2020 presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke posted an essay revealing he is descended from slave owners, saying “I benefit from a system that my ancestors built to favor themselves at the expense of others.” The former Texas congressman posted the essay to his Medium account Sunday night. The essay is titled “Rose and Eliza” who O’Rourke says are the two people his great-great-great-grandfather owned as slaves. “I was recently given documents showing that both Amy and I are descended from people who owned slaves,” he wrote. “In the aggregate, slavery, its legacy and the ensuing forms of institutionalized racism have produced an America with stark differences in opportunities and outcomes, depending on race,” O’Rourke wrote. “I benefit from a system that my ancestors built to favor themselves at the expense of others. That only increases the urgency I feel to help change this country so that it works for those Continue reading "Beto O’Rourke Shares Essay Revealing He’s Descended from Slave Owners"

President Donald Trump stuck to his attack on freshmen Democratic congresswomen from earlier Sunday, arguing his opponents are defending “people who speak so badly of our Country.” Trump has been widely condemned for his tweets attacking freshmen Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA). He doubled down on his stance Sunday night:

A new poll from NBC News and The Wall Street Journal shows President Donald Trump behind many of his Democratic opponents in the 2020 election. According to the July poll, former Vice President Joe Biden leads Trump by nine points and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) leads him by seven points, both outside the poll’s margin of error of 3.5 points. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) leads Trump by five points, 48 percent to 43 percent. And Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) is ahead of Trump by just one percentage point, 45 percent to 44 percent. NBC News noted that Trump is fairing worse than President Barack Obama did for the same poll at roughly this point in the election cycle back in 2012. Obama held a 1-point edge over eventual Republican nominee Mitt Romney among registered voters, something Trump doesn’t have for any of the above listed candidates. According to Continue reading "NBC/WSJ Poll Shows Trump Trailing Multiple Democratic Candidates in Head-to-Head Matchups"

CNN anchor Ana Cabrera talked about her experiences with racism, relating it to President Donald Trump’s attacking congresswomen by telling them to “go back” where they came from. “As a woman of color, as a Latina, I have heard these sentiments directed at me from being called a beaner by a northern Idaho farmer who asked where I was from when covering a wildfire in my first job as a young reporter to the many hateful Tweets and messages I receive today from anonymous critics,” Cabrera said. “These words are coming from the president of the United States,” Cabrera exclaimed to CNN contributor Dean Obeidallah. “They absolutely are,” Obeidallah said. “I hear this right-wing thing where they say go back to your country and I joke my country is New Jersey. That’s one thing you can do in a one on one situation or online.” “The president in the Continue reading "CNN’s Ana Cabrera Shares Experience With Racism, Relating it to Trump Attacks on Dem Congresswomen"

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) called President Donald Trump “a racist ass” during an appearance on MSNBC and added “I can’t wait until he leaves.” “I never thought I’d see the day when a president was telling immigrants to go back to where we came from. Donald Trump is demonstrating he’s a racist ass. He’s not uniting us. I can’t wait until he leaves the office of the presidency,” Lieu told MSNBC’s Alex Witt on Weekends with Alex Witt. Lieu’s comments echo a tweet he made against Trump earlier, which was discussed on the show.

Reporter Salena Zito seemed to minimize President Donald Trump’s Sunday tweets on CNN, adding “I don’t know that this moves anything.” Zito, a political reporter for The Washington Examiner and columnist for The New York Post, was appearing on CNN Newsroom with Fredricka Whitfield Sunday. “You know, this is — here’s the unfortunate thing,” Zito said. “That we are so polarized right now that even if you are a Trump supporter and you don’t like what he says, you’re either — you may not even say anything at all.” Zito went on to say that Trump supporters “may not even see it as racist because they will take that line where it says that you can go back and fix it and then come back.” Zito continued to blame polarization. “I just think that we are so polarized, I don’t know that this moves anything. I’m Continue reading "CNN Analyst: Trump’s ‘Go Back’ Attack Might Not be Seen as Racist Because He Said They Could Return to U.S."

Former Rep. Mia Love (R-UT) was clearly exasperated by President Donald Trump’s tweets insulting progressive Democratic lawmakers in her CNN appearance today. “I’m not making any excuses for him. It has to stop. I always feel like I’m not part of the ‘America First’ that he goes out and he talks about all the time,” Love said. “I’m an American. I’ve always been an American. I’ve been a Republican longer than he has, so, you know, I think that that’s the problem. Most people don’t see, don’t feel like they’re part of this America that he talks about,” she continued. CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield was asking Love for her “visceral reaction” to Trump’s tweets Sunday afternoon. “I don’t like any of it and I’ve always called him out on tweets,” Love said “I think that he has to be more presidential. Everyone is tired of not being a representative of everyone Continue reading "Former GOP Rep. Mia Love Frustrated By Trump’s Tweets: ‘It Has to Stop’"

Fox’s Kurtz Goes After Brian Karem: ‘Can CNN Justify’ Keeping Him After Gorka Dustup?

Fox News’ Howard Kurtz openly mused about whether CNN should fire contributor Brian Karem following a public confrontation with former President Donald Trump aide Sebastian Gorka. Kurtz was speaking with Fox News’ Carley Shimkus on MediaBuzz Sunday, when he played a clip of the dust-up and asked “Carly, can CNN justify having somebody on its payroll that acts like that?” Shimkus was more diplomatic, saying “it was almost like a metaphor for how much team Trump and the media just don’t get along. It’s no surprise that this would happen, given the close proximity of the two groups. I think that both sides really displayed some poor sportsmanship.” Kurtz then seemed to excuse Gorka’s behavior by saying “he is an aggressive guy when he thinks he’s been unfairly accused.” “But there’s simply no question that Brian Karem, a very liberal commentator, started this fight, and I think Continue reading "Fox’s Kurtz Goes After Brian Karem: ‘Can CNN Justify’ Keeping Him After Gorka Dustup?"

Trump’s ‘Straight-Up Racism’ Stuns CNN’s Brian Stelter Speechless: ‘More Obvious’ and ‘More Frightening’

CNN anchor Brian Stelter was stunned by President Donald Trump’s tweets directed at Democratic congresswomen, calling Trump’s suggestion that they leave the U.S. “straight-up racist.” Stelter began Sunday’s edition of Reliable Sources by discussing Trump’s wild social media summit, noting “These smears, these lies, this misinformation that comes mostly on the right from pro-Trump websites … They are softening the ground for straight-up racism out of the president’s Twitter account.” Stelter read Trump’s tweets aloud, then noted with bemusement that “The president is talking about Democratic congresswomen who need to go back to where they’re from.” That observation was followed by six full seconds of stunned silence from Stelter, who then threw up his arms and said “It’s 2019. We’re two and a half years into the Trump presidency and his racism is becoming more obvious, more frightening.” “There are millions of Americans, black Continue reading "Trump’s ‘Straight-Up Racism’ Stuns CNN’s Brian Stelter Speechless: ‘More Obvious’ and ‘More Frightening’"

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said he doesn’t care if migrants held in the detention centers he toured with Vice President Mike Pence are detained for well over a year. “I don’t care if they have to stay in these facilities for 400 days, we’re not going to let those men go that I saw,” Graham told Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo on this week’s edition of Sunday Morning Futures. “I saw 900 illegal immigrants that were captured for coming into our country illegally, housed in detention facilities that was meant for 385. So they had to put a tent in the back. What I saw is a bunch of people who have been here before, broke the law before, and we’re not going to let them go,” Graham said. Graham also said immigration enforcement officials are doing an “incredible job” and says he plans to introduce a resolution in Congress to Continue reading "Lindsey Graham Says ‘I Don’t Care’ if Migrants are Detained for ‘400 Days’: ‘We’re not Going to Let These People Go’"

While New York City has experienced a widespread blackout, Mayor Bill de Blasio was many states away and needed to call into CNN for an interview from Iowa. The 2020 presidential contender didn’t immediately commit to dropping everything and returning to the city however. “I’m going to get more information in the next hour or so, and we’ll adjust my schedule accordingly, depending on what I hear,” de Blasio told CNN’s Ana Cabrera Saturday night. Cabrera also asked how the city prepares for blackouts and outages, which de Blasio says have been rare but officials have prepared for and have planned responses. “I have to tell you, blackouts have become rare in New York City. I’m hopeful again this is something that will be a limited duration, but no, we used to have a fair number of them. And lately, certainly in the six years I’ve been mayor, they’ve been Continue reading "Bill de Blasio Gives Interview from Iowa While NYC Experiences Massive Power Outage"

Widespread power outages have been reported in New York City Saturday night, mainly affecting the Upper West Side and Midtown neighborhoods. Power utility ConEdison reported that tens of thousands of people were without power, and many subways have gone dark. A number of movie theaters and subways were evacuated for people’s safety and a number of people were reported trapped in elevators. Even parts of New York’s famed Times Square billboards have gone dark. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who is not in the city as he is on the campaign trail in Iowa, says he is keeping up to date on the blackouts.
“I spoke to our police commissioner, our emergency management commissioner, my Chief of Staff at city hall. Everyone is coordinating. We’ll have a better picture in the next few minutes or next half hour or so. But all of our emergency personnel are Continue reading "Widespread Blackouts Grip New York City, Thousands Without Power"

2020 presidential contender Mayor Pete Buttigieg defended high-value fundraisers to CNN’s David Axelrod, saying “we are trying to reach everybody at every level.” “You raised quite a bit of money, almost $25 million in a quarter which was phenomenal,” Axelrod said. “You’ve done 70 fundraisers in places like Hollywood, Silicon Valley, Wall Street. … Does it give you any concern?” “We are trying to reach everybody at every level. In addition to the traditional political work we do we have a lot of grass roots fund raisers where tickets are very affordable,” Buttigieg said. “Until we change our campaign finance system, we are going to continue to have this problem that the people we elect and expect to spend their time solving our policy problems are spending way too much time raising the dollars they need to in order to play the field,” Buttigieg explained. “Including you? S.E. Cupp Says Democratic Infighting Recalls Tea Party Insurgency: ‘I Have Seen This Movie Before’

CNN host S.E. Cupp said the ongoing tension between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and progressives like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reminds her a lot of the rise of the Tea Party during the Barack Obama presidency. “I have seen this movie before. It ends tragically,” Cupp said in the open of S.E. Cupp Unfiltered Saturday. “The year was 2009 and growing American political movement called the Tea Party was catching hold. They were Republicans that were initially opposed to spending and the deficit,” she continued. “It eventually morphed into Republican infighting over, well, everything, producing a fringier, farther-right Republican Party and pushing moderates out the door.” Cupp then argued this all eventually resulted in the presidency of Donald Trump and his takeover of the Republican Party. She then played a clip of Trump attacking former House Speaker Paul Ryan, warning “Democrats, if you are not careful this Continue reading "S.E. MSNBC’s Joy Reid and a panel on her show discussed the infighting currently roiling the House Democrats. On AM Joy Saturday, Reid discussed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s current tension with progressive lawmakers like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) that was sparked after Pelosi dismissed progressives in a New York Times interview. “There are four star freshmen who get a lot of attention. It probably annoys other members of Congress, to be blunt. Then they’re standing out and going their own way on issues and bills,” Reid said, asking former congresswoman Donna Edwards (D-MD) if this is why there is tension in the caucus. Edwards said no, adding “you have some generational issues, but you also have a circumstance where you’ve got these women who have risen to power. They came from the outside, some of them beating well-liked incumbents.” “I think that is causing some friction both within the caucus Continue reading "Joy Reid Panel Tackles House Democrats’ Infighting: ‘The Bottom Line is They Do Need Each Other’"

You know, he threw out dirt and wouldn’t let me respond. It was about political theater. He ran out of there like a little girl. He’s a coward. He didn’t want to hear my response,” Homan said on Lou Dobbs Tonight Friday. Federal prosecutors say wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein attempted to pay off two potential witnesses who could testify against him as he faces sex trafficking charges. Authorities said Epstein wired $350,000 to two people in late 2018–soon after The Miami Herald’s Julie K Brown published her investigation into Epstein’s secret deal with Florida prosecutors in 2008. The U.S Attorney’s office in Manhattan made the new allegations in a court filing asking to deny Epstein’s bail, according to The New York Times. Epstein has pleaded not guilty to the charges he faces in New York. He faces sex trafficking and conspiracy charges.

Prosecutors alleged Epstein wired $250,000 to an employee and $100,000 to a second person, both of whom have been identified as possible co-conspirators.
