A new book from Politico’s Tim Alberta has a number of juicy stories about President Donald Trump and his tenure in office, like how Trump’s current executive assistant burst into tears learning he won the 2016 election. The Washington Post reported a number of details from Alberta’s book American Carnage: On the Frontlines of the Republican Civil War and the Rise of President Trump. The report opens with the story of how Madeleine Westerhout broke down crying, “inconsolable” over Trump winning the election in 2016. The book also includes a number of interesting stories and on-the-record quotes about the Trump presidency and its allies, including former House Speaker Paul Ryan who the book claimed went into retirement because he couldn’t stand working with Trump anymore. “We’ve gotten so numbed by it all,” Ryan says. “Not in government, but where we live our lives, we have a responsibility to try and Continue reading "New Book Reveals Trump Secretary Sobbed After Learning of His 2016 Win and Other Crazy Details"

CNN media analyst Bill Carter appeared astounded by Sean Hannity’s recently revealed texts with former Donald Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort, saying the Fox host appeared like a “propaganda operative.” “Hannity has been known to be known as a partisan commentator, but here he’s like a propaganda operative because he’s connecting with someone very much in the mix of the story,” Carter told CNN’s Ana Cabrera Saturday evening. Recently unsealed court documents show that Hannity exchanged hundreds of messages with Manafort, often discussing his then-ongoing prosecution by the Department of Justice and Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Cabrera described the messages as “stunning.” “Any news organization would not want their journalists to be involved in this and he has distanced himself from being a journalist … this seems another step to me,” Carter said. “He’s actually involving himself in a story with a witness trying to get the Continue reading "CNN Media Analyst Astounded by Sean Hannity’s Texts with Paul Manafort: Like a ‘Propaganda Operative’"

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes tonight looked at some of the takeaways from Sean Hannity‘s texts with Paul Manafort, but he said at least they show Hannity is not “two-faced.” CH- I’ll say this for Hannity, “Sean Hannity is not two-faced, he is not duplicitous, and he is not putting on a show. The Sean Hannity of the texts is the Sean Hannity you get every night. He’s basically performing his deep state monologues to Paul Manafort via text.” Above the Law executive editor Elie Mystal said in a “reasonable world where journalism exists” Hannity would be fired. “This is just further proof that Sean Hannity is not a newsman, he is a spokesman,” he continued, telling Hayes if he was texting similar things to, say, Anthony Weiner, “I don’t think you would have your show.” Hayes brought up texts from Manafort saying he won’t give Continue reading "Chris Hayes: Hannity Was Basically ‘Performing His Deep State Monologues’ to Manafort"

Trump Impeachment Advocate Tom Steyer Slams Hannity-Manafort Texts: Sounds Like ‘Mobsters on a TV Show’

Billionaire activist and Trump impeachment advocate Tom Steyer blasted the newly revealed text messages between Fox News host Sean Hannity and former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, calling out their secret plotting and over-the-top rhetorical bravado as something from “mobsters on a TV show.” Steyer was reacting to newly unsealed court documents, which revealed that Hannity had been communicating for months with Manafort, a key subject in the Special Counsel investigation who was ultimately indicted and convicted on eight counts of bank and tax fraud. The transcripts of those text messages portray two men in close, intimate contact, constantly urging each other on in their defense of President Donald Trump and their antipathy for Special Counsel Robert Mueller. In response to Melber’s joking characterization of the “hot texts,” Steyer said they provide yet another example that Trump is unfit for the Office of the Presidency. “I think what Continue reading "Trump Impeachment Advocate Tom Steyer Slams Hannity-Manafort Texts: Sounds Like ‘Mobsters on a TV Show’"

Fox News’ Sean Hannity corresponded for months with Paul Manafort months in texts unsealed in court documents today. The texts show them going back and forth blasting the Russia investigation and investigators, them talking about Hannity’s show (with Manafort giving him praise for the good work he’s doing), and just odd ones like Hannity texting Paul Manafort “Are u up?” Hannity addressed the news on Twitter tonight, saying “My view of the Special Counsel investigation and the treatment of Paul Manafort were made clear every day to anyone who listens to my radio show or watches my TV show.” People familiar with Hannity’s commentary on the investigation may not be Continue reading "Hannity on Release of Texts With Manafort: My Views on Investigation ‘Were Made Clear Every Day’ Publicly"

Prosecutors today released a trove of text messages between former President Donald Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort and Fox News host Sean Hannity. The 56-page document released Friday shows a long-ranging correspondence between Hannity and Manafort. The messages often discuss Hannity’s programs, the Fox host’s support of Manafort and grievances about various Democratic political figures and Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team Hannity’s name is redacted from the first part of the document only identified by a blue avatar, but is later fully identified in the documents as a recipient of Manafort’s messages. Here are some of the highlights of the document. The full document is available on Google Drive. [Images via screengrabs]

Newly unsealed documents reveal months of text messages exchanged between Paul Manafort and Fox News’ Sean Hannity. Both of them railed against the investigation and people familiar with Hannity’s show will be unsurprised by a lot of what he had to say in the messages (with the exception of ones like “Hey u up?”). They also talked about Hannity’s show, with Manafort even complimenting him and saying things like, “Your monologue tonight was the best summary ever of the case against Mueller and his team.” One particular exchange matches up with commentary Hannity made on his show in August 2017. One text from Hannity asked Manafort “did u see last night” and said that he “trolled all” by saying “Paul Manafort made a mistake” because “He wasn’t HRC Holder Lynch And DWS.” The previous night Hannity defended Manafort on air and said the following:
“Didn’t he Continue reading "READ: Unsealed Docs Reveal Text Messages Between Paul Manafort and Sean Hannity"

One of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s top prosecutors has landed a book deal to write about the inquiry investigating potential Russian collusion with President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. The New York Times reported that Andrew Weissmann appears to be the first prosecutor on the special counsel’s team to make a deal with a publisher to write a book about the Muller investigation. CNN’s Brian Stelter was the first to report on the news of Weismann’s book deal. The book has been reportedly acquired by the publisher Random House, which did not respond to the Times‘ requests for comment. Weissmann was one of the key figures in the prosecution and eventual conviction of former Continue reading "Top Mueller Prosecutor Andrew Weissmann Nabs Book Deal on Special Counsel Investigation"

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) decried the practice of holding inmates in solitary confinement in response to reports that Paul Manafort, who is serving a federal prison sentence on a bevy of fraud and conspiracy charges, is being sent to Rikers Island. “Paul Manafort is being sent to solitary confinement in my district – Rikers Island,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Wednesday, in response to a New York Times report that the former Trump campaign chief was being sent to the notorious New York prison. “A prison sentence is not a license for gov torture and human rights violations. That‘s what solitary confinement is.” “Manafort should be released, along with all people being held in solitary,” she added, clarifying in a subsequent tweet that she believed Manafort should be released from solitary, not prison. Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged that the report said Manafort was going to be held in protective custody at Rikers, Continue reading "Ocasio-Cortez Decries Solitary Confinement After Report Manafort Headed to Rikers: He ‘Should Be Released’"

President Donald Trump is attacking New York Times and Washington Post again — this time because their coverage on a former Obama administration figure’s legal troubles isn’t exactly as he wants it to be: Let’s get some context. The Times and WaPo have covered the news that Gregory Craig, a lawyer who previously worked in President Barack Obama‘s administration, was indicted for lying to federal officials and attempting to conceal his work as a foreign lobbyist. The charge pertains to the legal services Craig performed on behalf of the Ukrainian government in Continue reading "Trump Slams ‘Corrupt’ NY Times, Wash. Fmr Russian Spy Reportedly Pressured Manafort Over His Debts to Oligarch

As the Mueller investigation continues, a new report reveals a connection between Paul Manafort and a former Russian spy concerning debts Manafort owed. Time Magazine dropped an in-depth report this morning on how Victor Boyarkin was in contact with Manafort during the 2016 campaign. Boyarkin told Time that he was trying to get Manafort to pay back his debts to Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska. One interesting facet of this story is that it was apparently not easy to track him down to speak with him:
Only in early October was a TIME reporter able to track Boyarkin down. In the company of a senior Russian diplomat and two young assistants from Moscow, he attended a conference in Greece that was organized by one of Putin’s oldest friends, the former KGB agent and state railway boss Vladimir Yakunin. “How did you find me here,” was the question Boyarkin asked, repeatedly, when Continue reading "Fmr Russian Spy Reportedly Pressured Manafort Over His Debts to Oligarch"

Louie Gohmert Rips Mueller For ‘Family Separation’ at Nielsen Hearing: ‘He Did it to Manafort’

Department of Homeland Security Secrtary Kirstjen Nielsen testified before the House Judiciary Committee in a hearing which, at times, got contentious. But one of the less heated moments of the session made news in its own right — because it produced a take which can be classified as nothing short of a head-scratcher. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) defended the DHS practice of migrant family separation at the border by invoking — of all people — former Donald Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and special counsel Robert Mueller. What do Manafort and Mueller have to do with family separation at the border? We’ll let Gohmert tell you. “Parents are separated from children every single day of every year, year after year, when there’s probable cause to believe a parent has committed a crime,” Gohmert said. He added, “Mueller did it — and I know he’s a hero to some folks Continue reading "Louie Gohmert Rips Mueller For ‘Family Separation’ at Nielsen Hearing: ‘He Did it to Manafort’"

Former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort showed up for court on Friday in Alexandria prison wear and confined to a wheelchair. On Thursday it was announced a judge ruled Manafort —  who was convicted of 8 counts of bank and tax fraud in August — would not be permitted to wear one of his signature, custom suits for the hearing. Manafort’s appearance in a wheelchair, however, came as a surprise. Kara Scannell, from a live shot outside the Virginia courtroom, reported the news for CNN. “It was a surprise that silenced the courtroom when Manafort entered in a wheelchair wearing a green jumpsuit,” she said. “[He] has some sort of inflammation in his right foot. It was bandaged in a sock, slightly elevated when he was in the wheelchair.” Scannell also noted his condition had something to do with his diet. The reporter added: “It’s one issue that his Continue reading "Paul Manafort Shows Up for Court in Prison Jumpsuit and Confined to a Wheelchair"

Former Trump lawyer John Dowd was trying to help pay the legal fees of Paul Manafort and Rick Gates earlier this year. The Wall Street Journal reports today that not only was Dowd––who left POTUS’ legal team in March––putting up his own money and trying to get people to donate, he was also attempting to “divert money from the White House legal defense fund”:
John Dowd, who at the time was heading Mr. Trump’s legal team, at the start of the year told associates of the president he wanted to direct money from the legal defense fund set up for White House officials and campaign aides to the lawyers for Messrs. Manafort and Gates, according to people familiar with the matter… On Feb. 22, Mr. Dowd told associates of the president in an email that Messrs. Manafort and Gates needed funds immediately, according to people familiar with the Continue reading "Ex-Trump Lawyer Reportedly Wanted to Help Pay Manafort, Gates Legal Fees With Money from WH Legal Defense Fund"

Former FBI Director James Comey thinks Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s probe may be headed for the finish line. In an interview with St. Louis Public Radio (via the Daily Caller), Comey said that Paul Manafort flipping could signal that Mueller is wrapping up his work. “[There’s] an argument to be made that the conviction – the plea and cooperation by Paul Manafort – may represent that we’re in the fourth quarter,” Comey said. Mueller, Comey notes, is getting ever closer to President Donald Trump. And that, according to the former FBI Director, could be a sign the probe is drawing to a close. “The way you normally do investigations is you work from the bottom up, and so they’re getting pretty high,” he said. Comey did add, “I’m hesitant to even say that is Bob Mueller’s conducted his investigation like a pro – you know nothing about it Continue reading "Comey Hints Mueller Probe is Wrapping Up: He May Be ‘In the Fourth Quarter’"

Trump Downplays Manafort’s Campaign Role, Not Worried ‘As Long as He Tells The Truth’

President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House Wednesday that he isn’t worried about Paul Manafort’s cooperation with Special Counsel Robert Mueller. The former Trump campaign chair reached a plea deal with Mueller last week, who is investigating the 2016 campaign’s ties to Russia, and agreed to cooperate so as to avoid a second trial. Per the New York Times:
It is not clear what information Mr. Manafort offered prosecutors in three days of negotiations that led to the plea deal. But in court on Friday, Mr. Manafort agreed to an open-ended arrangement that requires him to answer “fully, truthfully, completely and forthrightly” questions about “any and all matters” the government wants to ask about.
Trump expressed his faith in Manafort when asked about the plea deal by reporters on Wednesday. “If he is honest, and I think he is… as long as he tells the truth it’s Continue reading "Trump Downplays Manafort’s Campaign Role, Not Worried ‘As Long as He Tells The Truth’"

President Donald Trump has not directly commented on Paul Manafort‘s deal on Twitter yet, but his lawyer Rudy Giuliani has been tweeting a lot about it this weekend. President Donald Trump went after Robert Mueller and the special counsel investigation this morning two days after the Paul Manafort deal was announced. Ken Starr, the former independent counsel who investigated former President Bill Clinton, said this morning that Paul Manafort did the right thing by making the deal with Robert Mueller. On ABC’s This Week, Jon Karl asked Starr if he was surprised to see Manafort “agree to this full cooperation.” “No, he was under tremendous pressure,” Starr said. “Given the seriousness of the charges… he did the right thing. He did the smart thing.” When Karl asked about what Manafort must have to get this deal, Starr said we don’t know for sure, but that it’s “very likely that Paul Manafort has indicated through his counsel and directly that he can provide very helpful information, useful information, to get to the bottom of what Bob Mueller and his team have been charged to do. So it is a very significant breakthrough.” You can watch the Continue reading "Ken Starr: ‘Given the Seriousness of the Charges,’ Manafort ‘Did the Right Thing’"
