First Round NCAA Tournament action continues Thursday with an eight-nine match-up featuring one very unlikely team. It’s the Vanderbilt Commodores vs. the improbable Northwestern Wildcats. Northwestern made the Tournament for the first time in school history. Behind head coach Chris Collins, the Wildcats had a terrific season in the Big 10, and now will look to win their first ever Tournament game. Vanderbilt, meanwhile, had a solid year in the SEC, and appears primed to ruin Northwestern’s feel-good story. The Commodores are peaking at the right time, having won seven of nine to close out the year. A win here likely sets up a second-round showdown against Gonzaga. According to a report in the Tennessean, former Vanderbilt football player and convicted rapist Cory Batey — who was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison — said that the motive for his crime was a payback for slavery. “That’s for 400 years of slavery you b—-,” Batey said during the rape, according to multiple Tennessean sources. The story says that prosecutors acknowledged a racial statement was made, but it was never mentioned in open court. Police said that Batey and three other former Vanderbilt players raped a 21-year-old woman on the floor while she was unconscious. In addition to Batey, one of the other players has already been convicted on eight counts, while two others pleaded not guilty and are awaiting trial. Batey’s 15-year sentence, imposed by Judge Monte Watkins, was the mandatory minimum for the crime under Tennessee law.
