBS Ouster: ‘Obviously the Man Has a Problem’"

Les Moonves is about to step down from his role at the head of CBS, according to a CNN report on Sunday afternoon. He will also reportedly leave without a severance package. The first reports of Moonves expected departure came just hours after The New Yorker‘s Ronan Farrow published yet another damaging report detailing accusations made by six more women against Moonves. Farrow reported in the early morning bombshell:
As the negotiations continue and shareholders and advocacy groups accuse the board of failing to hold Moonves accountable, new allegations are emerging. Six additional women are now accusing Moonves of sexual harassment or assault in incidents that took place between the nineteen-eighties and the early aughts. They include claims that Moonves forced them to perform oral sex on him, that he exposed himself to them without their consent, and that he used physical violence and intimidation against them. As CBS C.E.O. Les Moonves reportedly prepares to exit the company, six additional women have launched a fresh series of allegations against the executive, adding to mounting claims that his pattern of sexual misconduct was swept under the rug for years. The new accounts, broken by The New Yorker‘s Ronan Farrow, include both sexual harassment and assault between the 1980s and the early 2000s. Among the claims are stories “that Moonves forced them to perform oral sex on him, that he exposed himself to them without their consent, and that he used physical violence and intimidation against them,” Farrow writes. One of the women who has stepped forward, longtime TV executive Phyllis Golden-Gottlieb, said she made a criminal complaint to Los Angeles police last year, accusing the C.E.O. “of physically restraining her and forcing her to perform oral sex on him, and of exposing Continue reading "WATCH: Ronan Farrow Reports More Women Accuse Les Moonves of Sex Crimes and Violence"

CBS chief executive Les Moonves was reportedly so enraged by Janet Jackson‘s Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction that he tried to destroy her career. According to the HuffPo, the whole thing was over that unfortunate moment when Justin Timberlake tore a piece of fabric from Jackson’s costume exposing a bit too much to a worldwide audience in 2004. HuffPo reports:
Jackson became a years-long fixation for Moonves after the so-called “wardrobe malfunction” of 2004, when her breast was exposed for nine-sixteenths of a second after Justin Timberlake tore a piece of fabric off her bustier during their Super Bowl halftime performance. CBS and MTV (a subsidiary of Viacom, the parent company of CBS at the time), which produced the halftime show, faced a torrent of criticism and a $550,000 Federal Communications Commission fine.
Both Jackson and Timberlake said it was an accident, but apparently, Moonves didn’t believe the Continue reading "CBS Chief Les Moonves Had Janet Jackson Blackballed After Super Bowl Wardrobe Malfunction, Per New Report"

The board of CBS Corporation has reportedly had enough of embattled CEO Les Moonves, and is negotiating a massive exit package in an effort to oust him from the company. According to CNBC, the CBS board is offering Moonves — who has been accused of sexual harassment by six womenan exit package of approximately $100 million to entice the executive to walk away. Under that arrangement, Moonves, remarkably, would be forfeiting approximately $80 million in compensation which he would reportedly be owed as part of a severance package and a production deal. The accusations against Moonves were made public as part of a bombshell report in the New Yorker written by Ronan Farrow on July 27. In a statement published by the New Yorker, Moonves said, “I recognize that there were times decades ago when I may have made some women uncomfortable by making advances. CBS CEO Les Moonves has been suspended from the Board of Councilors of The University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. The suspension comes after a New Yorker report detailing sexual misconduct allegations by six women was published last week. “The USC School of Cinematic Arts has suspended Les Moonves from its Board of Councilors,” the statement, obtained by The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday, read. “The School takes the recent allegations very seriously and will discuss further action when the Board convenes in October.” The decision follows CBS’ own decision to select outside counsel to conduct an independent investigation into the matter but allow Moonves to remain on the job for the time being. The fallout was also not only limited to the university’s Cinematic Arts program. In addition to being stripped of his board role for now, the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at The University Continue reading "Les Moonves Suspended From Board of USC’s School of Cinematic Arts"
