President Donald Trump continued the false narrative surrounding controversial comments made by Governor Ralph Northam, falsely asserting that “executing” a newborn baby is an option being suggested by advocates of controversial bills addressing late-term abortions. During a “Finish the Wall” themed political rally in El Paso, Texas, President Trump reviewed many of the hot-button political issues of the day to a crowd of adoring supporters. “Democrats are also pushing extreme late-term abortion” Trump introduced the segment to lustful boos. He then detailed what Northam said in a manner that can only be described as purposefully misleading. “So in Virginia, the governor…. stated that he would even allow a newborn baby to come out into the world, and wrap the baby, make the baby comfortable, and then talk to the mother & talk to the father and then execute the baby. Execute the baby!” Northam’s comments on the radio program Continue reading "Trump Falsely Claims Gov. Ralph Northam Called to ‘Execute the Baby!’"

President Donald Trump mocked Virginia Governor Ralph Northam at his rally in El Paso tonight. He brought up Northam in talking about the extreme positions Democrats are taking on abortion, and the president ended up riffing on the governor’s blackface scandal. “I like him,” Trump said. “Keeps us out of the papers. I’d like to find a few more guys like this one.” He even brought up Northam’s bonkers press conference and cried, “He almost moonwalked!” You can watch above, via Fox News. [image via screengrab]

Gayle King Corrects Gov. Northam About ‘Indentured Servants’: ‘Also Known as Slavery’

In her interview over the weekend with Ralph Northam, CBS’ Gayle King pushed back on the Virginia governor when he used the term “indentured servants” as a euphemism for slavery. Northam told King he has no intention of resigning from his job despite the ongoing controversy of his KKK and blackface yearbook photo. As Northam defended himself by saying he could still lead the state through the healing process, he started to talk about Virginia’s history with race. “We are now at the 400-year anniversary — just 90 miles from here in 1619. The first indentured servants from Africa landed on our shores in Old Point Comfort, what we call now Fort Monroe…,” Northam said. “Also known as slavery,” King interjected. “Yes,” Northam agreed. Typically, indentured servitude is thought of as a system in which someone enters into a voluntary labor agreement to pay off a debt to somebody Continue reading "Gayle King Corrects Gov. SNL’s Weekend Update Takes on Virginia Blackface Scandals, Gucci Sweaters and Liam Neeson

On Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update, both Michael Che and Colin Jost weighed in on the various race scandals that blew up over the last couple of weeks, to pretty devastatingly hilarious effect. “First the governor of Virginia admitted to wearing blackface in college for a Michael Jackson costume — by the way making it the least accurate Michael Jackson costume possible,” said Che to introduce the bit. “That would be crazy enough but then the attorney general was like ‘You too? Blackface is my jam!’ And then Liam Neeson was like, ‘Blackface! hold my beer.'” After Jost showed the Northam photo, he said he knew the picture was from a yearbook but “didn’t know the year was 1870.” Jost also brought up the other scandals, including the sexual assault allegations against Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, and said “maybe Virginia should take a cue Continue reading "SNL’s Weekend Update Takes on Virginia Blackface Scandals, Gucci Sweaters and Liam Neeson"

CNN’s State of the Union Blows Up Over Northam and Racism: ‘This is Not About President Donald Trump!’

A debate over the controversies engulfing Virginia’s leadership got contentious on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday, after a guest brought up President Donald Trump. The discussion centered on Gov. Ralph Northam‘s blackface scandal, but also touched on Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring‘s blackface admission and the two sexual assault allegations against Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax. As the panel condemned Northam’s attempts to make amends and remain in office, former Democratic Rep. Nanette Barragán said Trump “has been one of the most divisive presidents, and frankly, racist himself.” “We can’t forget about the person who is dividing us,” Barragán continued. “And who himself is injecting this into the country.” “I cannot,” interjected CNN commentator Nina Turner. “I just can’t.” “This is not about President Donald Trump! This is about racism in the United States of America. Congresswoman I hear you, but on this we’re not Continue reading "CNN’s State of the Union Blows Up Over Northam and Racism: ‘This is Not About President Donald Trump!’"

Gov. Ralph Northam Tells CBS He’s ‘Not Going Anywhere’: Virginia ‘Needs Someone That Can Heal’

Embattled Virginia Governor and moonwalking expert Ralph Northam says he’s “not going anywhere” because the people of his state need “someone that can heal.” On Face the Nation on Sunday, host of CBS This Morning Gayle King was on to preview her interview, airing Monday, with the governor. In the clip, King asked Northam why he still thinks he deserves the job “when so many people are calling for you to step down?” “Virginia needs someone that can heal,” Northam said. “There’s no better person to do that than a doctor. Virginia also needs someone who is strong, who has empathy, who has courage and who has a moral compass. And that’s why I’m not going anywhere.” Northam has admitted to wearing blackface while impersonating Michael Jackson at a 1984 dance contest, but has denied that he was in a yearbook photograph depicting a man in blackface Continue reading "Gov. Trump Draws Criticism for Boasting African Americans ‘Very Angry’ About Northam Blackface

Donald Trump became Spokesman-for-Black-People-in-the-Commonwealth-of-Virginia-in-Chief Sunday morning when he tweeted that “African Americans are very angry at the double standard on full display in Virginia!”, but recent polling suggests Trump is not as in touch with black people as he thinks he is. As part of his regularly-scheduled executive time, Trump weighed in on the multiple scandals engulfing Virginia politics this past week, and gave his expert opinion on the black community’s feelings on the matter: The tweet drew immediate scorn from Twitter users, who noted Trump’s own history of overt racism and lack of standing as an envoy for Black America. But even as a factual matter, there is hard data that clearly shows Trump is incorrect. While the blackface scandal has certainly taken a toll on Continue reading "Trump Draws Criticism for Boasting African Americans ‘Very Angry’ About Northam Blackface"

Ralph Northam Says He’s Planning ‘Reconciliation Tour’ in New Interview: ‘I Have a Lot More to Learn’

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam is speaking out in his first interview since the racist photo on his yearbook page surfaced, indicating he will not resign and plans to serve out the rest of his term addressing issues like racial equity. In the interview with the Washington Post, Northam says, “It’s been a horrific week for Virginia. A lot of individuals across Virginia have been hurt.” It has been a little over a week since that yearbook photo surfaced. Northam initially apologized for being in the photo… only to then deny being in the photo the next day. His explanation to the Post about that is that he “overreacted” and if he did it all over, he “would step back and take a deep breath.” Northam, of course, did admit to darkening his face for a Michael Jackson costume. He talked about his conversations with black lawmakers, and Continue reading "Ralph Northam Says He’s Planning ‘Reconciliation Tour’ in New Interview: ‘I Have a Lot More to Learn’"

National Black Farmers Association President on Meeting With Northam: He Was Sincere, I Believe in Redemption

On Friday, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam––who’s still resisting calls for him to resign––tweeted about meeting with the founder and president of the National Black Farmers Association, John Boyd Jr. Boyd appeared on CNN this morning to defend Northam and he told Victor Blackwell that they prayed together. “The governor was very, very sincere,” Boyd said. “I believe in the power of redemption and forgiveness. Let he who cast the first stone be without sin. That’s nobody. So nobody is perfect. I believe that the governor wants to govern Virginia in the right direction, and he reached out to me, Victor, during the government shutdown. And I can say that other people didn’t reach out to me to see how he could help Continue reading "National Black Farmers Association President on Meeting With Northam: He Was Sincere, I Believe in Redemption"

Ralph Northam Reportedly Was Set to Resign Immediately After Scandal Hit, Then Changed His Mind

A new report suggests that embattled Virginia Governor Ralph Northam (D) came extremely close to stepping down from his post in the early stages of his ongoing scandals. ABC News reports that Northam “had come close to announcing he would resign” on Saturday when he held a press conference on the KKK and blackface photo from his medical school yearbook page. Instead, he changed his mind and offered a series of bizarre comments about how he supposedly wore make-up for a Michael Jackson costume and denied being in the photo. Northam previously said he was in the picture although it wasn’t clear if he the person in blackface or the KKK hood. Beyond Northam’s racism scandal and his controversial abortion remarks, the other two top officials in Virginia’s state government are facing problems of their own. Attorney General Mark Herring has admitted that he once wore blackface too, and Continue reading "Ralph Northam Reportedly Was Set to Resign Immediately After Scandal Hit, Then Changed His Mind"

The Late Show Previews the Next Virginia Politician Scandal: ‘We Ate a Drifter Who We Boiled in a Cannibal Cookpot’

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday satirized the almost-beyond-satire state of affairs in the state of Virginia this week. After multiple Democrat leaders in the state became embroiled in major scandals over a matter of days, it’s hard to think of a fictional next shoe to drop that would top what’s already gone down. But Stephen Colbert and his writers were able to do it. In the format of their fake news feed (LSSC News), the show on Thursday opened with a clip of the actual news about the scandals from CNN. It then cut to their guy: a “Virginia politician” giving a press conference. “As the accounts payable clerk at the Virginia Capitol building, I am 132nd in line for the Virginia governorship,” the skit began. “But knowing how fast Virginia politicians are dropping to scandals, I wanted to get ahead of a story from my past. Media Ignores Trump’s Dangerous ‘Execute a Baby’ Lie, Which Has Gotten People Killed Before

The greatest media failure of President Donald Trump‘s tenure in office may turn out to be their decision to virtually ignore the shocking lie he told during his State of the Union address, when he claimed that a Democratic governor “stated he would execute a baby after birth.” Trump was referring to remarks that Governor Ralph Northam (D-VA) made in a radio interview last week, in which he described the medical treatment of a newborn infant unable to survive on its own. Since that interview, versions of Trump’s lie have been repeated by elected Republicans and Fox News guests and personalities, and gone uncorrected by Fox News anchors. But on the other cable networks, there was scant effort to correct the lies about Northam, if there was any at all. One CNN anchor read a statement from Northam’s office in response to these lies, while one MSNBC Continue reading "Media Ignores Trump’s Dangerous ‘Execute a Baby’ Lie, Which Has Gotten People Killed Before"

TBT: Joy Behar Admitted to Dressing as an ‘African Woman’ for Halloween That Included Dark Makeup

[jwvideoo ID=T9gRuDGM] With the Commonwealth of Virginia’s top leaders and two Florida state leaders embroiled in blackface scandals, the topic of blackface has been front and center. But a new discussion has started over The View co-host Joy Behar’s past admission to dressing as a “beautiful African woman” for a Halloween party that involved darker makeup during a 2016 taping of the hit dayside program. When asked by Raven-Symoné if she was wearing tanning lotion, Behar said she wore makeup “that was a little bit darker than my skin.” At the time, she was called out by Jezebel after the episode aired:
If the timing is correct, that would date this photo around 1971. I can’t really get too bothered at this blackface-lite costume because it was 1971 and people didn’t even know what microaggressions were. I’m more flabbergasted by her willingness to pull this photo out and proudly show the world as Continue reading "TBT: Joy Behar Admitted to Dressing as an ‘African Woman’ for Halloween That Included Dark Makeup"

Washington Post Editorial Board Calls for Virginia Governor to Resign: ‘Mr. Northam’s Time Is Up’

The Washington Post’s editorial board called for Virginia Governor Ralph Northam (D) to resign in a new post on Wednesday. They cited the picture in his medical school yearbook and “the self-inflicted, racially callous and clueless mess” he made after the picture was revealed. “GOV. RALPH NORTHAM (D) can no longer effectively serve the people of Virginia who elected him,” the board wrote. “His shifting and credulity-shredding explanations for the racist photograph on his medical school yearbook page, and the silence into which he then succumbed for days — after initially promising to do “the hard work” of atonement and apology to restore his standing with Virginians — is simply too much.” While it was one thing to at first admit to being in the photo, then later deny it, the board said he did not help his case after admitting to wearing blackface at a different event:

COOL TIMELINE: Lt. Gov. Fairfax Hired Brett Kavanaugh’s Law Firm. His Accuser Hired Christine Blasey-Ford’s.

Stanford professor Vanessa Tyson, who has publicly accused Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax of sexual assault, hired Katz, Marshall & Banks to represent her, NBC News reported Wednesday. That’s the same firm that represented Christine Blasey Ford, the university professor who accused Supreme Court justice Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault. It’s a strange coincidence, made even strangeer by news that Fairfax himself retained the services of Wilkinson Walsh + Eskovitz, the firm that represented Kavanaugh. “I can confirm that I and my firm have been representing the Lieutenant Governor since January 2018,” the firm told a local NPR station earlier this week. Tyson went public with her allegation on Wednesday, releasing a harrowing statement that detailed her claim of sexual assault. “Mr. Fairfax put his hand behind my neck and forcefully pushed my head towards his crotch,” Tyson said in the statement, released by her lawyers. “As I Continue reading "COOL TIMELINE: Lt. If the Virginia’s Top Three Officials Are Out, the Next in Line Is… A Republican

In light of the controversy engulfing the top officials in Virginia’s state government, it’s possible that the state could fall out of Democratic hands and into Republican leadership. Governor Ralph Northam is still embroiled in the controversy of a racist photo resurfaced from his 1984 yearbook, prompting calls from virtually every Democrat that matters for his resignation. Today, Attorney General Mark Herring admitted that he once wore blackface while Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax is reportedly using profanity against his sexual assault accuser behind closed doors. There’s no telling if this flurry of scandal will bring down the three heads of Virginia, but if it does, it’s worth considering the fact that Kirk Cox, the House of Delegates Speaker and 4th in line for the governorship, is a Republican. From Article V, Section 16 of Virginia’s Constitution:
The Speaker of the House of Delegates, if he is eligible to serve Continue reading "If the Virginia’s Top Three Officials Are Out, the Next in Line Is… A Republican"

VA Sen. Mark Warner: ‘This Has Been an Awful Week For Virginia’

Senator Mark Warner (D- VA) spoke to reporters today admit the latest chaos from his state. To recap, the governor admitted to blackface in a press conference denying he’s in the racist photo on his yearbook page, the lieutenant governor is being accused of sexual assault, and the attorney general just admitted to wearing blackface to a college party in the 80s. So perhaps it’s a slight understatement for Warner to tell reporters, “This has been an awful week for Virginia.” He said he was “shocked and incredibly disappointed” in Continue reading "VA Sen. Just as Ralph Northam was starting to recede from the news cycle… this happened. In the span of a few minutes, news broke that Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring (D) wore blackface in college (which he admitted to), and that Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax (D) privately said “fuck that bitch” about the woman accusing him of sexual assault (which his office is denying). Thus sending Politics Twitter into a shocked frenzy:

Is Republican Oppo Research Really This Awful, Or is the News Media Not Doing Its Job?

Within the last week, two prominent Democrats have had major bombshells from their past detonated in ways that have probably destroyed their future political aspirations. Neither of these long-held secrets, however, came to be publicly known while they were actually running against Republicans for the offices that they now hold. I’m referring to Virginia Governor Ralph Northam and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren. Northam’s 1984 medical school yearbook was just revealed to contain a racist photo on his personal page, while Warren’s 1986 registration to the Texas state bar has her race outrageously listed, apparently in her own handwriting, as “American Indian.” Both of these scandalous exposures, had they been known to the voters at the time of certain elections, would have easily caused these candidates to be defeated by Republicans they beat in fairly close contests. And yet, somehow, the Republican operatives working for their opponents, Ed Gillespie and Continue reading "Is Republican Oppo Research Really This Awful, Or is the News Media Not Doing Its Job?"

At SOTU Trump Falsely Claims Northam ‘Stated He Would Execute a Baby After Birth’

Donald Trump told a shocking lie at Tuesday night’s State of the Union address when he claimed that embattled Virginia Governor Ralph Northam “basically stated he would execute a baby after birth.” “Lawmakers in New York cheered with delight upon the passage of legislation that would allow a baby to be ripped from the mother’s womb moments before birth,” Trump said, which is false. “These are living, feeling, beautiful babies who will never get the chance to share their love and dreams with the world,” he added. “And then, we had the case of the Governor of Virginia where he stated he would execute a baby after birth,” Trump continued. Trump’s claim about Northam is categorically false. During a radio show last week, Governor Northam described a scenario in which a distressed infant is delivered, resuscitated, and then decisions about the child’s medical care were left to the parents and Continue reading "At SOTU Trump Falsely Claims Northam ‘Stated He Would Execute a Baby After Birth’"
