Hawaii Congress Members Want Answers for Missile Alert Screw-Up: ‘The Whole State Was Terrified’

For a few minutes today, Hawaiians were freaking out over a false alarm saying there was a missile inbound. And the entire congressional delegation of Hawaii is demanding answers to what happened. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard was quick to tweet it was a false alarm, and she subsequently called into CNN to talk about what happened and said they’re getting to the bottom of it: Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa, Senator Brian Schatz, and Senator Continue reading "Hawaii Congress Members Want Answers for Missile Alert Screw-Up: ‘The Whole State Was Terrified’"

Hawaii Officials Quickly Clarify There’s No Missile Threat After Emergency Alert Starts a Panic

People in Hawaii started to panic after receiving a pretty alarming alert on their phones: Hawaii officials quickly clarified that this is a false alarm:

Tulsi Gabbard Warns People Who Want Trump’s Impeachment: Pence Would Be ‘More Effective’

Tulsi Gabbard‘s record throughout Donald Trump‘s presidency has been an interesting one. Her receptiveness, determination to put aside partisanship, and willingness to meet with him have confused and alienated some Democrats. Can you blame them? (The Hawaii representative was a Bernie Sanders backer.) And per CNN, she only muddied the waters more this week during a town hall. She told the assembled crowd that she’s been looking into what it would take to impeach Trump. She said this:
“On the issue of impeachment, I am doing my homework. I am studying more about the impeachment process. I will just say I understand the calls for impeachment, but what I am being cautious about and what I give you food for thought about is that if President Trump is impeached, the problems don’t go away, because then you have a Vice President Pence who becomes President Pence.”

Wolf Blitzer Presses Democratic Rep. Who Met With Assad: ‘Who Do You Blame for Those Deaths?’

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer spoke with Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard––who met with Bashar al-Assad back in January––about the U.S. strikes in Syria last night. Gabbard tweeted earlier this week that the chemical attack must be condemned, but she said that “whoever is found responsible… must be held accountable” instead of directly calling out the Assad regime. Today she slammed the airstrikes in another Twitter thread:

Going Zombie? Firestorm After CNN’s Aslan Eats Human Brain With Fringe Hindus

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, among others, blasted CNN host Reza Aslan this week in the wake of the most recent episode of his religion mini-series, Believer. On Sunday, Aslan featured an obscure Hindu sect called the Aghoris, who are known for non-mainstream practices, including cannibalism. The scholar turned TV host participated in some Aghori rituals, including eating a piece of a dead person’s brain.

Aslan wrote about this experience in a short Facebook post on Sunday: “Want to know what a dead guy’s brain tastes like? Charcoal. It was burnt to a crisp!”

People magazine’s Cici Adams detailed the controversy over Aslan and the Aghori in a Thursday post. Most critics took less issue with his cannibalism, and focused more on his apparent misrepresentation of the Hindu religion:

Many have since condemned the journalist, accusing him of using a fringe group to represent the entire Hindu faith. Critics include Continue reading "Going Zombie? Firestorm After CNN’s Aslan Eats Human Brain With Fringe Hindus"

Dem Rep.: ‘Pretty Offensive’ for People to Criticize Trump Choosing Generals for Cabinet

Democratic congresswoman and veteran Tulsi Gabbard is not happy about all the criticism of Donald Trump picking generals for his cabinet. Trump is picking General James Mattis, General John Kelly, and Lieutenant General Michael Flynn for high-level positions in his administration, and there’s been quite a bit of blowback to that. A lot of people have pointed out the importance of a civilian-controlled military, while some have even began to use the word “junta.” On CNN today, Jake Tapper asked Gabbard about these concerns people have expressed, and Gabbard gave a very blunt answer:
“As a veteran and as somebody who’s still serving in the Army National Guard, I find it pretty offensive for people to outright discriminate against veterans.”
She Continue reading "Dem Rep.: ‘Pretty Offensive’ for People to Criticize Trump Choosing Generals for Cabinet"

Dem Rep. in Statement After Trump Meeting: We Can’t Let Partisanship ‘Destroy Our Country’

gabbardToday Donald Trump met with a Democratic member of Congress, and no, hell has not frozen over. Hawaii’s Tulsi Gabbard is a combat veteran who backed Bernie Sanders during the primaries and publicly expressed deep skepticism about Hillary Clinton (not to mention the fact that she was a DNC vice-chair until she went rogue and endorsed Sanders). A Daily Beast piece on her back in July bore the headline “Tulsi Gabbard: The Bernie-Endorsing Congresswoman Who Trump Fans Can Love.” So whether it’s because of certain policy views or that she thinks the Obama administration’s inability to say “radical Islam” is a problem, Gabbard met with Trump as he continues planning its transition. After the meeting, Gabbard released a statement on her meeting with Trump, saying, “I believe we can disagree, even strongly, but still come together on issues that matter to the American people and affect their Continue reading "Dem Rep. in Statement After Trump Meeting: We Can’t Let Partisanship ‘Destroy Our Country’"
