FBI agent Peter Strzok — the subject of much ire from President Donald Trump and many on the right in recent months after his anti-Trump texts were made public — was fired from the Bureau on Monday. Now, his lawyer is speaking out — and he claims that his client’s firing was pure politics. Appearing on MTP Daily Monday, Strzok attorney Aitan Goelman denounced his client’s dismissal from the FBI. “I don’t think that you can rationally reach any conclusion other than it was political,” Goelman said. He added, “It’s difficult to believe — given the steady drum beat of texts demonizing Pete from the president and all the calls on Capitol Hill by Republicans for Pete to be fired — that that didn’t play a role in the Bureau’s ultimate decision.” Goelman doesn’t consider Strzok’s ouster to be the end result of a covert mission to fire the Continue reading "Peter Strzok’s Lawyer Speaks Out After Client Gets Sacked By FBI: No Doubt Firing Was ‘Political’"
Chuck Todd has little patience for what he terms President Donald Trump‘s “smear campaign” against the FBI. But the MSNBC anchor seems to have even less patience for, as he sees it, the Republican party’s enabling of that smear campaign. Wednesday on MTP: Daily, Todd sounded off on the GOP — or, at least, many in the GOP — for anti-FBI rhetoric. “That kind of smear campaign against the FBI leadership and that kind of willingness to embrace the president’s conspiracy theories has gone off the rails,” Todd said. “And it has gone off the rails with the help of elected Republicans who I think we all thought should know better.” Todd went on to note that he finds the anti-FBI chatter hypocritical, considering it seems to run counter to some longtime Republican values. “The president is facing serious allegations that he tried to corrupt this investigation,” Continue reading "Chuck Todd: GOP Has ‘Gone Off the Rails’ By Supporting Trump’s FBI ‘Conspiracy Theories’"
On Friday’s MTP Daily, Chuck Todd took a deep dive into Donald Trump’s past behavior in the wake of his controversial remarks, where the president talked about “shithole countries” during an Oval Office meeting Thursday. “What are the consequences of having a president who is viewed by many as openly racist?” Todd asked. “What are the consequences of having a Republican party that to some appears to be empowering him with its silence? Folks, you can debate all you want about the President’s recent language, but you cannot debate what it seemingly reveals about his core beliefs — that white Europeans are good and brown immigrants are bad.” He emphasized the issue here isn’t about the profanity, but about the view many hold that “this president sees everything through a racial prism and may even have his own racist beliefs.” Todd then gave a run down of Continue reading "Chuck Todd: Trump Thinks ‘White Europeans Are Good and Brown Immigrants Are Bad’"
At the Wednesday White House ceremony in which Republicans took a victory lap after their tax plan passed in both the House and the Senate, party leaders couldn’t have been more over-the-top in their praise of President Donald Trump. Chuck Todd was perplexed as to why. Wednesday on MTP: Daily, Todd was shocked at the platitudes lobbed towards Trump so soon after his endorsement of Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore set off a major squabble among many in the party. “We’re a week removed from the president dividing the party disgustingly in half, at times, over Roy Moore,” Todd said. “And yet, the words that were used to describe this president by Republicans were –‘Extraordinary.’ ‘Exquisite.’ ‘A miracle.’ ‘One heck of a leader.'” The MTP: Daily host added, “Wow. I am surprised how much they all — they didn’t just hug the president. They went Continue reading "Chuck Todd: Surprising That the GOP’s ‘All In’ on Praising Trump So Soon After Roy Moore Fracas"
Have we reached the era of post-morality politics? That was the question posed on the chyron during MTP: Daily on Wednesday. Katy Tur, filling in for Chuck Todd, declared that question to be very much open in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations against major figures from both parties. More than the scandals themselves, though, Tur went after those who turned a blind eye to protect a fellow party member in spite of their alleged actions. “When does character matter more than your party affiliation?” Tur said. “It’s starting to feel like the answer is never. And in an era of post-truth, when will we reach a level of post-morality politics? It’s starting to feel as if we may be getting closer to that.” Most notably, of course, Tur was referring to President Donald Trump — who all but endorsed Republican Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore Continue reading "Katy Tur Blasts Trump For Backing Moore: Starting to Feel Like the Era of ‘Post-Morality Politics’"
Corey Lewandowski stopped by MTP: Daily for a discussion with Chuck Todd on the latest in special counsel Robert Mueller‘s probe. And things got pretty heated. In an interview taped on Tuesday which aired Wednesday, President Donald Trump‘s former campaign manager was asked by Todd if he believes that the Russians interfered with the 2016 election. “I’m very concerned… the Russians tried to influence the election through Hillary Clinton,” Lewandowski said — referencing the Clinton campaign’s funding of opposition research against Trump. Todd pushed back. “I know you’re trying to twist this around… I’m talking about everything we’ve learned,” Todd said. “John Podesta‘s e-mails and the things that came out of there. The DNC hack. Do you acknowledge that the Russians were trying everything they could to defeat Hillary Clinton?” Lewandowski said he didn’t think that was the case at all. “Why would the Continue reading "Lewandowski Denies Collusion in Clash With Chuck Todd: ‘I Don’t Know Anything About Russia, Okay?’"
What does it mean to be a Republican in 2017? It’s a question that’s been much talked about following the release of Arizona Senator Jeff Flake‘s book criticizing the party, which he believes has “lost its way.” And it’s a question that Congressman Charlie Dent (R-PA) appears to be openly grappling with, to some degree. Friday, the Pennsylvania Congressman appeared on MTP: Daily with Chuck Todd. And he said that Republicans are currently judged, by some in the party, by the degree to which they show fealty to President Donald Trump. “It really comes down to ‘How loyal are you to the president?’ And that’s how you’re being judged,” Dent said. “So if you have a more nuanced position, some will consider you an infidel or a traitor.” Dent, as the interview concluded, sounded like a man who is open to reconsidering his party affiliation. “I Continue reading "GOP Congressman Charlie Dent: If You’re Not Loyal to Trump, Some Republicans Consider You an ‘Infidel’"
