Tanks, and the Media’s Fanatical Dedication to Hysteria

Members of the U.S. Army park an M1 Abrams tank in front of the Lincoln Memorial ahead of the Fourth of July "Salute to America" celebration on July 3, 2019 in Washington, DC. Democrats this week are having a field day, so to speak, over the news that tanks that will be on display on the Fourth of July. The worriers are positively gasped out, and have no more “well I never” left in the bank, over a day out from the event. The Trump plan to roll and fly military assets on the date of American Independence from a foreign power is the symbol of everything wrong with America right now, is the basic gist of the objection. The American press, naturally, can find no fault in that position. As is the norm, they simply repeat the Democrats’ concerns and debate the manner or extent to which everyone should be terrified. The central premise, that this is bad and that you should be terrified, is mostly unchallenged. But why? What is so bad about tanks? MSNBC’s Joy Reid thinks that it’s different Continue reading "Tanks, and the Media’s Fanatical Dedication to Hysteria"

CNN’s Fareed Zakaria Embraces Argument Against Asylum System: It Pains Me to Say This, But Trump is Right

CNN’s Fareed Zakaria has spent several days among Twitter’s hot topics of debate, having said on Sunday that, while it pains him to admit it, President Donald Trump is right about the problems with asylum claims at the border. Couched as it was in criticism of Trump’s motivations and solutions, Zakaria made a case against the current way asylum claims are dealt with, and the prevailing liberal activist philosophy on the subject, using precisely the argument made by Trump and the right without caveat. That is, except inasmuch as he says it’s a matter of objective reality, and shouldn’t be partisan, or at least should be bipartisan. He began his argument with that startling framing, a wise move if one wants to be viral. “Given President Trump’s mean-spirited and often bigoted attitudes on immigration, it pains me to say this, but he is right that the United States faces a Continue reading "CNN’s Fareed Zakaria Embraces Argument Against Asylum System: It Pains Me to Say This, But Trump is Right"

Michael Eric Dyson on Betsy Ross Flag Symbolism: ‘Why Don’t We Wear a Swastika for July Fourth?’

The controversial decision by Nike to cancel production of a shoe emblazoned with the Betsy Ross American flag has elicited several days of animated discourse, in approbation or opprobrium, depending on the audience. On MSNBC on Wednesday, Georgetown professor and New Republic writer Michael Eric Dyson, a regular on the network, spoke with anchor Hallie Jackson on the topic and related the flag to other symbols of hate such as the Nazi swastika and burning crosses. After a report outlining the controversy to date, anchor Jackson asked Dyson, “can you explain why this particular flag, this symbol, is so offensive to some?” “Well it hails from the Revolutionary period, of course, of this nation’s founding, which was deeply embroiled in, you know, enslavement, of the owners of slaves, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and the like,” Dyson began. “But also it’s the recent use of this flag that has Continue reading "Michael Eric Dyson on Betsy Ross Flag Symbolism: ‘Why Don’t We Wear a Swastika for July Fourth?’"

Percent of Democrats Who Say There’s a ‘Crisis’ at Border Up 47 Points Since January

US President Donald Trump speaks with members of the US Customs and Border Patrol as he tours the border wall between the United States and Mexico in Calexico, California on April 5, 2019. CNN’s latest SSRS poll had some fascinating results regarding the Democrats running for the nomination that made news on Monday. But the horse race wasn’t the only question SSRS and CNN polled that produced a newsworthy result. In results released Tuesday about how people view the border situation, there was a dramatic shift among Democrats. On the question of whether or not there is a crisis at the border, Democrats shifted 47 points. What was once a mocked Trump term is now echoed by Democratic politicians and, it turns out, the prevailing view in America: that there is a border crisis. On the question of whether the respondents consider “the current situation at the border between the United States and Mexico” to be “a crisis,” 74% said “yes it is a crisis.” That’s up from 45% in January. That big shift was biggest specifically among Democrats. In January, just

Qatar Sponsors War, Hate, Terror, and … Politico Playbook!

Politico Playbook Sponsored By Qatar A lot of advertising online is arranged by computers, by algorithm or automation. When it comes to banner ads there is a general sense of whoever is willing to pay gets the spot. That’s why you may see a Democrat campaign ad on a conservative site, or scammy weight loss ad on a prestige media outlet that debunks scams. It’s less automated when you see ads in a newsletter, particularly sponsors (as opposed, for example, to keywork or context ads). And even with those caveats there are generally some lines. You don’t see porn ads at the New York Times. But you did, if you read Politico’s Playbook, see one from the government of Qatar, which is not only regularly under fire as a state sponsor of terror but is controversial among both American allies and enemies alike. And we’re not talking about a tourism ad, either. Tuesday’s Playbook — Continue reading "Qatar Sponsors War, Hate, Terror, and … Politico Playbook!"

Shock Poll: Longtime Frontrunner Biden Now Locked in Tight Four-Way Battle With Harris, Warren, Sanders

The first Democratic debate, which aired in two messy parts last week, appears to have had an impact on voter opinions in the latest CNN/SSRS poll, out Monday. Former Vice President Joe Biden, who has dominated since entering the race, and even before officially declaring, took a hit, and others surged. The result? A tighter, four-way race for the top spot. Biden’s formerly commanding lead in this poll narrowed to just five points post-debate. He lost ten points, going from 32% to 22%, on the question of which candidate respondents would “be most likely to support for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020.” Meanwhile, on that same question, Sen. Kamala Harris surged an almost equal amount forward, picking up 9 points to go from 8% to 17%. The Harris surge also put her over Sen. Bernie Sanders, who dropped from 18% in May to 14% in

CNN’s Brian Stelter Condemns Antifa Assault of Independent Journalist Andy Ngo

The attack on Andy Ngo in Portland brought with it to social media not just outcry or condemnation, but naturally bickering, finger-pointing, and accusations against other people of not caring enough or caring too much about the independent, conservative-leaning, gay photojournalist for filming at an Antifa rally. CNN’s Brian Stelter took heat on Twitter for using the word “messenger” regarding Ngo, in a somewhat awkwardly phrased tweet that, it perhaps should have been apparent to anyone, was meant to invoke the phrase “don’t shoot the messenger.” That is, don’t attack the reporter for accurately showing your activities. But Stelter’s message on Sunday was less awkward and more clear. “One more important story that you need to know about before I take a break,” said Stelter. “This is a protest that turned violent against a member of the media in Portland, Oregon, this weekend.” That is a framing of Continue reading "CNN’s Brian Stelter Condemns Antifa Assault of Independent Journalist Andy Ngo"

George Stephanopoulos Calls Out Julián Castro: Don’t Your Positions ‘Add Up’ to ‘Open Borders’?

Democrats running for the 2020 nomination had a few “raise your hand” moments at the NBC debate last week, and among them was a question about decriminalizing illegal border crossings. Julián Castro was among those who raised his hand, and on ABC’s This Week on Sunday, host George Stephanopoulos asked him about it. At the debate, the specific direction from the moderators was to “Raise your hand if you think it should be a civil offense rather than a crime to cross the border without documentation?” Stephanopoulos pointed out that President Trump tweeted about the moment, and that the New York Post wrote about it. After reading from the reactions, Stephanopoulos asked, “Did you give an opening to the Republicans?” “Not at all,” said Castro, in contradiction to not just what the Post and Trump said, but also what the New York Times wrote in an article on Continue reading "George Stephanopoulos Calls Out Julián Castro: Don’t Your Positions ‘Add Up’ to ‘Open Borders’?"

Tucker Carlson: North Korean Regime is ‘Monstrous’ But Leading a Country ‘Means Killing People’

President Donald Trump made history on Sunday when he became the first sitting President to cross into North Korea, and the big news was covered by all the networks. On Fox & Friends, they interviewed Tucker Carlson, who is on the trip with the president, about the big moment. In talking about the regime, Carlson made some startling statements comparing Kim Jong Un and his “Stalinist” regime to countries around the world, including American allies. “There’s no defending the North Korean regime, which is a monstrous regime. It’s the last really Stalinist regime in the world,” said Carlson by phone. “It’s a disgusting place, obviously, so there’s no defending it.” “On the other hand,” he said, immediately switching to defending it. “You know, you’ve got to be honest about what it means to lead a country, it means killing people. Not on the scale that the North Continue reading "Tucker Carlson: North Korean Regime is ‘Monstrous’ But Leading a Country ‘Means Killing People’"

Former governor and current CNN contributor Chris Christie appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Thursday night, following the second half of the NBC News Democratic Debate, and he had some notes. Even though we’re over a year from the election, and over seven months from the first primary election, Christie said it’s time to say goodbye to a few of the candidates, following their performances on the debate stage in the two night event. First, host Stephen Colbert asked for the positives, and asked who was impressive and has “got game.” Christie praised Kamala Harris first and foremost. “You know, first debates are about proving who belongs and who doesn’t. Especially in a field that big. It was the same way at our debates,” he said, referring to his own run for the Republican nomination back in 2016. “Harris tonight proved what I’ve known all along, prosecutors Continue reading "Chris Christie Tells Colbert After #DemDebate, ‘Say Goodbye’ to Swalwell, Yang, Williamson and .. During and after part one of NBC’s Democratic primary debate, a number of people, including Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, said the network was unfairly favoring Elizabeth Warren. On This Morning on Thursday, CBS News’ chief correspondent Major Garrett said the same, knocking the rival network for the apparent bias. “What is interesting to me about last night is Elizabeth Warren got five questions in the first 40 minutes,” said Garrett as they discussed the debate. “That solidified the appearance of her being the most important person on that stage.” CBS This Morning co-host Gayle King agreed. “I noticed that, too, Major,” she said. “If I was the other candidates I would say –-“ Garrett continued as King added her observation. “And other candidates were getting a little uncomfortable with it,” said Garrett. King agreed again. Garrett pointed out it was less lop-sided in the second hour of the debate, Continue reading "CBS’s Major Garrett Smacks NBC for Favoring Elizabeth Warren in Democratic Debate Part One"

Bill de Blasio Pleads Ignorance to Wolf Blitzer Over Che Guevara Quote

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio quoted Che Guevara on Thursday morning, sparking a lot of negative reaction. On CNN on Thursday afternoon, he apologized, claiming that he didn’t know any better. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, who was conducting an interview that mostly prompted the mayor to offer campaign points without challenging them, gave de Blasio “the chance to respond” and “explain”. He brought up de Blasio’s tweeted explanation. “You said you had no idea you were quoting Che Guevara,” said Blitzer. “So where did you pick up that phrase in the first place?” “Yeah, look Wolf, that’s an honest mistake and I do apologize for it, he said. “I literally meant it as a Spanish phrase, that these folks were going to be victorious, hang onto victory. that kind of thing.” He said that the workers at the airport took it on good faith and added, Continue reading "Bill de Blasio Pleads Ignorance to Wolf Blitzer Over Che Guevara Quote"

Jake Tapper Pushes AOC on Concentration Camp Comments: Is That What You Called Them When Obama Was President?

When Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez referred to ICE detention facilities as “concentration camps” recently, she caused a huge and continuing controversy in which she has tripled and quadrupled down despite negative reactions from the right and even some on the left. On Twitter Wednesday night, the freshman Rep. tweeted again about it, saying that she is calling them “what they are.” CNN’s Jake Tapper pressed AOC on that topic in an interview on Thursday’s The Lead. “Two questions here,” said Tapper after reading the Tweet. “One, you’re taking credit for calling these camps, detention centers — you’re taking credit for those developments by using the term ‘Concentration camp.’ And two, what do you say to Americans, especially survivors of the Holocaust or individuals who are related to survivors of the Holocaust who say, look, academically you’re right, the term concentration camp did not necessarily mean death camp, but Continue reading "Jake Tapper Pushes AOC on Concentration Camp Comments: Is That What You Called Them When Obama Was President?"

Eric Swalwell Swipes at Rivals Ahead of Night Two Debate: I Won’t Be ‘Butchering Spanish’

Part two of the NBC Democratic Debate on Thursday will feature the second group of ten candidates vying for the nomination, which includes Rep. Eric Swalwell of California. He spoke with CNN’s Brooke Baldwin ahead of that debate about the topics, the other candidates, and whether he, like Beto O’Rourke and Cory Booker, will speak Spanish during the debate. He won’t, he said, be “butchering” Spanish during his appearance on stage. Baldwin asked first about healthcare, and about the idea of ending private healthcare, a question polled by a show of hands in part one of the debate on Wednesday, when both Sen. Elizabeth Warren and New York Mayor Bill McCheese were the only ones who raised theirs. “Do you think that is disqualifying to win a general election for her?” she asked, offering a chance to burn Warren. Swalwell dissembled at first, but when Baldwin interrupted to Continue reading "Eric Swalwell Swipes at Rivals Ahead of Night Two Debate: I Won’t Be ‘Butchering Spanish’"

Lester Holt Asks 2020 Dems to Raise Their Hands For Government-Run Health Care. The Result Was Lopsided.

The “by a show of hands” challenge has a controversial past in American presidential debates. Republicans chafed and objected in 2007. Trump stood alone in 2016. And on Wednesday at the NBC Democratic Debate, the first primary debate of the 2020 season, the show of hands-on health care got big applause from the crowd, but only two hands up on stage. NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt posed the question, following on Sen. Elizabeth Warren‘s answer to the prior debate point. “We’re going to turn to the issue of healthcare right now, I’m really trying to understand where there may or may not be daylight between you,” said Holt. He pointed out that many people have health insurance through their employer, before asking about what the candidates would do. “Who here would abolish their private health insurance in favor of a government-run plan, just a show of hands,” said Continue reading "Lester Holt Asks 2020 Dems to Raise Their Hands For Government-Run Health Care. Trump Tells Reporter It’s ‘None of Your Business’ When Asked About Conversations with Putin

President Donald Trump spoke with reporters on his way to Marine One on Wednesday, taking several questions on a wide range of topics and often giving short, emphatic answers, as has become habit. When he was asked about his conversations with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, his response was sound bite gold. In the CNN clip above, it’s hard to hear the question. But the reporter, CNN’s Sarah Westwood, subsequently tweeted out what she’d asked, which was whether Trump will ask Putin “not to meddle in the 2020 election during their meeting.” Trump’s answer is easy to hear. “I’ll have a very good conversation with him. What Continue reading "Trump Tells Reporter It’s ‘None of Your Business’ When Asked About Conversations with Putin"
