Texas Republican Congressman Randy Weber demanded that CNN fire reporter Jim Acosta for shouting a question at Donald Trump during his Wednesday press conference. Acosta drew the ire of Trump supporters when he and and Trump got in an argument during the press conference, after Trump denounced CNN and then refused to take Acosta’s questions. After the exchange, Acosta was pulled aside by Trump press secretary Sean Spicer and told he’d be kicked out of the press conference if he ever tried it again. Weber has a history of penning controversial tweets. “Even Adolph Hitler thought it more important than Obama to get to Paris,” he tweeted in 2015 when the president couldn’t make a peace rally following the Paris terror attacks. Trevor Noah Warns About ‘Frightening Moment’ from Trump Press Conference

Trevor Noah tonight mocked President-elect Donald Trump over his big press conference today, but he got more serious in recounting Trump’s clash with CNN’s Jim Acosta. Trump got in a heated back-and-forth with Acosta when the latter persistently tried to ask a question, and the president-elect called CNN “fake news” before moving on. Noah called that “one of the most frightening moments” of his presser because “this is essentially the first step in the authoritarian tangle.” And he warned about the slippery slope of Trump coming down hard on any news outlet that reports critically on him. clapperDirector of National Intelligence James Clapper issued a rare statement tonight after meeting with President-elect Donald Trump to discuss recent information leaked to the press. Last night there were two big reports on intel alleging that Russia has lots of supposedly compromising but unverified information about Trump. There’s been a lot of skepticism about these reports in the past 24 hours, and Trump himself tweeted this morning criticizing intel leaks: Well, Trump ended up meeting with Clapper. In a statement tonight, Clapper confirmed that he Continue reading "Intel Chief Releases Statement After Speaking to Trump: I Expressed ‘Profound Dismay’ at Leaks"

‘Isn’t It Irresponsible?’: Tucker Carlson, Fortune Writer Clash Over BuzzFeed Dossier Report

Tucker Carlson tonight faced off with Fortune senior writer Mathew Ingram after Ingram argued that BuzzFeed was right to publish that dossier with unverified allegations against President-elect Donald Trump. Ingram made this argument in a piece for Fortune:
The allegations have potentially significant implications, including the suggestion that the Russian government is not only trying to pressure Donald Trump but has succeeded in cutting deals with him. Even if they are currently unverified, that makes publishing the full documents justifiable on journalistic grounds. Doing so may even make it easier to verify the claims made in them, since it is likely to flush sources of all kinds out of the woodwork. But even if it didn’t, there is a solid argument to be made that BuzzFeed did the right thing in publishing them. The case against publishing amounts to arguing that journalists are Continue reading "‘Isn’t It Irresponsible?’: Tucker Carlson, Fortune Writer Clash Over BuzzFeed Dossier Report"

O’Reilly: Not Since Nixon Has the Press Been ‘So Determined to Bring Someone Down’

Bill O’Reilly tonight said we should all expect that “the press and Donald Trump will be an ongoing soap opera.” He recapped today’s press conference, in which Trump clashed with CNN’s Jim Acosta and called his network “fake news,” and O’Reilly observed that the president-elect’s demeanor was just as “direct” as ever. The press, he thinks, is still “fixated on the election” and looking for any way to take him down:
“There’s no question in my mind that the hunt… for a Trump-Russia connection during the campaign remains very intense and active, some in the national media wanting to de-legitimize the vote. And at this point, that’s the only way to do it, linking the Trump campaign to Putin… Donald Trump helped himself today, but he’d better watch his back. Not since Richard Nixon has the national press corps been so Continue reading "O’Reilly: Not Since Nixon Has the Press Been ‘So Determined to Bring Someone Down’"

Sean Spicer: CNN’s Jim Acosta at Trump Presser Was ‘Disrespectful’ and Should Apologize

PicMonkey CollageCNN’s Jim Acosta attempted to ask President-elect Donald Trump a question at his presser today, invoking Trump’s criticisms of his network, and the two ended up getting into a fierce back-and-forth that culminated in Trump calling CNN “fake news.” Afterwards, Acosta said that incoming White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer “did say to me that if I were to do that again, I was going to be thrown out of this press conference.” Spicer criticized Acosta during an appearance on Fox Business Network tonight, and followed that up with this tweet saying Acosta should apologize: Acosta pushed back on Twitter, and his colleague Jake Tapper chimed in too:

‘You Guys Are Feeling the Heat!’: Anderson Cooper, Kellyanne Conway Battle Over CNN Intel Report

Kellyanne Conway and Anderson Cooper got into a massive heated back-and-forth tonight over CNN’s report last night on Trump being briefed about supposed “compromising” information against him. Cooper expressed his frustration that Sean Spicer appeared to be conflating CNN’s report with BuzzFeed’s, which included a dossier on that alleged Russian disinformation, and he confronted Conway about that. Conway repeatedly insisted to Cooper that CNN’s “screaming headline” was wrong and that they linked to the BuzzFeed report online. While the interview was going on, Jim Sciutto tweeted this:

For weeks now, journalists have been aware of a dossier circulating among top officials and the media; it alleges among other things, that Russia has compromising (Kompromat) information on President Elect Donald Trump. But it wasn't until a chain of events set off by a presidential briefing about the contents of the dossier that the media felt free to talk about what they knew. Brooke speaks with Slate's Will Oremus about Buzzfeed's (and Slate's) decision to publish the anonymous (and unverified) Russia memos in full.

‘I’m Prepared to Do What’s Right’: Rubio Won’t Commit to Voting For Tillerson

On Wednesday morning, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) pursued an aggressive line of questioning during Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson‘s confirmation hearing — specifically as it pertained to Russia, with Rubio pressing Tillerson on whether or not he thinks Russian President Vladimir Putin is a war criminal. Meeting with reporters on Wednesday afternoon, Rubio refused to commit to voting for President-elect Donald Trump‘s nominee. “This is a very important decision,” And I recognize the hardened split on the committee, and what it would all mean. So I have to make sure I’m 100% behind whatever decision that I make. Because once I make it, it isn’t gonna change.” Rubio was referring to the fact that the 21-person Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which is holding Tillerson’s confirmation hearing, has 11 republicans and 10 democrats. So if all 10 democrats vote against Tillerson, it would Continue reading "‘I’m Prepared to Do What’s Right’: Rubio Won’t Commit to Voting For Tillerson"

Shortly after President-elect Donald Trump called Buzzfeed a “failing pile of garbage” at today’s press conference over their publication of a dossier that contained unverified (and likely unverifiable) claims that Russia attempted to compromise him, the site decided to offer shirts with the phrase on it for sale. screen-shot-2017-01-11-at-3-51-51-pm Right away, members of the media criticized the publication’s decision to immediately try to monetize Trump’s condemnation of them, especially considering the journalistic ethics they seemed to violate in publishing the disputed document.

shutterstock_517747024President-Elect Donald Trump‘s inauguration is not going to be A-List-less after all. According to Us WeeklyCaitlyn Jenner has accepted an invitation to attend the event, which will take place on January 20th. Jenner is a republican, and over the summer she spoke at an LGBT event at the Republican National Convention, saying “I think our best move to get back to a constitutional government is in the Republican party. I won’t give up hope on it.” Trump has reportedly had trouble getting celebrities to perform at and attend the inauguration. Back in December, he seemingly refuted those claims when he tweeted that lots of A-Listers wanted to attend, but he wanted “the people.” Though most of the Kardashian/Jenner crew supported Hillary Clinton, it’s not entirely surprising Jenner would go- she and Trump seemingly have a good relationship, and while Vice President-Elect Mike Pence has been criticized for Continue reading "Caitlyn Jenner Will Reportedly Be at Donald Trump’s Inauguration"

marie osmondPresident-Elect Donald Trump claims he doesn’t want celebrities at his Inauguration. If he is looking for extra performers, though, he might want to ask Marie Osmond. In a recent interview with Yahoo News, she says that though she hasn’t been asked, she would step up to the plate if she were, saying, “I think when it comes to our country we need to unite, and to not support our President… I think is wrong.” She continued, saying “I think we should all support our president whether we’re happy or sad… We should come together and I think an inauguration should be a time to unite. It really should.” As far as these things go, Osmond would be a good choice. She has experience with the gig, having played with her brother Donny at Ronald Reagan‘s inauguration in 1981. Following the much-criticized publication by Buzzfeed of a dossier showing unverified claims about President-elect Donald Trump being compromised by Russia, MSNBC host Chuck Todd grilled the site’s Editor-in-Chief over his decision to publish the document. After Ben Smith justified the publication by noting that high level government officials had seen it, saying that he felt it needed to be shared with readers, Todd hit back. “You talk about context and you talk about putting responsibility on the readers,” the MTP Daily host stated. “But at the same time, don’t you have responsibility of not spreading false information? Are you knowingly spreading false information?” Smith followed that up by invoking fake news, which led Todd to fire back. “I know this was not your intent,” the MSNBC personality said. “I’ve known you a long time, but you just published fake news.” Smith responded that Continue reading "‘You Just Published Fake News’: Chuck Todd Hammers Buzzfeed Editor-in-Chief Over Trump/Russia Dossier"

imageedit_3_3766318477Book lovers the world over have loved Margaret Atwood‘s dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale since its release in 1985. The book, which follows a female character who lives in a totalitarian theocracy where women are stripped of their rights and agency, is being made into a series for Hulu starring Elisabeth Moss and Samira Wiley. The two of them gave quotes to Cosmopolitan after the release of the first trailer for the series. Moss explained,”There are obvious similarities to what’s happening now, but it goes back much further than that. Margaret [Atwood] told me she wrote the book as a response to things that were happening in the world. They might not have been happening exactly like that in the United States, but they were happening.” Wiley, too, observed that there are parallels to current events to be found in the series. “When we first started filming, we just Continue reading "Stars of Dystopian Thriller Handmaid’s Tale Talk Trumpian Parallels: ‘Now We’re Really There’"

Cory Booker Testifies Against Senate Colleague Jeff Sessions, Calls It a Matter of Conscience

Senator Cory Booker today got a lot of attention for testifying against Senate colleague and Trump AG nominee Jeff Sessions in what he called a matter of conscience but what more cynical observers felt was his kickoff to a 2020 presidential run. Booker acknowledged at the outset today just how extraordinary his testimony is (more on that here), but said, “In the choice between standing with Senate norms or standing up for what my conscience tells me is best for our country, I will always choose conscience and country.” Leading up to his testimony today, there were reports highlighting Booker’s praise of Sessions last year when the two senators came together to award the congressional gold medal to Selma marchers. He said at the time he felt “blessed and honored” working with Sessions on it. Booker acknowledged this in his remarks today, Continue reading "Cory Booker Testifies Against Senate Colleague Jeff Sessions, Calls It a Matter of Conscience"

Trump Somehow Wins Yet Another Round Against the Dysfunctional News Media

screen-shot-2017-01-11-at-3-32-36-pmThe last twenty hours or so have been among the most bizarre and confusing of this already unprecedentedly strange post-Trump era. However, the bottom line is that, Donald Trump, the master media manipulator, has won yet another round against a pathetically impotent news media, even though the facts might have effectively brought down a different president in a simpler era. Before I explain how and why I think Trump is, at least for now, the victor in this latest battle, let me provide some observations on the many remarkable developments of the last day. – The CNN report, though it has seemingly been contradicted by an ensuing NBC story, that Trump and President Obama were briefed on intelligence information indicating that Russia may have obtained compromising information on the President-elect, appears to be solid and makes total sense in the larger scheme of what we know about how the campaign Continue reading "Trump Somehow Wins Yet Another Round Against the Dysfunctional News Media"
