MSNBC’s Joy Reid and a panel on her show discussed the infighting currently roiling the House Democrats. On AM Joy Saturday, Reid discussed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s current tension with progressive lawmakers like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) that was sparked after Pelosi dismissed progressives in a New York Times interview. “There are four star freshmen who get a lot of attention. It probably annoys other members of Congress, to be blunt. Then they’re standing out and going their own way on issues and bills,” Reid said, asking former congresswoman Donna Edwards (D-MD) if this is why there is tension in the caucus. Edwards said no, adding “you have some generational issues, but you also have a circumstance where you’ve got these women who have risen to power. They came from the outside, some of them beating well-liked incumbents.” “I think that is causing some friction both within the caucus Continue reading "Joy Reid Panel Tackles House Democrats’ Infighting: ‘The Bottom Line is They Do Need Each Other’"

Joy Reid: Trump ‘Styles Himself a Tyrant,’ Tanks on 4th of July May Be a Threat to Fellow Americans

MSNBC’s Joy Reid argued today that President Donald Trump rolling out tanks on the 4th of July for the big celebration on the Mall this week may be a threatening message to fellow Americans. The president has been talking about big 4th of July plans for a while now, including fighter jets and tanks. His involvement and concerns about the celebration being too partisan, as well as some logistical concerns raised, have garnered a lot of criticism leading up to the big day on Thursday. Reid said that Trump “sort of aspires to be a mini-Putin or Kim Jong Un” and he’s clearly influenced by what he’s seen not just from Kim, but when he was in France on Bastille Day. And she asked who it is that Trump is sending a message to with the tanks:
“Who is that message to? It’s certainly not to tyrants because he Continue reading "Joy Reid: Trump ‘Styles Himself a Tyrant,’ Tanks on 4th of July May Be a Threat to Fellow Americans"

Joy Reid applauded Kamala Harris for her gutsy performance and forceful presence throughout Thursday evening’s Democratic debate. Speaking with her colleagues for post-debate reaction on MSNBC, Reid stated that the crowded 2020 field will eventually narrow, and the contenders need to demonstrate their capacity to go up against President Donald Trump. “I think the one person who gave us that very clear picture of what it would look like…was Kamala Harris,” Reid said. “She had a strategy, she had the courage to actually attack Joe Biden and she was one of the few who went after him head on. She destabilized him on the race question.” Reid was referencing the point in the debate in which Harris grappled with Biden and challenged his record with civil rights and race issues. The MSNBC host was also impressed that Harris was able to handle herself so well with her “bank shot” Continue reading "MSNBC’s Joy Reid Awed by Kamala Harris: She ‘Destabilized’ Biden"

MSNBC’s Joy Reid Rips Media For Burying Latest Trump Sexual Assault Allegation

MSNBC host Joy Reid claims the media at large “relatively buried” advice columnist E. Jean Carroll’s accusation that she was sexually assaulted by President Donald Trump in the 1990s. “In any other universe, in any other presidency, in any other news cycle, E. Jean Carroll’s bombshell revelations against the sitting president of the United States would have been the lead story all week long, as soon as they dropped,” Reid said Sunday on AM Joy. “Despite all of that, the story was relatively buried in this week’s news cycle. Even The New York Times tucked the story away in its ‘Books’ section despite running a headline that could not have been any more explicit: ‘E. Jean Carroll accuses Trump of sexual assault in her memoir,” Reid continued. In a cover story for New York magazine, Carroll accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in the 1990s in a department store dressing Continue reading "MSNBC’s Joy Reid Rips Media For Burying Latest Trump Sexual Assault Allegation"

Top Dem Clyburn on Biden Segregationist Senator Remarks: He Should Be ‘More Careful, But I Know Where His Heart Is’

Most of the 2020 Democrats are in South Carolina this weekend for the state party convention. One of the key figures in the state is House Majority Whip James Clyburn, whose annual fish fry last night was attended by 21 of the candidates running for president. Going into this weekend, the big controversy in the Democratic party was former VP Joe Biden talking about civility and working with segregationist senators decades ago. Some Democrats have defended him and others––especially fellow candidates like Cory Booker––have been more critical. This morning MSNBC’s Joy Reid spoke with Clyburn and asked him about Biden’s remarks and what “the purpose of a comment like that” was. Clyburn said he understands the issues Booker had with Biden’s comments, but he also understands the point Biden was making about working with people he disagree with––citing his own experience working across the aisle. Biden had initially Continue reading "Top Dem Clyburn on Biden Segregationist Senator Remarks: He Should Be ‘More Careful, But I Know Where His Heart Is’"

Biden: If We Can’t Work to Compromise with GOP, We Might as Well ‘Go Home’ or Start ‘Real Physical Revolution’

Vice President Joe Biden has talked on the campaign trail about working with Republicans, and during the Poor People’s Summit today, he defended his position as he acknowledged people consider it naive. MSNBC’s Joy Reid, one of the moderators, told Biden at one point the initiatives he’s proposing would wind up in the Senate, currently run by Republicans. She asked, “How would you get past either a majority-Republican Senate in which Mitch McConnell was determined to kill all of these ideas or even a Mitch McConnell in the minority who repeated the consistent filibustering you had when you were vice president?” “Joy, I know you’re one of the ones that thinks it’s naive to think we have to work together,” Biden responded. “The fact of the matter is if we can’t get a consensus, nothing happens except the abuse of power by the executive.” “You have to Continue reading "Biden: If We Can’t Work to Compromise with GOP, We Might as Well ‘Go Home’ or Start ‘Real Physical Revolution’"

Joy Reid to Cory Booker: Is Mitch McConnell ‘A Threat to Democracy?’

MSNBC’s Joy Reid spoke with 2020 Democratic candidate Cory Booker this morning and asked if Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is a threat to democracy for actions he’s taking. Reid asked Booker about turning out the Democratic base when President Donald Trump is “running very specifically to fire up his base on one thing, immigration.” And if the Democratic base is still frustrated that the party isn’t “fighting” more and everything they do in Congress will just be rejected by McConnell, she asked, “how do you get a movement-like election if the Democratic base is starting to get dispirited?” Booker talked about the importance of turnout “in African-American communities, in base communities,” and said that the election needs to be more than a “referendum” on Trump, but about “who we are going to be as a nation and who we’ll be to each other.” Reid went back Continue reading "Joy Reid to Cory Booker: Is Mitch McConnell ‘A Threat to Democracy?’"

Clyburn Defends Dem Leadership Approach on Impeachment: It ‘May Be the Answer,’ We’re Not There Yet

House Majority Whip James Clyburn this morning defended the approach from Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democratic leadership in the House, despite more Democrats and even one Republican congressman coming out in support of beginning impeachment proceedings. On MSNBC this morning, Joy Reid brought up the ongoing fight between the House and Trump administration, saying, “They’re just literally defying both you guys and the courts. So if impeachment is not the answer to that, and I think it’s clear you guys in leadership don’t think impeachment is the answer, what is the answer?” “Impeachment may be the answer,” Clyburn responded. “I don’t think that those of us in leadership are saying that impeachment is not the answer. I think from the report, from all that I’ve seen and heard for the last several years, I do believe that impeachment may be the answer. Those are the grounds.” He went Continue reading "Clyburn Defends Dem Leadership Approach on Impeachment: It ‘May Be the Answer,’ We’re Not There Yet"

Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank, who claims he lost his White House press pass as part of a “mass purge,” now says “everybody essentially in the White House press corps is on probation serving there at the pleasure of [press secretary] Sarah Sanders.” “They can take those press passes away from anybody anytime they want,” Milbank said on Joy Reid’s MSNBC show AM Joy on Saturday. “So anybody is essentially walking on eggshells now.” Milbank appeared with The Washington Post‘s Jonathan Capehart, who said he also lost his press pass but noted he has not been to the White House much and thought that was why he lost the pass originally. Capehart said when he got the email saying “therefore your pass is expired, I didn’t think anything of it. I thought, well, they got me. …  But it wasn’t until I read Dana’s column Continue reading "Washington Post’s Dana Milbank Claims WH Press Corps Forced to ‘Walk on Eggshells’ After Press Pass Purge"

Senior Sanders campaign adviser and former Ohio State Senator Nina Turner copped to the fact that Independent Vermont Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders blew it at last week’s She the People forum on women of color, saying she wished the senator had “articulated” better on issues affecting black women. On Sunday morning’s edition of MSNBC’s AM Joy, host Joy Reid led a panel featuring Turner, former Sanders campaign adviser Marcus Ferrell, and MSNBC contributor Jason Johnson in a discussion of the forum, at which Sanders was booed and jeered repeatedly. Turner blasted the forum’s audience in a speech last week, but seemed more open to the criticism Sunday. Reid described the scene at the forum, where Sanders whiffed on several questions asking for specifics, and asked Turner “Why is it that Senator Sanders, knowing he’s going to She the People which is a forum for women Continue reading "Sanders Adviser Nina Turner Admits Bernie Blew it at Black Women’s Forum: ‘I Don’t Know What Was Happening There’"

The story of remarks about 9/11 made by Rep. Ilhan Omar and the response from President Donald Trump have been a dominant topic in the last 24 hours, and it was the lead story on AM Joy on MSNBC Saturday morning. Host Joy Reid started her show open with a clip of Omar from that same event, in which she said that “no matter how much we have tried to be a the best neighbor, people have always worked on finding a way to not allow for every single civil liberty to be extended to us.” Reid then began her monologue. “For months now freshman Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has been the target of right wing vitriol over her criticism of U.S. policy toward Israel. But the attacks reached a new level of escalation this week, in reaction to distorted takes on Omar’s comments at a recent event Continue reading "Joy Reid Blasts ‘Right Wing Vitriol’ and ‘Distorted Takes’ On Ilhan Omar’s ‘Out of Context’ 9/11 Remark: ‘A Shocking New Low’"

Comic and political commentator Dean Obeidallah tore into Fox News over the network’s hosts doing premature victory laps about the as-yet-unreleased Mueller report, saying that “If Donald Trump was literally arrested, Fox News would declare victory.” On Sunday morning’s edition of MSNBC’s .AM Joy, host Joy Reid joined Obeidallah in mocking Fox News’ coverage of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report, none of which has been made public. Reid began by playing clips of people like Sean Hannity and Pete Hegseth “spiking the football” without having seen any of the report. “It’s remarkable what we’re seeing over there,” Obeidallah said, adding that “Lou Dobbs had Diamond and Silk on to go through the Mueller report, I’m not even kidding.” “Well, it’s not done unless Rayon and Cubic Zirconia weigh in,” Reid cracked. “Look, if Donald Trump was literally arrested, Fox News would’ve declared victory,” Obeidallah said. “It Continue reading "Dean Obeidallah Rips Fox on AM Joy: ‘If Donald Trump Was Literally Arrested, Fox News Would Declare Victory’"

The weaponizing of embarrassing old social media posts has found a new target: CNN White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins. On Sunday, the pro-LGBT, GOP group Log Cabin Republicans called out Collins for using a gay slur and disparaging lesbians in tweets dating back to 2011. Collins took to Twitter to issue an apology. “When I was in college, I used ignorant language in a few tweets to my friends,” Collins tweeted. “It was immature but it doesn’t represent the way I Continue reading "CNN’s Kaitlan Collins is the Latest Target of a Nasty and Dishonest Social Media Smear Campaign"

Joy Reid Sued For Defamation By Trump Supporter She Claimed Lobbed Racial Slur at Teen

A California woman has filed a defamation lawsuit against MSNBC host Joy Reid for spreading the false claim on social media that she lobbed a racial slur at a 14-year-old boy. Reid spread a viral photo on her social media pages in June that showed the woman, Roslyn La Liberte, wearing a MAGA hat and apparently screaming in the direction of a young boy at a city council meeting. In now-deleted posts, Reid wrote that La Liberte “showed up [to the meeting], in her MAGA hat, and screamed, ‘You are going to be the first deported’ … ‘ dirty Mexican!'” According to La Liberte, however, her conversation with 14-year-old Joseph Luevanos was “civil” and the two hugged afterwards. What’s more, at the time Luevanos told reporters, “she was still trying to keep it civil which I appreciate.” In La Liberte’s lawsuit against Reid, filed on Tuesday Continue reading "Joy Reid Sued For Defamation By Trump Supporter She Claimed Lobbed Racial Slur at Teen"

MSNBC’s Joy Reid this morning acknowledged she’s generally not in agreement with Sarah Huckabee Sanders, but said there actually is something concerning about the anonymous Trump administration official who wrote the New York Times op-ed this week. The author said they’re part of a “resistance” within the White House to rein in Trump’s worst impulses, though Reid said, “Of course, steering the administration in the right direction didn’t involve stopping the separation and caging of immigrant children or using the constitutional option of removing Trump by the 25th amendment. No, the right direction is apparently the one where the resistor gets to preserve the things they like. You know, tax cuts for the rich and deregulation of big business. The writer is basically every Republican in Washington.” Former DOJ spokesman Matthew Miller said that the solution to Trump’s actions in office is not trying to undermine him “through Continue reading "Joy Reid and Panel Rip Anonymous Op-Ed Author: Wants to ‘Be Fitted for Their Superman Cape’"

Omarosa Manigault Newman appeared on MSNBC again this morning, speaking with Joy Reid about her book and the latest Trumpworld developments of the week. Manigault Newman talked about Steve Bannon being a “proud white man” and expressed her alarm at the alt-right influences in the White House. One of the people in Trump’s orbit Reid asked about was David Pecker, the American Media CEO and National Enquirer publisher who was granted immunity this week. Manigault Newman talked about the Enquirer‘s disturbing report about her brother’s murder and how Trump talked to her about finding a “better resolution.” Reid asked her at one point if she was “surprised” that Michael Cohen turned on Trump. “I adore Michael Cohen,” Manigault Newman said. “And I am sad to see him going through what he’s going through. I adore his wife. His daughter was my intern at the White House. She’s Continue reading "Omarosa: Michael Cohen Did What He Was Asked to Do, Now Trump’s Kicking Him While He’s Down"

Checking in on That ‘Investigation’ Into Joy Reid’s Hacker

It’s been more than three months since Joy Reid responded to anti-gay posts unearthed from her old blog by claiming that she was the victim of a nefarious hacker. As more embarrassing posts were unearthed — the majority of the offensive content included various anti-gay and anti-Muslim commentary — reporters pressed the liberal MSNBC host, her network, and her alleged cybersecurity expert on the hacking excuse. Despite the ludicrous explanation — the few concrete instances she provided as evidence of hacking fell apart under scrutiny — Reid stood by her assertions and her lawyer (not NBC’s) told reporters the FBI had been tapped to investigate. Following the near-universal skepticism that met her claims, there was the strange apology episode of AM Joy, where Reid quasi-admitted to screwing up, saying she “truly believed” she had not written the posts, and had a panel of LGBT rights activists take turns forgiving Continue reading "Checking in on That ‘Investigation’ Into Joy Reid’s Hacker"

Art of the Deal Writer: Dems Should Be Asking People ‘Do You Want Putin to Be President’ or an American?

Tony Schwartz, the co-author of The Art of the Deal, had some advice for President Trump‘s opponents after this big Russia-centric week. Schwartz spoke this morning with MSNBC’s Joy Reid, who brought up how very similar Trump’s political rhetoric in the 80s compares to him today. Schwartz said current Trump is “diminished” and “unraveling,” saying the kind of pressure on Trump between the “investigations closing in on him” and the general stresses of the presidency don’t add up to anything good. “What happens to a person who’s psychologically unstable in that situation is that they begin to double down on all the things they’ve always done,” Schwartz said. “He’s living inside his reality.” He told Reid Trump’s “paranoia” has only heightened, said “Putin owns Trump,” and advised the media to just accept that the President lies, tell the audience that, and move on as opposed Continue reading "Art of the Deal Writer: Dems Should Be Asking People ‘Do You Want Putin to Be President’ or an American?"

Tara Dowdell, a former contestant on The Apprentice, laid into former WH Chief Strategist Steve Bannon on AM Joy Saturday. Host Joy Reid asked Dowdell if as a contestant on The Apprentice she felt then-show host Donald Trump was racist and played a clip of Bannon defending him. “This guy is not a racist. He’s one of the most loving guys I’ve ever met. He’s a tough guy but I’ve never seen him as a racist. One thing I would say about populism, this kind of populist, nationalist movement you see throughout Europe, it is not racist,” Bannon told Piers Morgan. “Well, asking a racist if someone else is racist, I’m not sure how there’s any credence that should be given to Steve Bannon of all people,” Dowdell said after the clip. “He … helped to develop and execute Trump’s racist strategy. It’s one thing to be racist. Continue reading "MSNBC Guest on Bannon’s Claim Trump Isn’t Racist: Shouldn’t Ask ‘A Racist if Someone Else is Racist’"
