On Thursday, Fox News’ Tucker Carlson weighed in the protests that happened outside of his home Wednesday night. Calling into his own show while on vacation, he said the protests were upsetting. He also noted that the whole demonstration was “totalitarian in its intent.” “What’s it like to find out that your wife is hiding in the pantry because people are threatening her? I mean, it’s upsetting,” Carlson said. He added: “This has a chilling effect on people’s ability to speak and to think freely. That’s the point, it’s totalitarian in its intent and we should fight it… Our public conversation has been hijacked by extremists like Continue reading "Tucker Carlson Weighs in on Protesters Outside His House: ‘It’s Totalitarian in Its Intent’"

In covering clashes in Portland, Oregon on Saturday, the word “mob” would not be a controversial description to apply to the groups battling each other and police, as kicking, punching, stomping, pepper spray, batons, fire and more were deployed and used in a series of out-of-control confrontations that were caught on camera by social media users. Local newspaper The Oregonian covered the story on Saturday after the clashes took place, and reported that the two groups “used bear spray, bare fists and batons to thrash each other” in the confrontation that took place mostly outside of popular local bar Kelly’s Olympian. The Oregonian report includes the above video and notes the story comes just a day after video surfaced of a similar confrontation in New York City, in which so-called Proud Boys allegedly beat a protester. The Portland battles were also caught for Twitter, first and obviously (but not Continue reading "Violent, Bloody Brawl Between Antifa and Patriot Prayer at So-Called ‘Law and Order’ March in Portland Caught On Video"

Actress and supermodel Emily Ratajkowski said she was arrested while protesting the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, as she and hundreds of other activists took to the streets of Washington, D.C. today to voice their opposition against the Supreme Court justice nominee who has been accused of sexual assault. “Today I was arrested protesting the Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, a man who has been accused by multiple women of sexual assault,” Ratajkowski wrote on an Instagram post of her protesting on Capitol Hill. “Men who hurt women can no longer be placed in positions of power. Kavanaugh’s confirmation as a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States is a message to women in this country that they do not matter. I demand a government that acknowledges, respects and supports women as much as it does men.”

As the clock ticks closer to the vote on Judge Brett Kavanaugh‘s confirmation, droves of protesters are flooding Washington in a last ditch effort to quash his Supreme Court appointment. Reporters on the ground for Thursday’s demonstrations remarked on the massive number of Kavanaugh’s opponents marching to the Hart Senate Office Building and the Supreme Court itself. Joining the fight was actress and comedian Amy Schumer, who was arrested in the process, CNN reported. Her relative, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has been vocal in his disapproval of the judge who’s been the subject of scrutiny following accusations of sexual assault and heavy drinking. Schumer was just one of a handful of arrests which could be seen that afternoon as Capitol Police rounded up demonstrators who are enraged as senators prepare to vote now that the FBI investigation into Kavanaugh has ended. Anti-Trump groups and progressive organizations hosted demonstrations in Los Angeles and San Diego as Trump embarked on his first trip to California since assuming the White House last year. Protests also erupted on the other side of the border, with demonstrators marching throughout Mexico’s Tijuana and nearby border towns.

A year into the Trump Administration, thousands continue to take to the streets but has the press lost interest? This week we look at the nature of protest in an era of never-ending distraction. We also take a deep dive into the world of right-wing conspiracies, as well as meme culture as a whole. Plus, we remember Ursula Le Guin, the monumental science fiction author who passed away earlier this week.

Vice President Mike Pence‘s speech before Israel’s parliament was disrupted on Monday by a number of the chamber’s Israeli-Arab members. According to NBC’s Andrea Mitchell, 13 members of parliament held up signs saying “Jerusalem is the Capital of Palestine.” The members were escorted from the chamber by ushers — per the Jerusalem Post’s Lahav Harkov. In the speech, Pence announced that the U.S. plans to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem by the end of 2019. “Our president made his decision in the best interest of the United States,” Pence said. “We believe his decision is in the best interest of peace.” He also stood behind President Donald Trump’s decision Continue reading "WATCH: Protestors Escorted Out After Wild Disruption of Mike Pence’s Israeli Parliament Address"

After watching enough coverage this week from the G20 summit, Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld said tonight the media needs to stop referring to people who set fires and throw rocks at the police as “protesters.” For example (per CNN):
Protesters at the G20 summit in Germany set a series of bonfires in the streets, looted shops, and stacked up blocks of pavement to use as projectiles as tension between demonstrators and police ratcheted up Friday night.
Gutfeld mockingly tweeted about this kind of coverage before the show tonight:

German police are all over Hamburg today as the city faces massive protests against the G20 Summit. SWAT teams and riot police have engaged protesters, and reports indicate that authorities have used tear gas and water cannons to break up several violent demonstrations around the city. Some of the protests are being held against President Trump, though other groups have been spotted protesting capitalism, globalization, and the G20 Summit as a whole. Anarchist groups and violent activists are also believed to be participating in today’s events. Thousands of people are expected to take part in the “G-20: Welcome to Hell” protest that will run through the duration of the summit. Police encountered a group of demonstrators earlier today at Hamburg’s weekly fish market, and several people were placed under arrest for throwing debris at law enforcement and attacking a police car. That Kendall Jenner Pepsi Commercial Left Everyone in The View’s Studio Speechless

You know that Pepsi ad with Kendall Jenner at a protest of some sort? And how it caused an influx of social media reactions? It had the opposite effect on The View today, where panelists and audience members alike were stunned into momentary silence by it. After Whoopi Goldberg observed that the ad “left everybody speechless,” Joy Behar asked what the point of the whole thing even was. Jedediah Bila said that what she disliked most was the way the commercial made protests — which involve people who are “deeply committed to values” — look like “a block party.” “It’s also sort of appropriating the Black Lives Matter movement,” observed Sunny Hostin. “They’re using social Continue reading "That Kendall Jenner Pepsi Commercial Left Everyone in The View’s Studio Speechless"

shutterstock_408810109 (1) On Saturday night, an event called the “Queer Dance Party For Climate Justice at Ivanka Trump‘s House” was held outside the home she shares with husband Jared Kushner. The description for the event said:
The entire Trump Administration has shown a blatant disregard for our planet and it’s inhabitants, like paving the way for the Dakota Access Pipeline displacing the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. The reality is that the people most affected by the administration’s bad climate decisions are our most vulnerable friends: our poor, working class, native, trans & POC siblings. We must put our bodies on the line for our earth and for all who depend on its resources.
According to the event’s description, 311 people attended. One of those people was Ivanka Trump’s neighbor, who stood on her porch in a fur coat and sipped wine, watching the protestors. She was photographed by The Daily Mail

How Does Russian Propaganda Cover the Russia Protests? … It’s Awkward

Screen Shot 2017-03-28 at 1.16.09 PM It’s not easy being a state-sponsored propaganda news organization when your country is embroiled in domestic unrest. Case in point RT. Once more commonly known by its full name — Russia Today — the Kremlin-financed media organization walked a delicate line covering scenes of protest and disorder that broke in Moscow on Sunday. On the English language edition of its website, Monday, the network appeared to give full billing to the protests, with an article titled, Hundreds Detained at Unsanctioned Opposition Rally in Central Moscow. The headlines even promised “photos” and “video.” Notwithstanding a bizarre focus on the official legality of the demonstration, their written piece seemed to have most of the basics. RT listed allegations of official corruption as the cause of the protest, and was not shy about reporting on the hundreds who had been arrested, including teenagers.
Moscow police have officially confirmed the detentions of 500 Continue reading "How Does Russian Propaganda Cover the Russia Protests? … It’s Awkward"

Trump Administration ‘Strongly Condemns’ Arrests of Peaceful Protesters in Russia

Screen Shot 2017-03-27 at 1.18.46 PM The Trump administration has officially condemned the mass arrests of peaceful protesters in Russia. Since Sunday, hundreds have been detained as anti-Putin demonstrations engulfed the country. In a statement to Buzzfeed, Acting State Department Spokesman Mark Toner gave the official stance of the United States.
The United States strongly condemns the detention of hundreds of peaceful protesters throughout Russia on Sunday. Detaining peaceful protesters, human rights observers, and journalists is an affront to core democratic values. We were troubled to hear of the arrest of opposition figure Alexei Navalny upon arrival at the demonstration, as well as the police raids on the anti-corruption organization he heads. The United States will monitor this situation, and we call on the government of Russia to immediately release all peaceful protesters. The Russian people, like people everywhere, deserve a government that supports an open marketplace of ideas, transparent and accountable governance, equal treatment under Continue reading "Trump Administration ‘Strongly Condemns’ Arrests of Peaceful Protesters in Russia"

Lest you think it’s only Republicans feeling the heat over town halls, Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein was confronted outside a the site of a fundraiser today about why she hasn’t been holding town halls with constituents. L.A. Times reporter Javier Panzar captured video on the scene. People asked her questions about resisting the Trump agenda and his nominees, with people encouraging her to specifically “take a stand” on Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch. Feinstein said today she’ll commit to doing a town hall, though she did not give a date and this isn’t the first time this year protesters Continue reading "Sen. Town Hall Crowd Cheers When Woman Tells Tom Cotton ‘I Am Not a Paid Protester’

Senator Tom Cotton tonight held a town hall that became rather rowdy, just one of many such Republican town halls in the past few weeks. He received questions on everything from Obamacare (one constituent asked those in the room affected by the law to stand) to President Trump‘s tax returns to Russia. At one point a woman stood up, introduced herself, and said, “I am not a paid protester.” A lot of people at the town hall applauded wildly. Cotton said this in response:
“I don’t really care if anybody is paid or not, you’re all Arkansans and I’m glad to hear from you. So I know… there’s been some talk about that in the media, some politicians have said that. I just want Continue reading "Town Hall Crowd Cheers When Woman Tells Tom Cotton ‘I Am Not a Paid Protester’"

‘You’re Not Helping!’: Whoopi Goldberg Rips Protesters Rioting Against Milo Yiannopoulos

On Thursday’s episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg emphatically said it was wrong that protests this week at University of California-Berkeley descended into chaos and violence. “You know, I can’t say this strongly enough,” Goldberg said. “You can protest any speaker you want to. But the minute you get violent…you say you’re protesting because you want to protect people and stuff and then you go and burn people’s stuff? What the hell man?” Goldberg was referring to a speech involving Milo Yiannopoulos, the provocative Breitbart editor who had to cancel his appearance at the school when the protests against him devolved into riots. Goldberg argued that protesting does not give anyone the right to damage property, and Continue reading "‘You’re Not Helping!’: Whoopi Goldberg Rips Protesters Rioting Against Milo Yiannopoulos"
